CL.ATSKANIB COMMENTS.

Notwithstanding the bard timet
earned by free trade agitation, people
who come here from other countries
are loth to return to their old homer,
ays the MoMinnville Reporter. When
the World't Columbian Exposition was
held the provisions of the alien con
tract labor law were suspended until
one year after the cloee of the expo
ition, ao far ai the employes of tbe
various exhibitor were concerned.
At tbe bx pi ration of that time persons
of the clasa named who did Dot volun
tarily return to their own countries
were made aubject to all the processes
and penalties applicable to aliens com
ing In open violation of the law. Con
gresa made no provision for the en
forcement of thia epecUl law, and it is
practically a dead letter. Three fourth
of the peraona who came in 1892 are
till in the country, and propose to
remain because they consider it tbe
best country on earth ia which to
make a living.
Fsoat reading the Grant Pas Ob
server one would naturally believe the
whole of Southern Oregon i a bed of
gold. There 1 little room for doubt,
however, that Southern Oregon is rich
in mineral resources, and that the vi
cinity of Grants Pass is an especially
favored spot is undisputed. Mining
in Southern Oregon is all done by the
hydraulic process, and in localities
where water can be bad a good profit
' is realised by those engaged in the
business. Tbe soil is said to all be
mixed with gold, ao that it makes
little difference where tbe water ia
turned on. .
A xumbek of Pendleton men who
are blessed with wives, Bays tbe Trib'
tine, have made arrangements to pro
cure what is known as a "special It'
cense for traveling." It reads : "This
ia to certify that mv husband may,
with ray free and full consent, drink
as much as he likes, and enjoy the so
ciety of any lady while away from
home. I want him to enjoy life while
ha lives, aa he will be a long time dead.

The report of an explosion heard about
s:3t o ciot-K in our city last Saturday even
ing excited no particular interest until less
than an hour later Mrs. R. A. Llllach, who
had left here for her home, on horseback,
returned and excitedly told that tbe fine
residence of James Fisk about two niilea
out had been blown to pieces, and she
thought she saw part of the mangled re
mains of a human being lvinz near. The
news spread very fast, and men, women
and shil iren started at once for the scene
of the accident. Arriving there the storv
was found to be true, and tbe remains of
tbe hnu-e were on fire, while fragments
were scattered about in evary direction.
I'arts of a man's body were found about
the scene of the explosion, but not enough
to identify the bo iy exoept by fragments
of clothing, and these indicated that tbe
body was that of James Fisk himself. It
was known that there had been a Quantity
of giant and Jud-on powder about tbe
premises used in blowing up stomps, and
it is supposed that some of this which was
known tn be stared in an outhouse near
the dwelling and possibly in it caused the
explosion, whemer tne result ol accident
or design is nut known. Night coming on
a guard was placed over what pieces of
body could he round, a coroner a jury was
selected by the justice of the pesce to meet
oiouuav uiiruui. aim people WHO DIU
gathered from all directions returned to
iheir homes. On Snndav search was made
for additional parts of the body, but there
was not a great deal more found as the
standing grass made it difficult to find any
thing. What remains con id be found were
taken to the residence of O.J. Brvant from
where ihey were bailed on Monday after
noon in tbe Bryant cemetery. Tne coro
ner's jury spent Monday in hearing whnt
testimony could be secured to throw light
upon the sad occurrence but had not con
cluded their investigation at this writing.

CROPS AND WEATHER.
Following is the report of the State
Wt-atbt-r Bureau for the week ending on
Monuay. July e. ,
WESTERN OREGON.
Weather Showers occurred on the 3rd.
4th and nth of July, being heaviest on the
4th; the total vainlail was from 0 10 IvO.io
oi an men. Jhe temperature waa much
cooler than the preceding week: the man
mum ranged from Hi t 80 degrees, the
minimum fmn 4'i to 63 decrees. Tbe
weather was cloudy to partly cloudr and
cool up to i-unday; Sunday and Monday
were clear ana arin.
Crops The weather was exceedingly
lavoranie to tut growtn or vegetation.
Previous warm and dry wealher had dried
the surface soil considerably, hence ibe
rain was beneficial. The r.iin did very
slight damage to hay which was down.
Haying has progressed during the past
week. Hay from grain is being made this
week. The second cron of alfalfa will be
cut by the 15th.
Barley is riienlne and will soon be ready
to cut. Bv the 16th fall sown wheat will
begin to ba harvested in the ou.hern coun
ties. The encouraging reports aa to the
wheat, barley and oats continue.
Along tne Immediate coast vegetation
was never better; the hay crop ia especially
heavy, and potatoes promise a heavy crop.
so lar as tne bay and grain crops are coil'
cerned. Western Oregon promises to
eclipse her former yields.
The fruit prospects continue to be of the
most encotir.iging character, its rain on
the 4th did damage to Royal Ann cherries,
but the damage was alight. Peaches are
ripening in Jackson and Josephinecountiea.
and they will be a la'ge crop. Pears, ap
ples and prunes promise their Usual large
crop.
This Is now the season of the vear when
rain seldom fulls: hence it is hardly proba
ble that any rain will occur this year at
tbia season of the year. The temperature
will most likely materially decrease on
Wednesday and Thursday with high fog or
cloudy 1 biirsday to noon. No rain is ex
pected to occur wbeu the change in tem
perature occurs.
