It it evident that Mr. Hindi, cbair-
man of the republican state central
committee, doe not intend to resign
juat for the purpose of pleasing a few
enemies of Senator Mitchell.
. A market for American wares that
will insure living wages fur American
workmen will be the inevitable result
of McKinley's election. The man
who ia out of employment entirely or
working for starvation wages should
not overlook this point.
Just thirty-two years passed after
the democratic split in 1860 before
that parly regained possession of all
branches of the government. Again
there is an irreprvsiible conflict in the
democracy, and again there is
mash up. How long a quarter of a
century, a third of a century, a half
century will the democracy be un
der the ban this ti.Tie? Or will the
democracy disappear after thit can
vass as the federalist, the national
republican and the whig parties did
long ago?
Ths reported large decrease in the
importations of English good tends
to prove the correctness of the repub
lican theory that under a revenue
tariff there comes a time when, in
consequence of the inability of the
people to buy imported goods,'
.custom duties fall off and the treas
ury collapses, while under a pro
tective tariff the people prosper and
have money to spend for foreign lux
uries, and so pay more to the govern
ment in the form of duties on imports
than they do when times are made
hard by an anti-protective psilicy.
Education in politics is by a slow
process ordinarily but this year seems
an exception to the rule by the way
old line democrats are openly declar
ing their intention to - support Mc
Kinley and Hobart. Let the good
work go on. Truly it may be said that
"there is no man so blind a he who
wont see." The democratic party baa
given free trade a fair trial and it has
proven to the satisfaction to all reason
able men to be a failure, consequently
it can well be expected that large
numbers of democrats will support the
republican ticket in is talL

The teachers' institute which is to
take place in St. Helena, beginning
on July 27th and ending on the 31st,
ought to be made a power for good,
and it can be if those interested in
education and educational advantages
take hold of tbe matter in a proper
spirit. These gatherings of tbe teach
ers and others where methods of teach
iog and government of schools are dis
cussed in an intelligent way by persons
- witu actual experience are interesting
and educating to those who take part
ana at toe same time are paving tbe
way for higher civilization. The old
addage that, "the band tbat rocks the

in it more trutn tnan poetry, but at
tne same time it becomes more ap
parent every day that the influence
which directs the mind in our com

The democratic convention at Chi

nominating V. J. Bryan of Nebraska
for president, and Arthur Sewell of
Maine for vice president. - The demo
cratic platform is clear cut for free
silver and free trade two things
wnicb, il enacted into law, could n-
possibly work together profitably the
latter already having proved an abso
lute lailure, aud tbe former so far is a
matter of theory. Bryan is but 36
years old, or 10 years tbe junior of
any man ever before naminated for
. the presidency in this country. He
served ia the fifty-first and fifty-second
congresses and is a brilliaul orator.but
bis theory for raising revenue to de
fray the current expenses of govern
ment is daily being condemned by
his party. The effort of the democracy
to shift the issue from tariff to the
money question in this campaign is
an acknowledgement tbat democratic
policy of tariff for revenue only is a
failure, and consequently the issue
must be shifted to another cause for
the purpose of commanding tbe con
