whioh, aooording to analysis made by
Professor U Falkenan, of the State
Assay Offloe in San Franoisoo, is found
to be ohemioally pure. At the instanoe
of Norton, Teller & Koden, and other
San Franoisoo houses, a number of
testa were made, with the result that
the salt produoed from this mine has
been found to be equal to the best Eng'
lish salt in the market for butter mak
ing and table use, and tor meat and
fish packing, milling and dairy pur
poses. The lump stock salt from this
mine is preferred by the large cattle
companies to any other salt, by reason
of its purity, dryness and solidity; also
. beoause it is the most economical for
stock feeding. Owing to its firmness
and purity it does not deliquesce when
placed out on the ranges.
The company con trolls over 1,000
acres of mining ground in whioh the
salt is mined from large deposits, as
dear and transparent as crystals. The
mine is connected with Salt Rock Sta

miles, especially constructed by the
Traotion Engine Company, and upon

The oompany is about to oommenoe
the erection of extensive works at the
mine, and upon their completion will
be enabled to supply the purest salt
ever produoed for butter-making, table
use, meat and fish-packing. Lump salt
for stock-feeding and milling purposes
is now being shipped.
The buildings at the mine are oon
strncted of salt, and the oompany is
about to erect an office building at the
railroad station out of rook salt, whioh
will attraot great attention. Passen

The only ladies' smoking club known

room, elegantly fitted op with the most
luxurious furnishings, including divans

of a smokers' club. There are books and
periodicals, but it is in no seose a liter

young women, the number being limit

When one member marries or leaves
the city, another lady is elected to fill
the vacancy, and it is said there are al

exclusive secret association was discov

things Beea and Heard at tae Capitol at
Washington.
One of the saddest places about the
whole capitol is that little corner oil of
statuary hall where womeu wait the
slow motions of their "influence." The
condensed heartache and desperation
that are crowded into that narrow space
day after day are enough to softeu the
most hard hearted. Out there, one day
this week, sat a widow. She was old
and poor. It was a raw, oold day, bnt
the desolate womau had bnly a tbin
shawl about her and one shoe was all
broken at the side, so that only her
stocking kept ber foot from the ground.
She had sent in for "her" representa
tive, aud when he came out, he was
coolly courteous, but finally seemed to
warm up a little, and, at her earnest
solicitation, promised to see Senator
Somebody about getting her a place. Be
was so etnphatio in saying that she nmtt
not worry, but leave all to him, that
she turned to leave him with her face
fairly transfigured with a glow of hap
piness. When she had disappeared over
the last "whispering stone" toward the
senate, that heartless member turned to
the page and said sternly:
"See here I If that old guy comes
fooling round here after me again, I am
not in my seat ! Do you sabe?"
The boy "sabed" all straight enough
and gave a frightened promise to re

There is a regular King Humbert of
Italy on the floor of the house, and it
will surprise him greatly to read this

particular attraction is a pair of fierce

Mr. Poole of New York. Really, the
likeness to the royal Italian is quite
startling.

One of the remarkable and enjoyable
features of the Fifty-fourth congress is
the absence of smoking upon the floor.
Men like Mr. Quigg and Mr. Tarsuey,
who all but sleep with cigars in their
months, find it rare self denial to go
without smoking, but tbey content
themselves with a "dry smoke," twist
ing and chewing to pieces almost as
many cigars as they would otherwise
smoke. The only man seen to smoke de
liberately on the floor was Mr. Powers
of Vermont He was clear back by the
fireplace and was busy thinking when
be lighted his cigar, and the expression
of cherubic content which went over
his face when be settled back in bis

something to remember. -
The ladies who watch with such in

Mr. Miller looked a little surprised,
but replied courteously that be didn't
know exactly what bis questioner meant.
I want to know which camp you
round up in when there is a general
stampede?"
"Do yon mean to ask my politics? '
asked Mr. Miller.
Precisely," said ihe stranger. "I'm
off my own reservation snd I've kinder
lost my bearings. I m on the trail of
the man who corralled a permit to come

state, and the herd boss out hyar allows
that I don t sabe things none too proper

long to the other outfit, you look fit to

And who would you like to see?
asked Mr. Miller, with a broad smile at
the interest the man was eliciting from
loungers in the corridors.
I reckon you all know him like a

And who is that?" asked a gallery
occupant of his friend, who seemed to
know everybody and had been keeping
up a running comment on everybody
and everything in the house while the
Bayard resolution was being discussed,
as Mr. Dingley of Maine addressed the
chair. "
He's one of the most highly respect

at his left.

responded the friend, and went on de

WIUIA.M Q. ROBINSON, WHO 13 OYINS
IN WASHINGTON.
Ha Is Kaowa as tha "Savior of Babies.1
Has Devised an Appllaaee to Cool Fever
Pntleats Trvluc to Recur a lateat to
Help His Fatnlly.
William O. Robinson, called the
"Savior of Babies" because of his iu
vention, the incubator, is dying iu Wash-
inston.
There Is being tested in the New York
hospital one of bis inventions which
may be of far greater service to human
ity than the incubator. It is a contriv
ance to lower the temperature aud
thereby save fever patients. It has been
very successful iu its operation. If the
dying man should by great good fortune
recover, his future wealth would be as.
lured.
When Robinson went to the New
Tork hospital one day last summer to
get one of his incubators introduced at
that institution, he noticed a fever pa
tient in one of the wards. They were
using the old time method to cool this
patient's temperature. There was a step
ladder at the head of his cot, aud on the
top of it was a water pail with a piece
of ioe in it A rubber tube over tne side
of the pail, descending, entered a rubber
bag that rested on tbe patient's breast,
Another tube was arranged so as to car
ry off the water from the bag into
waste pail at the bedside. Robinson was
Interested.
He asked the doctors abont it, and
tbey told him that the contrivance was
often a failure and left great room for
improvement If the patient suddenly
turned over, he was apt to bring the pail
of water down on himself. Then, too,
the water in the pail was likely to run
out before the nurse could be aware that
the bucket was empty, and the condition
of tbe patient would be seriously jeopar
dised by the sudden stoppage of the cold
application.
The inventor went back to his little
tinsmith shop in East Twenty-sixth
street and built a contrivance that
should furnish a steady flow of cold wa
ter. To minimize Ihe labor and prevent
the sudden checking of the stream he
used the same water over again.
He built frame of brass rods about
6 feet high. Two copper cylinders caps
ble of holding ten gallons each were
placed on sliding rods in a vertical posi
tion, and by an arrangement of chains.
weights and pulleys tbe cylinders were
made to balance one another. While
one,' filled with water, is at tbe top,
just above the patient's head, the other
rests on the floor below. Tbe top one is
filled with ice water aud raised by tbe
turning of a crank at the side. Rubber
tubing passes from it down into
"worm," which is a great improvement
over the rubber bag of the doctors.
After the water has circulated through
the coils of the "worm" that lies on the
patient's body, it passes into tbe lower
cylinder. As soon as that cylinder gets
full it is raised to the top snd empties
itself in turn into the other one, which
has been lowered.
This invention baa been used for a
month at the New York hospital, and it
has saved many patients and much trou
ble to nurses.
Robinson went to Washington for tbe
sole purpose of getting a patent on this
machine. He had made nothing from
his incubators and thought that it was
time to try to reap some pecuniary
benefit from his work for himself and
his family of three little children.
He filed bis application at the patent
office and was arranging to return borne
when he became very ill. Tbe doctors
said he had consumption in an advanced
stage and held out small hopes of bis
recovery.
So bis wife was called to his bedside.
But the fate of his patent and what it
means to bis family is bis one thought.

atovo Along.
The Indian's view of the way in
which he has been treated by the white
man in this country was well given in
an anecdote related by Professor Elli
oott Evans of Hamilton eollega The
famous Indian chief Red Jacket once
met Mr. Evans granduncle, Joseph El-
licott, at Tonawanda, Niagara county.
Mr. Ellicott at tbat time was agent of
the .Holland Land company, which own
ed most of the land in what was later
known as the Eighth Judicial district
M New York.
The two men shook hands and sat
down on a convenient log, both being
near the middle of it. After a short
time spent in amicable conversation.
Red Jacket said pleasantly, "Move
along, Joe."
Mr. Ellicott did as be had been re
quested, and tbe chief moved up close to
him. In a few minutes came a second
request, "Move along, Joe."
Again Mr. Ellicott complied, though
with considerable surprise, and again the
chief followed him closely. Scarcely had
this been done when Red Jacket again
said, "Move along, Joe."
Mr. Ellicott was greatly annoyed, but
willing to humor tbe chief he "moved
along" once more, this time reaching
the end of the log. '
This was not sufficient to satisfy the
chief, however, for a moment later came
the fourth request, "Move along, Joe."
"Why, man," cried the agent irrita
bly, "I can't move any farther without
getting off the log into the mndl"
"Cgb!" exclaimed Red Jacket con
temptuously. "Just so white man.
Want Indian move alpug move along.
Can't go no farther, but be fay, 'Move
along.' "
