Anniversary. A very pleasant
evening waa spent by the Knights of
l'ythiaa in this city Tueaday, the oc
casion being in commemoration of the
32nd anniversary of the order. After
lodge closed thore assembled members
and their wives and a few friends to
the number of about 30, and enjoyed
the remainder of (he evening in a
game of drivo whist. About 10 o'clock
the Knights served a lunch consisting
of coffee, sandwiches and fruit, and
endeavored in every way possible to
mako their visitors happy. Those pres

Rails to Arrive. The first con
signment of rails for the railroad from
Astoria to Qoble ia now on its way to
Astoria. The British ship Brenhilda
aailcd from Mar-sport on January 31,
and if ahe meote with no mishap will
arrive here about Juty 1st. Two more
hips are loading raila, and will soon
leave English ports. Ia all thore are
10 000 tons. Those rails are the best
railroad steel, weighing 75 pounds to
the yard. No other line in the North
west baa such a hoavy rail except the
Great Northern. Work on the ten
mile (ection from Tongne point east
has been going ahead steadily all win
ter, notwithstanding the bad weather.
There are over 800 men at work now
and more are being employed. On
Tansy point abont three miles of grade
have been completed. Contracts will
eoon be let for more grade work. The
Youngs bay bridge is being pushed to
completion, and will be iiniabed in
time to lay the railroad iron when it
arrives.

that Carl Albright had shot down his wife
In cold blood
Albright had been vary cruel to his wife
for a number of years, and his treatment
became ao bitter a waek axo that ahe left
him and Instituted divorce proceedings.
Albright did his utmost to gat her to return
and yesterday said that he would talk no
longer, but would kill ber. Today after
Mrs. Albright had returned from doing a

to ahow yon. Olatakanle cannot all be seen
during one rainy afternoon.
We learn of a very pleasant wedding that
took place at noon on Wednesday of this
week. Kobert Kent, a popular logger,
and foreman at the Baldern Marshland
camp, was united in marriage with Miss
Louisa Graham at tha residence of the
brldo'a parents, In tbe preaenoe of a large
number of relatives and friends, wbo unite
la wishing the newly married pair all the
happiness that life affords. Miss Louise Is
tha laat daughter to leave the parental roof,
and baa a boat of frieads to extend their
best wishes.

Oateri, with an expedition of 60 men and a

ture work. She can easily make 12 knots

With him are a number of the sons of
wealthy Cubana residing in the United
States. It ia anticipated tbat the vessel
will reach the north coaat of Cuba, at a
point near the Havana coast, next Sunday,
where it will be met by a detachment from
General Qorret' army and safe conveyance
given to tbe Interior of the island. With
tbe expedition are on Maxim and two
Galling guns.

Against Equal Suffbaob. After
the meeting of the McKinley republi
can club Wednesday night a very in
teresting session oi tho senate was
held. A bill was introduced for the
re-enactment of the McKinley law,
and is to take effect upon its pas
sage and approval. The woman suf
frage bill was passed to its third read
ing. The evening was most devoted
to the diaoussiou of this bill, but when
the nays and yeas were called for it
was defeated by 10 to 9, there being
a number of pairs announced. During
the discussion of the question interest
ran high, and at intervals questions of
parliamentary practices were urged
with vigor. The bill was principally
championed by the democrats and
populists, though some republicans
voted for and some democrats against
the measure. Dismission of the bill
to increase the circulating medium
1500,000,000 will probably be taken
up at the next hieeting. ' i
