Give ttie U a chance. It taltes
time fur the nation to get back to the
solid eround from which it slamped
when it elected Cleveland nd dem
ocratic congreea in 1892.
If one wants to see a real scrambling,
scratching, slogging scrimmage, let
him wait till tins populists, and fres-
auver-democrata, and union bimetal'
ists, and Pennoyerites, and a. few other
"ites, try to "fuae." Welcome.
Thr populists patriots, Young and
Uren, who have made this part of the
land weary with . their howls for "re
form," are bring ahown up in their
true character, that of cheap, dirty,
nasty, disreputable and disgraced petty
politicians, unfit to be entrusted with
the amalk'gt . responsibility, and on
whose shoulders the slightest honor
would blush for shame. Welcome.
Air investigation of the subject
shows that the thirteen countries
which made formal protests against
certain features of the tariff law of
1897, in the two mouths in which the
details of our exports can be obtained,
have purchased sl3l,44b,0UJ in value
of our products end merchanJise,
eainst only $107,077,588 in the cor
responding iiionths of but year under
the Wilson law.
Thb increase of dutiable goods en
tered at tne port of New York baa been
so marked since the opening: of the
new sear that Appraiser Wilbur F,
Wakeman has prophesied a gain in re
ceipts amounting to $4,000,000, as
compared with January 1897. This is
a continuation of the favorable results
which helped to make a surulus of in
come over expenditures for the month
of December last, and furnishes addi
tional proof of the actual existence of
prosperity.
Constant growlers are a standing
menace to prosperity, la nine cases
out of tea the so-called "financial
watch dogs" are themselves financial,
moral and mental failures. History
proves that a successful student is a
safe and successful teacher; a, success
ful business man ia private affairs is a
safe party in whom to trust public
affairs, and the career of faultfinding
failures in private and public enter
prises is too well known let admit ol
comment.
' Ir those who think of going to the
Yukon country to get rich will work
as hard and undergo as many priva
tions here at home in the pursuit of
money they will, we have no doubt, be
richer at the end of five . years here
than will be the average of those who
go to the Klondike. The Klondike is
rich in gold but the chances of the
average man making money is greater
in Oregon than there, while the chances
of freezing or starving to death are
wholly in favor of the former.
Stats; Tkkasuber Metscham has
made bis semi-annual report, showing
the balance in the state treasury, and
reports the balance of unexpended
funds to be $861,763.27 This seat
little sum baa been collected off the
taxpayers of Oregon, and locked up in
the hands of the state treasurer (pre
sumably at least), while the state is
paying interest on very nearly that
amount of outstanding warrants for
current expenses. This is one of the
legacies left by the was-to-have-been
legislature of 1897. Had the legisla
ture organized, the money collected
for state taxes would have been re
turned through the channels of trade
to the people, where it would today be
performing its ordinary functions, And
the interest charges would be stopped.

There are come plain truths and
wholesome advice in the following
from the Portland Chronicle:
Republicans should stand as a unit.
The party that saved the nation in its
hour of peril is not a back number.
Its principles are those of good gov
ernment and fo the welfare of the
masses. Its mission is not accom
plished. It embraces within its ranks
the very best there is of American
citizenship. To its csre, alone, can be
safely entrusted the best welfare of
the people of the Great Republic it has
preserved in war and guided to fat
pastures in peace. :
The country is prosperous, now,
after a fearful period of ruin during
democratic misrule. The money con
gestion that paralyzed business is
loosening. The sound money of re
publican creation is circulating in the
channels of trade, and we begin to
Imar the old time hum of industry.
In every truth, the mission of the
grand old party has not ended. It has
only began a new and grander career.
Nevsr before were factional struggles
in the party more dangerous to public
welfare than at this hour, when all the
WDn4 elements of society are combin
ing against good government. Never
( .'ire s it o important that Oregon
