Th appointment by Governor Lord
last Tuesday of Stephen A. Lowell of
Pendleton as judge of the state circuit
court to fill the vacancy caused by
the resignation of Judge Fee, will no
doubt meet with general approval.
Mr. Lowell is considered one of the
brightest young lawyers in the state.
He has resided in Oregon only about
four years and received the solid vote
of the opposition to Mr. Dolph several
times during the last session of the
legislature for United States senator.
Thi apple crop in Columbia county
thli year, according to th; Maessor a
report, is estimated at 8,285 bushels,
while in Washington county, with less
than three times the population of
Columbia the apple crop reaches 6o,
488 bushels. The total lor eleven
counties of the state Columbia,
Crook, Curry, Josephine, Lake, Linn,
Malheur, Polk, Sherman, Wasco and
Washington is 451478 bushels. Co
lumbia county produoed this year of
prunes, plwms and pears, 1,438 bushels,
which is only a Utile below the aver
age taking the state over.

If you have anything to do boys, do
It at onee. Don't sit down in a rock
hie chair and lose three-quarters of an
hoar in dreading the job. Be sure
that it will seem ten times harder than
it did at first. Keep this motto r - "Be
on time in small things as well as the
great things." Habit is everything.
The boy who is behind time at break
fast and school will be sore to get left
in the important things in life. If
you hare a chronic habit of dreading
and potting off things, make np your
mind that you will have some back
bone. Don't be a limp, jellyfish sort
of a person. Depend upon it, that life
is Tery much as you make it The
first thing to decide is what are you
going to make it. The next thing is
to talce off your coat and go to work.
Make yourself necessary somewhere.
There are thousands of boys and young
men in the world that wouldn't be
missed if they were to drop out of it
tomorrow. Don't be one of this sort.
Be a power in your own little world,
and then, depend upon it, the big
world will hear from yon.
Tbi United States is cursed with an
overproduction of politicians and rant
ing calamity piognosticators, and an
underproduction of sensible, energetic
men that go further to keep down the
first-named element than anythiog we
' can think of, says the Milton Eagle.
The above assertion is no mere fancy.
You have all beard of the man who
was placed on the operating table in
the medical labratory and bis arm
bared and pricked with a pin in the
locality of an artery, while the stern
faced surgeons anxiously watched and
commented on the gradually weaken-
. ening patient, who was with horor,
listening to watar drops from one ves
sel to another with monotonous regu
larity, and which the poor, deluded
mortal imagined was his own life
blood, of which, in reality, he bad not
lost a drop. The story relates that the
man diea a victim to an uaiiuoiuanuu
be thonght he would die from loss
of blood, and in fact did die with all
the symptoms of one with a severed
artery. The people of the United
States are very much like the man on
the operating table. They pay a set
. i
of ranting, broken-down ward politi
cians to diagnose their government
ills. A great many of these are such
as have proven utter failures In every
walk of life, and have not sufficient
good, sound intelligence to govern the
affairs of a brood of young chickens,
let aluiie the attain of a mighty nation
like the United States.
Thi unit-it of nrmrresa in anv com
munily is very often thwarted by a
certain class of people who, not be
longing to the more thrifty class, but
rather prefer to tee things pass along
in the "good old way," are joaloua of
the more progressive element, and can
ulwava tut rfatwmlod unon to throw
every obstacle in the way of improve
ments, wnetner private or jjui-hw.
Generally speaking, "this is a condi
tion and not a theory." It is a condi
tion, too, that has wrecked many a
community, whioh would have other
wise been prosperous. But worst of
all this spirit is beriditary, and instead
of passing out with the generation
