Aa the Urns drawi near for tbs county
convention, Interest in the result of Its de
liberation! become more intenne, end can'
didatei for the various office and the f rlendi
ot each become mors snxlous aa to the
strength of their favorites. At thla time
no one srsius to have a comer on a noml
nation at the handa of tbs republican con
ventlon, and all are praotlcalljr at sea aa to
who will get plaoee on the ticket. There
need be little fear, however, but that out
ol the splendid array of aspirants good
men will be selected for the eeveral posl
lions.
It might not be outof place hers to enum
erate soma of the aspirants for nominations
eubject to the decision of the convention
For the office of representative to the leg
islature the names of Hon. Norman Mer
rill, ot Olstekanls, Judgs Blanchard, of
Rainier, and Dr. H. R. Cliff, of St. Helena,
are prominently mentioned.
Tbs offlcs of county Judge will not go
begging for want of worthy men who are
willing to act In that capsoity if selected to
do so, snd ss proof of till assertion tbs fol
lowing gentlemen are being urged by their
friends for the place; J. B. Doan, of Rain
ier, H. L. Warren, of Clatekanle, R. Cox,
of St. Helens, O. W. Barnes, of Qttlncj-
and J. H. 8 wager, of Houlton.
For county clerk Judaon Weed, the pres
ent efficient incumbent, seems to have no
opposition for renomlnatlon, and doubtless
will be nominated by acclamation.
The sheriff's office, however, will not be
such easy game, as there srs several gentle
men mentioned prominently for that piece,
snd all bavs scores of friends who are look
lag snd earnestly laboring In the interest
of their favorite. Among the names tbst
havs so far come to our knowledge are
U. W. Hlakealey, the present efficient dep
uty, T. C. Watte, who has proven bis abil
ity to Ml tbs office, A. B. Little, ex-county
surveyor, A. L. Clark and Beaton Smith
of Rainier. Any of these gentlemen are
aaid te posaeae the ntceasary qualifications
to fill the office ef sheriff to the satisfaction
of the people.
The county assessor's office, tbs most
thankless job in tbs county, where the in
cumbent receives mors abase for lees pay
than any other public servant, will be con
tested for by Martin White, the present In
cumbent, and M. F. Hasen, of Warren
who aerved In that capacity in 1883-4.
While it te perhapa true that the office of
county assessor is more Important than
ony other position of trust In tbs county,
yet It seems that there are at present but
two aspirants for the place, and no doubt
whit ever one of them gets it bs will wish
it bad been the other fellow.
The school superintendent will be eon-
tee ted for by J. O. Watts, who ha held
that position with credit to himself for
three terms and whose services bsvs gener
ally been satisfactory , and I. B. Shoemaker,
of Goble.
E. M. Wharton, the present Incumbent
of the treasurer's office, and C. H. Newell
of this city, will contend for that office, in
all probability, and there is not know to
bs aoy others looking that way at thla
time. Either one of them would be a aafe
man as custodian of the county'a finances
There seeme to be no other name men
tloned for surveyor except that of W. N
Meserve, of Delens, the present efficient
official.
There Is also a commissioner to be elected
this time to serve four .rears. Like the as
sessor, tba commissioner's principal com
pensation is kicks and growla from a too
selfish public and the man who gets ths
office Is usually sorry for It after a little ex
perience. The names mentioned for tbis
place, however, are T. E. Mills, of Verno
nia, W. D, Caae. of Pittsburg, A. J. Orwtg,
of Mist, and J. A. Van, of Fiahbawk.
For coroner nearly every man in lbs
county has been mentioned, and no doubt
there srs many who would accept the ar
duous duties of that lucrative office.
There may be others aspiring to the of-
flora above named who are equally worthy,
bat if so their names havs not reached ths
sara of Ths Mist reporter, consequently ws
give only what Information has been re
ceived np to this time, and If there are oth
ers whose names do not appear in tha fore
going it Is the fsnlt of Mm who bss not
