Tm republican party of Oregon thia
year ahould know no faction. It
should lay aaide all quarrela and
bickerings, pat only the best men to
U front lor office, and go in to win.
the democratic and populist
papers are) denouncing: the pension
list, and aa the ranks of the veterans
grow thinner the more bold rebel ayra-
paimxers become, it muat be very
consoling to men who served in the
Union army to vote either of these tick
ets and then be claaeed as beggars.
The ordering of the war-ship Maine
to Hat aaa may not mean war, but it
ia an evidence that the Uuited States
ia going to defend its interests in
Cuban waters, and to be prepared for
ail possible emergencies. .Nobody in
(be United States wants to see war,
and it will not come unless Spain ia
the aggressor.
Ths republicans of thia county msy
as well make up their minds to this,
that there will be a practisally com
plete, bat not perfect, fusion of the
elements opposed to republican poli
tics and principles, and in order to de
feat it there must be perfect unity of
purpose. Set aside petty jealousies
and stand together for the public good.
Thi true valuation of tangible prop
erty in the United States, exclusive of
Alaska, at the close of the census
period, 1890, amounted to $65,037,091,
197. In this total no account is taken
of property not within the limits of
the United States, and no account is
taken of any term of credit money or
of promisor notes, mortgages or se
curities. Oppobtukitim are not to be slighted.
Those who do neglect them will find
others taking them up, and will leave
the inactive far behind ia the race.
Thia is true in politics as well as in
other matters, and the republicans of
this county should take warning. The
time has now come for us to com
mence the work of thorough organiza
tion so sa to take the political battle
field with a solid front.
TBI perpetuation of the republican
party in power, the perpetuation of a
protective tariff, the perpetuation of
the gold standard and the building of
the Nicaragua canal are four of the
necessary elements of general business
in the United States. The latter would
add wonderfully to the business of the
Pacific coast, and the prospects for its
early construction were never brighter
than at the present time.
Whkjt Judas betrayed bis master,
silver wss the medium of exchange.
So it was in Ohio and so it is in Or
egon when office seeking spoilsmen
are hypnotised by the silver mania,
and against their sounder judgment
are led from the ranks of the party of
national integrity, to serve unknown
Coda in a so-called party, which knows
neither principle nor purpose except
individual and party greed. Judas
went off and banged himself.
Bryan is a shrewd fellow, and id
that respect lie is to be admired. He
possessed the faculties of perceiving
that tbe American people yet enjoy
being humbugged, and he is faking
tnem to line bis own pockets. Bryan
ia a Barnum No. 2, and bis visit to
Mexico is another trick to bring bis
service at county fairs up to a larger
amount of money. Barnum had no
more use for the Shakespeare birth
place than Bryan has for free silver,
but it wss a paying mvestment.
Ths Oregonian ia trying to kill off
tbe republican party in this state by
dividing it up into factions. Down in
this neck of timber we know nothing
of Mitchell republicans nor Harvey
Scott republicans. We are ust plain,
old-fashioned, every-day-in-the-week
and twice oa Sunday, dyed in-the-wool,
without any tag-mark republicans.
And that's what the editor of the Ore
gonian ought to be, and what he must
be, if he hopes for the republican parly
to retain control of affiiirs in this state.
-Nebalem Republican.
How suddenly and totally did the
howl of the populist press cease when
they were proven to be grossly misrep
resenting facta. Information at all
times may ot be absolutely correct
regarding these great matters, but suf
ficient facts were presented to put an
everlasting quietus to tbe deficit howl.
The'Dingley bill msy not be earning
at present, sufficient revenue to meet
demands, but it beau that $262,000,000
bond-issuing, Wilsoa law all to thun
der, and before the end of 1898, ac
cording to present record, it will hare
proven itself a surplus earner.
A Sam Fsahcisco woman, accused of
killing her husband, made a plea of
insanity and was sent to an asylum
without trial. She has recovered and
will now be tried. Prehaps it would
be well in murder casss to accept the
insanity plea whenever it is offered,
and promptly send the culprit to a
place f confinement for dangerous
lunatics. This would be less expensive
than long trials, and would certainly
act as a "deterrent" ia each individual
cues, and would be discouraging to the
business of killing people and trying
to escape the consequences by work
ijig Ue ia sanity cl'.xigs.
The Eugeno Wunrd, a rsdioal popu
Hat paper, aays U'Ken it charged with
listing a thorough understanding; with
the republican state central oonmnlte
and is employed by that body as an
agent to fore.Ull, if possible, any
union, of ailver and reform forces.
There probably ia no doubt of the will
ingnei on the part of U'ren for anch
an alliance, but republioaua do not
need bia services. U'ren la Jnat that
sort of a pill, and populists knew what
he waa when they sent biru to the
legislature, and his political history ia
in peifeot accord with that of all dod-
uliat who have been placed in aiuiilar
positions for all time. He 'a cheap ; alas
too cneap. ma ainoenty of purpose
depende upon a consideration. He's
a typical populist.
Blakbst.sv. In this city, on Sunday, Jan
nary SO, 188S, ot paralysis, Abraham U.
Blakesley, aged 68 yaara and 1 month.
The circumstances leading np to the
death of Mr. Blakesley have been ataUd In
these oolums several times recently, and
it is unnecessary to stake any further state
moot of the causes. His death had been
expected for over a week by ths family, and
when tho church bell toiled at about S
o'clock last Sunday afternoon, our people
seeded nothing farther to confirm their
thoughts that the ed had eoma to tbe life
and worldly career of a useful and honored
citizen. Deceased was born in Vermilion
county, Indiana, oa December 31, 1831, and
came to Oregon 44 years ago. Shortly after
his arrival here he oontiuaed to California!
where ke remained about three years re
turning to Oregon and locating in Jackson
county. During his stay in that county
the great struggle between the North and
South precipitated, and to the credit of de
ceased he championed the cause of Union,
and was a moving spirit in the organisation
of the republican party in this state in 1853,
and in the presidential contest of 1860 be
exerted bis every effort for the success of
the party which preserved the Union, to
which cause he remained loyal until the
Great General commanded him to surren
der. After a short residence In California
deceased again returned to Beuton county,
where on December 6, 1862. he waa married
to Terresa Matt, and to them were born
ten children, six of whom are living. After
another brief residence in California with
his family, Mr. Blakesley returned to this
state, locating at Rainier, in this county,
where ke remained some time, and more
than twenty-live years ago deceased came
to St Helens and engaged in the hotel bus
iness, m which he has continued uninter
ruptedly until hie death. Mr. Blakesley
met with fair saccess in his bnsiuess, and
as a result bad considerable property. It
was oa March 11th, 1882, that deceased
met his severest reverse in life, for on that
data his good wife succumbed to tbe
ravages of measles, and with an infant
babe, was laid to rest ia Germany hill cem
etery. Since that time Mr. Blakesley had
reared his family ia this city as best be
could under the circumstances, and at all
times and nnder all circumstances he
proved himself a loving and sacrificing par
ent. Deceased had beea honored repeatedly
by the people of this city by electing him
several times to tbe office of councilman ;
by the people of this school district by el
ecting him director, in which capacity he
served faitaly for a great mtny years. He
was justice of the peace for this precinct
for nine successive years, and in 1894 was
a candidate for county treasuser on the n
publican ticket. During the time that de
ceased was in the hotel business it can be
said with all candor that a person in aeed
of succor or of aid ever appealed to him in
vain, which proves that generosity was his
crowning virtus, which, with other noble
traits, constituted a character of sterling
worth and nxed integrity. Deceased bad
but oae enemy and that was his own kind
self. As aa evidence of the esteem in which
he was held by those whe knew him best.
the largest concourse of friends followed
his remains to their last resting place of
any funeral procession ever formed in this
city. The religions services were held in
the large ball in this eity Tuesday after
noon, eonduoted by Elder Gue, of the M.
S. church, whose discourse was of the
highest character. From the ball to the
cemetery and at tbe grave the remains were
in charge of the Odd Fellows, nnder whose
rites they were interred, of which order de
ceased was a past noble grand, and whose
ceremonies were extremely Impressive.
Members ot the order from numerous
lodges were present, Including several grand
lodge officers, and the deep interest mani
fest by them proved that the mission of
their order is oae of love. Deceased leaves
six children, five in this city and one in
Uorvallis, three brothers and one sister ia
lowa, and one sister in Nebraska. These
have lost a kind and loving father and
brother and the community has lost a val
uable and useful citizen.

ent. The remains were laid to rest in the
