Can one wonder for a moment why stock
raisers in the Northwest ship cattle to the
Chicago aud Omaha markets, while car
loads of beef are shipped back daily for onr
consumption? The fact is, the leading
newspapers are paying no special attention
to the matter, when they should show that
something is ont of joint. Why should the
dealers at Chicago be able to pay $5. to per
hundred when the dealers at Portland can
not pay over $3 per hundred. Where would
the echo of the editorial be heard if Chicago
dealers would pay a dollar bushel
for wheat and Portland dealers would not
pay but SO cents? What the Northwest
needs mostly is a beef cannery Instead of
horse cannery.

The following Is the report of the State
Weather bureau for tne week enaing mow
day, September 2, 1895:
WESTERH OBE00H.
The smoke has continued, though for the
past three days there has been much relief
from it. The maximum temperature for
the week ranged from 64 to 86 degrees, the
hignest having Been on weonesaay ana
the lowest on Sunday. The air was more
sultry than it has been for many weeks,
and it culminated in thunder storms oil
Friday, the 30 tb, since when the tempera
ture has fallen, the sky has been overcast
and occasional sprinkles of rain has fallen.
The total rainfall has been about one-quar
ter of an inch. The current weather does
not indicate that the rainy season has com
menoed. but rather that long periods of
dry weather, for this year have now passed.
The normal rainfal for September is IM
inches in the northern counties, and one
inch in the southern counties. Periods of
warm, clear weather will yet occurr before
the regular rainy season sets in.
Crops Hop-picking is in progress. Some
picking was done the latter part of the
week, but picking will not oe general until
the middle of the present week. The cor
respondents report the hops to he in good
condition. The smoky weather prevented
the sun's rays from injuring the arms to
ni la re extent. The burrs are well
formed, some being three inches long. Lice
are in many yards, but as a rule ne great
damage has been aone to tne nops.
The rains have caused some prunes to
split open, but no material damage appears
to have been done. Prune-drying is in pro.
trresn in all sections. Warm, dry weather
would be more favorable to the fruiUdrying
operation.
Peaches and Bartlctt pears are ripening
rapidly. The rain has been beneficial to
corn. The potato crop has been injured
by the long, dry period, but the late pota
toes will be improved by the rains. Pas
tures are somewhut improved hy the rains,
thoneh the effect on the diiirying interests
is not yet especially noticahle. ,
