Fusion in name and in fact are two
different thing. While it has been
comparatively easy to divide the offices
moos the various political bodies rep
resenting fusion, it will be far more dil-
ficult to hold the different element
together on election day. The repub
lican need not fear the fusion ticket,
if only the diiaention in our oreani
cation can be made to cease. Now ii
the time for republican leader to din
play some unselfishness and give and
take enough to effect a compromise
whereby the full party strength can
be asflured for tbe nominee.
Thi date for the county republican
convention if drawing near, and, aside
from what appeared in this paper lt
week, there ha been very little said in
regard to candidate for the vaiious
county offices to be filled at the June
election. We are of the opinion that
a better and more satisfactory ticket
can be nominated when there haa been
a full and free discussion of the merits
of proposed candidate for reasonable
time prior to the convention, and with
tbi belief honestly in view is our rea
son for publishing tbe name of people
whom we had beard spoken of. When
thi is don tbe delegate go to tbe
convention with some idea as to whom
their constituent prefer to have nom
inated, and of tbe fitness and availi
bility of the person whose name are
placed before the convention.
Harbison . Kincaid and C M.
Donaldson are where they belong in
tbe populist party. Tbe former has
always been a scapegoat an anything
for office and we do not know that
the latter is entitled to any less severe
criticism. It is due to the actions of
just such jumping-jacka a these that
Oregon is today in such imminent
danger of political disruption. Prin
ciple ha lone enough been (idetiscked
for personalities and tbe republican
party is now to be congratulated upon
it loss of such timber. This anytbiog-for-office
element should be relegated
to obscurity, and tbe sooner the belter.
It will not do to juggle with principle,
and when any political party under
take to maintain itself upon such
slack and flimsy pretenses, then it
merits tbe criticism it receives, and
becomes an object lesson foi reflective
minds to ponder o'er.
Fo years, as all know, the greatest
. question before the American people
was tariff or no tariff, and strange as it
may seem, not one word is uttered in
its behalf or defense by the three
beaded party. Republicans and dem
- ocrata fought the battle of many cam
paigns upon this issue, and now the
subject is completely lost sight of by
11 oat the republican party. Of course
there is no blame to attach to tbe as
tion of the three-headed convention
in this connection. Mr. Cleveland was
elected president upon this issue; and
what vm tbe result? Democracy and
populism know better than to go be
fore tbe American people again advo
cating such a destructive theory as
free trade. That theory wa thor
oughly tested by our people from 1893
to 1897, and the test was anything but
satisfactory. New and balf-batched
theories are advocated, with the cher
ished aaoie of republicanism attached,
hoping to deceive the people, and
gain precipitate our coon try to the
level of paupeiism from whence it is
now only recovering after a four-years'
trial of destrnctive democratic theories.
It is a sad misnomer upon the fair
name of republican that certain peo
ple class themselves as "free-silver-republican."
Where is there one par
agraph in tbe platform upon which
tbe three-headed nominee now stand
that bear any relationship to the re
publican platform of 1896 T And still
these people aim to deceive the voter
by "tacking to their kite the word re
publican. There certainly mast be
something in a name. These people
still embrace it as worthy of relation
ship. They certainly do so with the
full appreciation of tbe fact that no
party within our history ha every
done so moch good for the American
people, and were it not for their affin
ity for office they would cling to the
name and the party. Tbey sacrifice
principle with reluctance, but their
eagerness for office far overcomes their
better judgment, and they are known
and numbered among the element
clamoring for office, yet cherishing the
name of tbe party which has long
done them honor as a means to squeeze
into power by deception and fraud.
Tbe intelligent voter will consider all
these things before he casts hi ballot,
and when tbe time comes he will regis
ter bis disapproval in no unmistakable
way. ,. ' .
The importance of the presence of
every republican at the primaries in
. ths several precincts tomorrow is
equaled only by your presence at the
polls on election day. It is your duty
to be on hand and raise your voice
and register your ballot for or against
whom you consider would best repre
sent you in the nominating conven
tion to be held at Clatakanie on next
Wednesday. Tbe central committee
lias made it possible, as nearly as it
could, for the weaker precincts to be
more than equitably represented in
the convention, believing it to be a
stimulant to tbe voters to renew their
efforts in increasing the vote of th
precinct, in one sense, and in another
way to allow those who are separated
from the busier section of tbe county
the opportunity of getting out among
tbe people, thus learning and aeeipg
the temper of the people in regard to
niobium. It 1 a duty you ow your
self a a republican, a duty you owe
your country, to be present. Not then
is your full duty discharged. Be that
other attend tbe primaries person
who principle are good, whoa sym
pathies ar with you, but whose sge,
business, or other matters, might be
su.cn as would keep ibem away. I n
vail upon tirem to attend the primaries
tomorrow, and thus you pay in part
tne debt of your lull duty.
TNC COUHTT COMENTIOK.
The county republican convention
for Columbia couuty meets in Clats-
kani next Wednesday, and at their
meeting there is much important work
to do. As republicans, standing upon
a platform of protection, sound mouey
and sound principles principles laid
down in the St. Louis platform we do
not seek an alliance with any other
party or parties for office. There is
more honor in defeat while standing
firmly for what ws believe to be right,
than in victory gained by abandoning
everything except a desire) for a grab
into the public crib. A republican
we bave a plain duty to perform in
nominating a good ticket. Men should
be selected for office who can be relied
upon as straight republicans, and who
have not been engaged in trades and
swsps in order to further their own
ends.
Our plain doty is to nominate
ticket carrying with it first, principle;
second, boner; third, ability to meet
the requirementa of their duties;
fourth, men morally and intellectually
equal to, all emergencies, and men
wbose past record guarantee tbeir
success in th election. Jo the party
there are many such nti, and the
nomination of just such people it a
duty the convention owe the party.
Tbe republican party must make its
mind up to tbe fact right now that it
will be called upon to do battle against
every element in onr slate and county
which for year haa individually and
collectively striven to defeat it, and
especially this year, when all elements
are particularly combined on a general
crusade against tbe party in the hope
of getting the offices. Dictatorship
should be stubbornly opposed, and ths
delegates meet with but one purpose-
that of naming a ticket carrying witb
it the greatest strength.
Acting wisely upon the dictates of
good judgment, w believe the dele
gate will assemble with the avowed
determination of taking just such ac
tion as has been suggested above, and
it is tbs duty of tbe voters to see to it
in the primaries that men are sent to
the convention who may be depended
opon to carry these ideaa into execu
tion. The republicans of this county,
through their4 delegates, should go to
the convention next Wednesday with
the determination of nominating a
county ticket composed of good .straight
republicans, and if they do, tbe ticket
will certainly win easily when pitted
against a conglomeration of ism
mixed up into fusion.
Tab state republican convention
soon to meet in Astoria will be called
upon to nominate a ticket to present
to the people of this state, a ticket
carrying with it every element of per
fection, stability, and strength. As all
voters know, much depends upon tbe
bead of that ticket named. Tbe man
who is honored with the nomination
for tbe state's executive needs be s
man of sound principle and clean
record. Tbe republicans of Columbia
county bave a person in view who em
bodies all these requisites, and noth
ing eeuld give thera greater salisfac-
tioa than tbe nomination for governor
of Hon. T. T. Geer, of Marion county.
Mr. Geer needs no further recom
mendation to the people. We know
bim well. We bave watched bis
political life, and there is not one blot
upon it. As an earnest, conscientious
worker Mr. Geer haa no superior in
the state. His principle is unwavering
and unqualifiedly republican in all the
term indicates. Mr. Geer is a man of
the people. Ha is, ss we all know, but
a plain, blunt farmer, but a man of
unquestionable ability and vigor. He
has fought the battle of more tban one
campaign in this state, and is known
in every nook ana corner witnin us
borders as a man of sterling qualities
and fixed integrity. Mr. Geer bss not
identified himself with either of tbe
contending factions of tbe state, and
we-boaestly believe him to be tbe
strongest man tbs party could name.
We w isb to repeat that no act of tbe
state convention could give more gen
eral satisfaction to the people of Co
lumbia county than tbe nomination
for governor of Mr. Geer. If tbe con
vention acts wisely it will place Mr.
Goer's name at tbe bead of th ticket.
ARC THET SIHCEREt
Tbe wueation as to sincerity of pur
pose of thoss elements now combined
in this state to defeat tbe republican
party has been repeatedly asked on
onr streets within tbe last few days ;
whether the "unionists" are entitled
to tbe same degree of respect and con
fidence at the band of their oppon
ents as is either the old democratic
party or tbe straight-out populist party.
As far as the individuals are con
cerned, no republican would deny
tbsm tbs full enjoyment of their hon
est convictions. Each individual f un
ionist knows full well whether or not
be is honest witb himself and society.
Ha knows lust as surely whether be
believes any part are all of the plat
form of the populist party, which be
espouses; he knows just as well whether
bs has joined tbe "reform movement"
in order to satisfy a grudge against tbe
old party which contained more good
men tban offices. These are matters
of individual conscience, but when
thy are settled to the satisfaction of
the individual, tbs stubborn fact re
main, that you must be known by the
company you keep, and that tbe lead
ing element in the new party is com
posed of disappointed office-seekers,
who bave been either nominated again
and again, only to be defeated at the
polls, or else those who bave been in
tbe democratic or republican conven
tions, year after year, only to fiad that
their fvllowmen have preferred to nom
inate some other man for the office.
Add to this list the one remaining con
tingent, the newspapers, which would
reap their small bsrvsst by a success
ful "fusion, and we have the comple
ment of the "reform" shin whose
officer ar claiming to man a a ship
oi suu.
Were the issue of free and unlimited
coinage of silver the subject or and

THE CAUSE OF FtlSIOH.
One ot tbe prime reasons leading up
to a complete fusion of political par
ties lemocrats and populists m tbi
county and state this year, is the faot
that the leaders of those parties know
full wall it would be. the sberest folly
to go before tbe people siugl banded
in the face of the improved condition
of financial and commercial affair.
The combination which aought to en
tangle tbe masses in a snare of this
sort realised that tbe people of this
state are no longer in a condition to
give heed to their theories. There has
been a change ot heart with thous
ands of people in this conneotion
within tbe last year, a change against
the whims and isms ot this fusion ele
meut, which in 1896, through th mis
representation of facts, came so near
carrying onr slat over tbe' precipice
of disaster, and the change has been for
the better in tbe way of finance aad
trade with thousands and thousands
of people, who a year and a half ago
were ready to listen to anything that
promised relief from the turmoil of
democratic free trade and disaster.
"All weU that end well," and in
the success of the republican ticket all
has ended well for the country in th
vigorous prosecution of the policies
outlined by the administration. What
more could tbe voter tbe majority of
whom in this state are farmers ask
in the way of extrication from the
mire of democratic misrule than has
been their lot during the last year, and
which promises even better in th year
at present at nandr Uould a more en
oouraging condition of affair obtain f
Could any political party do more in
carrying out successfully what it ad
vocated and promised' If we are able
to look the facta squarely in the face
and pas th judgment of an unpreju
diced mind, we ay no.
Admitting that extreme northwest
counties of Oregon, comprising Colum
bia, Ulataop and Tillamook counties,
bave not felt the good effect of tbe
change quite so distinctly and sod
dsnly as havs the eastern and south
ern parts of our state, but we make
tbe statement here without fear of suc
cessful contradiction, that this section
of Oregon stands today in commercial
and business condition, 60 per cent
better off tban it was at the close of
the Cleveland free trade administra
tion. These counties are just now
upon the verge of the fullest enjoy
ment of a lively business period.
Sections of Oregon which produce
the first requirements are the first,
certainly, to be first benefited, and
here u where. Columbia county, with
th other named, fall short of ether
section of th state. We, of neces
sity, must depend upon a demand for
our product lumber, shingles snd
wood and ths saioyment of hustling
business conditions big crops and re
publican price for grain, wool and
cattle in lb sections producing these
article must certainly reach us at once
throng b a demand for onr products.
In tbe eastern part of our state there
is such an era of prosperity as haa not
bad an equal since the Cleveland party
went into power five years sgo, and
their success is causing tbsm to call
upon ns for tbe material to carry eat
tbeir plans for improvement.
Tbis is only local demand, but it is
fast being followed by a foreign de
mand, which is keeping our mills busy
day and night to supply. Our forests
are teeming with busy woodsmen en
deavoring to keep the supply of logs
in reach of the demand at prices al
most doable those prevailing under
that cherished Wilton free trade law
and which our democrrtie and popn
listio friend so completely ignore in
tbeir county and state platform.
There is a demand for all thsse prod
nets. Why Because our general
government now has a policy that af
ford protection to our industries and
gives our farmers and manufacturers
an opportunity of disposing of their
product at such figure at to again
place thera upon a sound busioett
footing, and we all know what that
meant tbe expenditure of million of
dallars in local improvements.
Witb all these facts staring popu
lists and democracy boldly in the face
is there any wonder that a complete
fusion bas been entered into, a com
plete sacrifice of principle and organi
zation. Farmers bave something else
to bony their minds and bands tban
listening to the calamitous wail of
demagogues and soreheads, who bave
bnt one purpose riding into office.
Unlee there can be something done
to stop the great tide of prosperity now
weeping over tbe country tbe ene
mies of th policy of protection to
home Industrie know their doom is
sealed. Our citation of these instances
is made merely to show the imminent
danger in which th opposition stands
and the cause of the alliance formed.
Prosperous Morrow County.
Tbe sheep and wool industry of Morrow
county is now In a blgbly prosperous con
dition, and all because of a protective tar
iff. During tbs past month or two offers
bave been mads at Heppner of 14 and 14.25
for straight swes before shearing and lamb
ing. There are 300,000 sbsep in Morrow
county, and 100,000 of tbsm will, right after
shearing, be sold aad driven East Tbey
will bring at Heppner $2.50 and I 8 a head,
after letting go of 10 pounds of wool, wblcb
is going to sell at Heppner at 10 to 16 cents
a pound. Wool is not consigned there now
as It used to be, but is sold, sorted and
baled on ths spot. Last year's crop brought
8 to 13 cents.
Tbs winter bas been very mild, aad there
bare been no stock losses and no check to
tbs growth of wool. Tber will be baled In
Morrow county tbis year (,000,000 pounds.
Shearers will bs paid 0 cents a bead, and
the work will last six weeks. Fast workers
sbear 150 besd a day, and all good crews
will average 100 head a day.

are not spoils hunters. '
Tbs men who took this action are tbe
recognised leaders ot th true populbt party
of this state, and their following will per
hspi amouut to 0000 or 8000 votes In the
stats. After sixteen of these men bad as
sembled In a ball by themselves they were
soon joined by enough more to luoreas ths
nusaber to 39, when tli work ot ornauira
lion began with vigor by speeches from th
most prominent men In tbe party, among
them being Dr. J. W. Hill, of Albany.
Tb doctor said:
'Get oat a good, stiff, strong statement ol
why we ar populists and not democrats,
Th r'emocratlo party has eaten the
fusion populists op. They have disappeared
from th stat ot Oregon, but tbe populist
party still lives and will lire. W fought

whether tbey will vote for the peoples party
or tbs demo-pop prodigy that Is being now
launched by oui erstwhile frltads."
John 0. Young, chairman of the populist
stat central committee, who wa with th
bolting populists, said: .
"I bar no question in my mind that af
ter th natienal eommtttoe meets we will be
recognised by that body a th regular pop.
nlist party of the state of Oregon."
. Tb general belief of those assembled
was that there was no hop ot winning this
year. Their great thought was to preserve
their party organisation. Tber could be
no doubt tbat fusionlet would be tb ob
jeot of a bitter attack a any otbtr polltt

A stat ticket was pat forth by tb ruid-
dle-of-the-roaders Saturday. Th conven
tion also issued an address to th voters of
tbe state asking endorsement of their work.
gome of the state offices were not BUed
but will be attended to later oa by tbs ex
ecutire commit tea. The middle-of-the-roaders
will not asssmbl again in state
eoavention this year, but th distrlot dsle
gatss wherever desirable, will be gathered
together to get oat their ticket. The ticket
as it now stands is as follows:
Governor, John C. Lace, of Grant; secre
tary of state, Ira Wakatield, ot Jackson;
state treasurer, J. K. Sears, ot Polk; su
perintendent of public Instruction, J. E.
Hosmer, Yamhill; suu priator. D. L.
Grace, Harney; congressman, first district,
i. L. Hill, Albany.
Th office ot suprtrns judge, attorney
general and congressman from the second
district were passed over temporarily.
Th middle-of-the-roaders said tbey were
looking only to reorganisation. Tbey were
tired of fusion, silvsr and democracy and
every semblance of the two old parties.
Gold Democrat.
The gold democrats of Oregon bare not
yet fully mads up their minds to place a
state ticket in th field this year, but In all
probability they will. They say tbey will
await the action of the Ute republican con-
Tea tion, as there will then be sufficient Urns
to get their ticket on tbe official ballot
should they decide to nominate one. Tbis
class of democrats cannot be depended
upon to support the ticket nominated at
tbe three-headed convention any more than
tbey supported Mr. Bryan In 1808. " Thry
sdbere closely to tbeir true democratic
doctrine, and especially when it comes to
wallowing tb free silver pill it is tbea that
their principle is Uo deeply touched. Tbe
same sentiment prevails among democrats
in this county, we believe.
at Heppner went down te 8 cents, and very
little demand at tbat, and sheep dropped
from 12.50 to $1 a head, and no sale, and
lambs went down to 75 cent. Now lambs
can be contracted for fall delivery at 12.
Th storting of tb big driv from Hep
aer cause considerable animation, and all
tb traveling outfits are bought tber. Th
shsep ar grassd along by asy stage until
within a day's railway travel of th Chicago
market, and are kept in good condition
there and are driven to slaughter as demand
requires. '
Judge W. P. Duttoa, on of th founders
of Morrow county, ssya that that whols ra
