SIXTEEN TO OUR IN EGYPT.
Thb semi-annual statement of the
financial condition of Columbia county,
which appeared in this pa per last week,
presents a very satisfactory condition
of affairs to the taxpayers. Taken in
connection with the proceeding state
ment issued ou April 1st, the October
statement shows a reduotion in tbe
county's indebtedness of $31,186.74.
On October 1st, 1S97, the indebtedness
of the oounty was 944,597.27, and on
April let, 1S93, the liabilities were 60
463.79. At the present time the county
Is responsible for the payment of but
$31,186.74 of outstanding warrants,
including the interest accrued thereon,
estimated to be $3,000. While the
statement shows the iudebtedness of
the county at present to be less than it
was on the first of April by $29,277.05,
yet we believe the proper way to cal
culate the reduction is tbe difference
between the liabilities of October 1897
end the liabilities of October 1898,
which shows adifference of $13,610.53.
This is a splendid showing for one
year, mid future promises greater and
piore rapid reduction.
