" School Opinio. The sprint term
of our city school opened last Monde
with Prof. Baker In charge. Mr. Baker
cornea well recommended, and the
present term of sshool promises to be
ai profitable hi the one juit closed by
Mr. Uaee, which was said to have been
the most profitable one taught here
for several yeara. Mr. Oaae la teach
ing the Houlton school at present,
and that, too, la progressing uioely
"Ma Ovibdoard." There was a
great deal of exoitement created among
the fishermen at the mouth of Lewis
river Tuesday morning as the ateamer
Mascot came down from Kinafleld,
She was lust emerging from Lake
river and a man, whose name we have
beon unable to leara, stepped upon the
railing on the cabin deck of the steam
er and deliberately Jumped,ovarboard,

men near by to pick up the mao, which
they did, and who, it was learned, wsa
orasy. What was done with him we
did uot learn.
Fibhirmix Doing Will. While
the strike is in progress on the lower
river, fishermen at this plaoe have been
doing vary well. Day or night makes
little difference to them because the.
water is at a good stage to fish. Last
Friday morning the Telephone took
from the wharf at this place over seven
tons of salmon consigned to down
river canneries. Monday morning an
other consignment of aver six tons
was ahlpped on the same steamer. In
addition to this quite an amount ia
ahipped to Portland each day on other
steamers. Altogether there le a large
amount of money paid oat bore daily
lor Dsn. .
Bint for Distinction. Last Tues
day aa the steamers Thompson and
Shaver wore attempting to land at
Caplea a disastrous collision was nar
rowly averted. The Shaver had whis
tled for the landing, and the Thomp
son attempted to take the landing
ahead of the Shaver, and in so doing
she came down stream at almost full
till and crashed into the Shaver. Her
rata of apeed was so high that she did
not stop until she struck the beach,
where she hung hard and fast. The
affair happenedjio quickly that few of
the passengers anew anything about
it until all danger waa passed. The
Shaver afterward went back and towed
the Thompson off the beach, without
which the latter would have been de
layed several hours, probably.
CENTRAL COMMITTEE Ml ITS. Pur-
auant to agreement at a previous meet
ing, the central committee of the re
publican party of Columbia county
met at Clatskanie laat Monday after
noon. Those In attendance wereT.
C. Watts, of Deer Mand ; Ed Elliott,
of Marshland; O. T. Daywalt, of Ne
iialem ; S. B. Rose, . of Auburn ; E. 0.
Blackford, of Clatskanie ; W. M. Perry,
of Rainier; and D. Davis, of Union.
Among other matters which came be
fore the committee was the wilhJrawal
from the ticket of Miles 8beeirn, the
nominee for coroner. The name of
Dr. A. P. McLaren, of Rainier, waa
presented, and by the committee nom
inated to fill the office of coroner on
the republican ticket. Other detail
matters we'o attended to and the com
mitteemen returned to their homes
Tuesday.
For a Rroatta. A citixen'a meet
ing waa held Monday eveuing at the
courthouse to discuss the question of
a regatta at this place during the coming-
summer. W, B. Dillard aoted aa
chairman and II. Allen secretary. Mr.
Dillard stated the object for which the
meeting bad been called and explained
at some length the advisability of
holding a regatta at this place, after
which a committee of Ave, tucluding
the chairman of the meeting, was ap
pointed to look into the proposition
and report at the next meeting, which
is to be held next Monday evening in
the council chamber at 7 :30 o'clock.
The committee are W. B. Dillard, J.
R. Beegle, Thomaa Cooper, Jacob
George and Jamea Muokle. It ia be
lieved that the proposed regatta can
be made a success if the citixens will
take aa interest in the matter.
Strike Still Ok. The fishermen's
atrike still coutinuee with no visible
prospect of an early settlement.
Meantime fishing goea right along at
thie plaoe unmolested, and good catch
es are made almost every day. Some
of those fishing here are union men
and eome are not, but be that as it
may, the fishing grounds in this vicin
ity are occupied day and night. Some
little excitement was caused here last
Wt'dnesday when a report came from
down the river that a company of the
atrikers were on their way up the river
and had reached Mayger, and had
been destroying fishing gear wherever
found in use, and also confiscating any
fish found in boats. During the past
week there has been aa occasional
missionary from the fishermen's union
at Astoria in this place for the osten
sible purpose of persuading those en
gaged in fishing here to desist until
such time as the strike ia aattled, but
all efforts in that direction have proven
futile, ainoe fishing goea on the same
very day. It is not believed the
atrike will be of long duration, how
ever, as it ia generally conceded that
the packers can well afford to pay the
price asked and atill make a hand
aome profit. The season ia rapidly
passiug by, so that the packers cannot
afford to hold out much longer. There
haa seldom been a aeason in the his
tory of the canning business when the
packers did not declare they could not
afford to pay the price asked, yet in
nearly every instance they did pay the
price and made money, and no doubt
history will repeat Itself this year.

HE TALKED ON PROTECTION
Mr. Cleeton Opened the Cam
paign at Clatskanie.
A Convincing Argument la Favor
of High Proteotton-ElnthBsl-alto
Heating.
The spring campaign is now well
under way in this county, and the
people of Clatsksnie held their firat
political meeting last Tuesday eve
ning, and one can truly say the pot is
boiling. The large hall of E. W. Con
yers was packed with anxious listeners
to the ronvincing argument of Mr.
Cleeton, who for one hour and a half
produced the most convincing line of
argument yet presented to the people
of that city. Certainly there is suffi
cient subject matter for republican
argument, and Mr. Cleeton ia the one
to quickly grasp the situation and
show ud fallaoiea which do now
exist and which have existed for nearly
four yeara. He made his argument
strictly on the question of protection,
as that certainly ia the paramount la-
sue before the American people today.
Mr. Cleeton concluded his argument
by heartily endorsing the action of the
lata elate republican convention on
financial matters, and he appealed to
the republicans of that precinct to
stand by and support their ticket first,
list and all' the time. Mr. Cleeton,
like all other republicans in the county,
saya their ticket will be elected this
year by a handsome msjority, not
merely because of tbe superiority of
its personnel, but because it la repub
lican, and that ia what the people of
ibis country are now clamoring for.
They want republicans in office be
cause they have faith in them as men,
because they have been trid and
found not wanting, and principally be
cause they are republicans, for to that
Jiarty do the people look for relief
rom tbe free trade predicament in
which the country ia now writhing.

light being on the money question, which
resulted in the platform declaring for the
free coinage ef silver at the ratio of 10 to 1.
After two days deliberation the following
ticket was placed In nomination:
For supreme judge, John Burnett of Ben

THg rLATFOStf ADOPTED.
The democratic party of tbe state of Ore
gon, in convention assembled, do make, de
clare and adopt the following resolutions:
First Whereas, the present depressed
condition of tbe country and the shrinkage
of values are largely due to tbe financial
system which has controlled tbe nation for
mors than twenty years last past, we, the
democracy of the state of Oregon, hereby
declare ourselves as unalterably opposed
to the single gold standard, and demand
the immediate return to tbe constitutional
standard of gold and silver by the restora
tion by tbe general government independ
ently of any foreign power, of tbe unre
stricted coinage of both gold and silver into
standard money at tbe ratio of 16 to 1, and
upon terms of exact equality, as they ex
isted prior to 1873, tbe silver coin to be a
full legal tender equally wltb gold, for all
debts and does, public and private, and we
denounce all discrimination by tbe govern
ment against either gold or silver euriency
of the country. We demand that the sec
retary of the treasury shall coin into stand
ard silver dollars, as soon as practicable all
tbe silver bullion now in the treasury of the
United 8tates, which represents the silver
seigniorage or coinage profit to the govern
ment; also all silver bullion that may here
after be offered for coinage.
"Second We demand tbe repeal of all
specific contract laws, state and national.
"Third We favor the construction of tbe
N'lcsragaan canal, and its control by tbe
general government.
"Fourth We are In favor of a tariff for
revenue only, so adjusted that it shall effect
alike eur commerce, our agriculture, oar
labor and eur manufacture.
"Fifth We demand of tbe general gov
ernment rigid enforcement of the Monroe
doctrine.
"Sixth We demand a reduction of all
salaries, federal and state, commensurate
with the depressed condition of the conn-
try; that the compensation of all state of
ficers shall be kept strictly within the letter
of the constitution; that all laws now ex
isting providing extra fees or compensation
for any duty or senrice imposed by law
upon such offices shall be repealed.
"8eventhWe demand the repeal of the
laws creating the railroad commission, and
all other useless commissions.
"Eighth We Instruct our delegates elec
ted to represent us in the national eenven
to support only a candidate in favor of the
free ana unlimited coinage of silver at tbe
ratio of 16 to 1.
"Ninth We demand the reenactment of
the mortgage tax law, and the amendment
of our assessment laws so that all recorded
indebtedness of the taxpayers shall be de
ducted from his assessment.
"Tenth We denounce the extrayugant
acts of tbe last legislature as co-extensive
with fraud, jobbery, and squandering of
ths people s money, and we censure and
bold the republican majority responsible
for the present condition of our public debt
and high rate of taxation.
"Eleventh We favor judicious expendi
ture of the public money for the purpose of
opening up and improving our waterways
and harbors.
Twelfth Religions difference should
find no place in American politics, and the
democratic party is unalterably opposed to
the spirit of Intolerant bigotry fostered for
political purposes by those who seek to
breed discord and animosities among tbe
citixens of the public; secret political bod
ies are a curse to party, state and nation.
We heartily welcome the assistance of all
good citixens who will co-operate ia the
suppression of any political movement or
ganised for religious prescription.
"Thirteenth Resolved, that we, the dem
ocratic party of the state of Oregon la con
vention assembled, hereby earnestly ask
the congress of the United States to take
up the bills now pending before your re
spective bodies, vis: The honse of repre
sentatives and the senate of the United
States, providing for a snrvlval of pension
of the Indian war veterans of the United
States, and pass said bills.
"Fourteenth We favor the preservation
of the salmon Industry of Ibe state by abol
ishing all flshtraps, fishwheels and small-
mesh gear, and denounce the republican
party of the state for refusing to keep Its
pledge to afford such argent relief."
