An Incident ot tbe cattle boom of
fifteen rears ago that Is Illustrative ot
the eplrlt of the timet was the $5,000
banquet at Dallas, Texas, at wblcb 500
of the cattle barons were entertained.
Everything was of tbe best, aays the
Butte Miner. The champagne was from
tbe vine-clad bills of France, the fruit
from the valleys ot California. Tbe
cattle owners lauded and complimented
each other, orated about their successes
and sneered at the Legislature aud tbe
National Land Commission. Especial
ly did the newspapers, wblcb had criti
cised their highhanded usurpation ot
the lands needed for agriculture, come
In for criticism, and at last tbe only
newspaper man present was called on
for a speech In reply. A Governor of
tbe Lone Star State, who bad once said
that the State did not want immigra
tion was toastmaster and be prefaced
bis introduction of the Journalist with
some slighting remarks regarding tbe
press. Angry at the light in which he
had been placed the newspaper man
replied:
"Gentlemen: Ton may sneer at tbe
settler whom you call a 'Nestor and
may consider yourselves safe from all
Injury at his bands, but let me tell you,
yon are not. A man with a boe has
poked his bead over your barbed wire
fences, Tou may kill him, but to-mor
row there will be two of them, and
next day four or eight. Land that will
produce f 20 worth of wheat cannot be
kept for tbe pasturage of a $5 cow. In
a few years the man with a noe will
have you on the run."
The cattlemen laughed and consld-
think
speaker meant It or that be told the
truth. But be did, and bis prophecy
came true. No other such banquet was
ever held. The "man with a hoe" car
ried a pair of nippers In his pocket and
with them be cut the strands of fence
wltb wblcb the great cattle ranges
were Inclosed. The cowboys could tot
prevent him. and tbe tews could not
keep him out All over the great ranges
of the far West, where, sentry.llke, the
herders rode through long days and
nights, are now farms, homes and vil
lages. One of the stories regarding tbe reck
less extravagance of tbe cattle owners
is that told by CoL John Brittnn, a
Texas capitalist and officeholder in the
old days. He had come up tbe trail
to Abilene, Kan., and was gazing on tbe
wonders of a typical cattle town, where
tbe cowboy was getting rid of his year's
earnings in a single night and bavins
what he designated as a royal time.
Two cattlemen had returned from New
York, where they had been living off tbe
fat of the land and loading themselves
down with bric-a-brac and good whisky.
"Jim," said John, "that's mighty fine
watch you have there." '
"Yes," replied the other. "1 got the
ticker at one of the biggest stores in
New York. It cost me a lot of money."
"I've got a finer one," said John calm
ly pulling an Inlaid chronometer lrom
his pocket
"I guess not What did It cost?"
"Paid 1325 for her, spot cash. What
did yours cost?"
"Cost me $373,'

From th Capital Jourual, Saleui, Oregon.
Salem, Or., can boast of no better
known private oitisen than Captain
William Benson. To the old rest-
dents, as wail as to the school children,
bis figure is as familiar as that of Ml.
Hood or tbe state capital.
Captain Benson, of the First Ken
tucky battery, detached from the 1 1:1th
Illinois infantry, is now seventy-four
years old, and has taken part in twen
ty-seven hard-fought battles, besides a
great many Interesting
He is pensioned for injury in the
breast, from concussion of a shell, and
for a wonnd in the right shoulder,
caused by leaping from a oar while be
ing taken as a prisoner from Anderson
ville to Pine Forest. For ths past twen
ty years he has suffered aluioat con
tinually from malaria aud shortness of
breath, and has been afflicted with rheu
matism in tbe legs and shoulders to
suoh an extent that ha had not seen a
well day in all that time. He was
also afflicted with constipation aud
piles. Eighteen years ago Mr. Benson
removed from Illinois to Oregon, on
socount of his failing health, aud since
the close ot tbe war has "not been able
to support himself by manual labor,
and has had almost constant medical
attendance by physioians of all the dif
ferent schools of praotioe. To see him
now, tipping the scales at 810 pounds,
enjoying regular health, his cheeks
mantled with a fresh, rosy complex
ion, walking off proud and erect, with
a fresh, firm, vigorous step for a man in
his seventy-fourth year, is enough to
make one believe in the possibility of
Ponce de Leon's fabled Fountain of
Youth.
Captain Benson is not only a hero ot
the Civil War, but a man worth con
siderable property. He says be wonld
part willingly with his interest in all
his earthly possessions rather than be
placed back in the debilitated condition
where he lingered for a score of years.
"I suppose," said he, laughing,
"that what yon are after is an adver
tisement for Pink Pills, but I want to
say that I am very glad to give yon
this testimonial, as I am convinced it
will" relieve a great deal of suffering,
if it can become widely known. I am
firmly oonvinoed, after an experience
of over fifty years with both patent
medicines and physicians, that if every
family oould keep these Pink Pills in
the , house they wonld never need a
doctor.
"I have paid out over $1,000 for doc
toring with tbe best pyhaioians at
Salem, but not a cent for myself since
a year and a half ago. It was then
that I first heard of Pink Pills I got
tbe first box at a drug store, and had
not much confidence in them when I
began to take them. I took one box
before I got much benefit, but by the
middle of the second box the pain in
my breast began to disappear, and the
rheumatism in my shoulder went
away. The shortness ot breath was
alleviated, and I began to sleep like an
infant. For the first time in twenty
years I realised the lnxnry of sound
sleep.and my system began to recuperate
"By the end ot the third box it had
taken away all my rheumatism and
stiffness in the muscles and joints,'
and I began to feel as nimble as a boy,
and could do as good a day's work as
ever, but for my wounds. I enjoy the
best health I ever enjoyed in my life.
My natural weight increased from ten
to twenty pounds. My flesh is solid
and my skin is as clean and fresh as a
baby's. I had tried every remedy un
der the snn for piles, but without re
lief. At times they were near killing
ma Sciatica rheumatism had laid me
up in bed for months at a time. Pink
Pills have cured all these things, and I
have not felt an indication of piles or
rheumatism for eight months. People
who see me now can not believe that I
am the same man. My face looked
drawn, my eyes were bloodshot, my
skin was scurvied, snd loonld not have
had a worse appearance it I bad un
dergone starvation on an artio expedi
tion. I can now eat whatever I have
a relish for, and all I want of it, and it
don't hurt me.
"I nsed to be constipated continu
ally, and I have taken wheelbarrow
loads of other pills, but never got per
fect relief until I tried Pink Pills.
I am now taking two pills a week,
and sometimes I go without them
for s month, and, as I said, I enjoy
continuous good health. I have got
rid ot rheumatism and everything else.
Pink Pills perform wonders. They go
