OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER.
OtJB correspondent at Salem last
week referred to one matter which we
heartily endorse. He stated tht Rep
resentative Hall was devoting much ot
his time In careful preparation of lnm
self to intelligently vote upon matters
to be called up for adoption or burial.
Representative Hall has not yet intro
duced a bill in the bouse, and this cer
tainly is to his credit. There are cer
tainly some of the moat useless, un
meaning, and, we may add, dangerous
bills being introduced this session of
any for years, and if our statute books
are burdened with one out of twenty
five of them we will have so much law
that we will not know what to do with
it. We believe that representative
can best serve his constituents by be
ing able to intelligently vote upon
measures, and in this course we heart
ily endorse the action of the represen
tative from Columbia. Nine-tenths of
the bills introduced are so done merely
for effect for reputation and it re
quires a few level heada to set back
. and defeat them.
Probably nothing in this ataie has
ever been uttered on the road question
equal in importance as that in Gover
nor Gear's message.because it expresses
in terse terms the pith of such an im
portant subject for business men and
farmers alike to consider. "Good
roads." save the Governor," are not
only the arteries to commerce, but they
affect the very vitality of the business
interests of the country district." The
entire remarks by Governor Geer on
the road question are given aa sound
subject matter for our people in Co
lumbia county to study. Here we
have all the commodities necessary to
build good roads, and we pay enough
for road supervisors' salaries and in
spectors' perquisite to make adequate
com pensation for services of one skilled
road superintendent, whose duties
would not be divided between private
affairs and that of building and im
proving roads.
Thosk who argue that expansion is
unconstitutional are mot only wasting
their efforts, but are hurling the side
of the case which they champion
There is inherent in sovereignty the
right to extend borders and take up
new territory. The United States ha
not hesitated on previous occasions to
annex territory, and it is idle to con
tend now that it has Dot the right to
do so. Welcome.
Bsfokmcbs have done their work
well in Columbia county. Import a
little more such stock and all the dear
taxpavers, in which these great "re
formers" manifest such interest, will
have left as evidence of their one-time
presence, will be the bare land. Ex
perience prompts ns to state that they
take everything that is loose.
! Grippe Successfully Treated.
"I have Just recovered from the second
attack of la grippe this year," say Mr. Jas.
A. Jones, publisher of the Leader. Mena,
Tex, "In the latter cane 1 used Cham
berlain's Cough Remedy, and I think with
considerable success, only being in bed a
tittle over two days against tea day for the
former attack. The second attack I am
satisfied would have been equally as bad as
the tirst but for the use of this remedy, a 1
had to go to bed in about six hoars after be
ing 'struck' with it, while in the first case I
was able to attend to business about two
days before getting 'down.' " For sale by
Dr. Edwin Boss, drugKist.

You are perhaps aware that pneumonia
always results from a cold or from an at
tack of la grippe. During the epidemic of
la grippe a few years ago when so many
cases resulted in pneumonia, it was observed
that the attack was never followed by that
disease when Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
was used. It counteract any tendency of a
cold or la grippe to result in that dangerous
disease. It is the best remedy In the world
