The annual estimate of the wool clip
of the United States for 1898 made by
Secretary North of the National Asso
ciation of Wool Manufacturers, and
which ts to be published in its No
vember bulletin, shows tbe amount to
have been 266,720,684 pounds, against
150,168,251 pounds in 1897.
Oregon shows, according to the sta
tistics, ;the largest yield, 31,391,387
pounds of washed and nnwaehed wool,
nd, next to Washington, shows the
largest per cent in shrinkage in scour
ing, or 71 per cent
Montana follows, with 20,935,105
pounds and 63 percent shrinkage; Cal
ifornia, ie,uo2,vyB pounds and 69 per
oent shrinkage; Texas, 16,380,443
pounds and 70 per cent; Wyoming,
18,636,704 pounds; New Mexico, 12,
888,430; Ohio, 12,114,953 pounds;
Colorado, 9,968,869; and Michigan,
8,856,123 pounds. The amount of
pulled wool it estimated at 22,116,871
pounds, making a total of 266,730,684
pounds Washed or unwashed, or 111, -681,61
pounds of scoured wool. The
agffregrate clip of the six New England
States it about 1,745,025 pounds of
scoured wool of which Massachusetts
furnishes 128,860 pounds.

Direct communication between South
American markets and San Francisco

largest French steamship companies.
Tbe Cbargeurt Beunls will start a
monthly service next March between
San Francisco and Liverpool, which
will make stoppages at Mazatlan. Acs-
pulco, Guayaquil, Callao, Pern; Val
paraiso, Chile, Montevledo, Uruguay;
Santos, Brasil; Liverpool, Havre and
possibly a Belgian port. The company
has been organized and operated since
1872, and is now having constructed
three 6,000-tont additional steamers
for the aPcifio trade.

cannery was started at Anacortes,
Wash., and the product Is now finding

The grocers in Seattle and Taooma
are making a run on flour, taking ad
vantage of the rivalry between Tacoma
and 8eattle mill men. The conditions
are peculiar. The Washington wheat
grower wants 60-cont wheat, while the
miller is only getting $3.40 for his
ground product. To grind wheat that
costs 60 cents, add the fieight, and
then sell it at $3.40 means something
of a loss.

Idaho Falls, Idaho, has returned to

The yield of potatoes in the Spokane

is expected to to reach $1.60 by next

It is stated that a large manufactur
ing establishment for making wearing
apparel will be added to The Dalles,
Or., Woolen Mill Company's plant. A
new iron and brick picking-room it be
ing built, and a scheme for electrlo
lighting is being planned.
