Thi Orbuok Blub Book. Mr. II.
O. Mathiea, of Portland, publisher of
'The Oregon Blue Book," has our
thanka for a copy of that vnluablo en
cyclopedia of information. The work
is illustrated throughout, containing
splendid portraits and biographical
sketches of the members of the late
legislature, slate officers and United
States senators. The book as one for
reference) is of Inestimable value to
persons interested in publio and es
pecially political affairs, and reflects
credit upon its author.
Btbuok it Rich. A report from
Union says: "Last Thursday night a
large oave took place on Slurgil bar,
where Captain Robin ett waa in charge
of the notsle, and an examination
showed nuggets of all ahapea and sites.
The workmen quickly picked up $14,
600 in gold, in dinner paila, and many
thousands of dollars more are actually
in eight. Everybody In this section is
dow looking for nigh bars and coarse
gold channels on Snake river, and the
moat intense eioitement prevails
among the prospectors."
A COLUMBU-KIVKK Hatchirt.
There is to be a salmon hatchery some
whereon the Columbia or one of its
brandies this season. Mr. McOuiro
lias been soliciting subscriptions lor
this purpose, and has reoeived some
$2000, but be is thrown in the shade
by the cannery men. Mr. J. O. Man
thorn says the eannerymen have
quietly put up$7000 toward a hatchery.
The dam in the Clackamaa baa spoiled
the hatchery business there. The
owner offers to allow Mr. McGuire to
put a flsh ladder in at a place where
it would be no good if he gives bonds
that it will do no harm. Just where
the new hatchery ia to be located baa
not been decided.
Csmm LblTgL'H- Mamgg The city
V. 1 council held an adjourned meeting
Nt Tuesday night, at which time the con-
tract was awarded to John Ullmore lor
- ' furnishing; the oil and lighting the
street lamps for a period of one year
fr 1117.50, his being the lowest bid
submitted. The ordinance committee
and oily recorder were authorised to
draw up and report a fee bill at the
next meeting
providing legal fees to
be charged by the marshal and record-
rr in periormwg meir onioiai noun.
The question of supplying the oity
with better water waa taken op and
Mr. Orchard was given until next
Monday night to submit a proposition
to bring water from Perry creek.
Tui CodrtDi&Rioht. The county
court very wisely rejected the claim ot
Mary Pringls for $500 damages, al
leged to have been done an orchard
by fire. Tbe claimant alleged that
the road supervisor in his offloial ca
pacity, bad set out Ore which destroyed
a part of the orchard belonging to
said claimant. The bill has been pend
ing bufore tbe county court for sever
al terms and continued each time.
Last week the commissioners made a
personal investigation of the matter,
and were convinced that the damage
done did not exceed $25 ; that tbe
Jnunl la tint lifthia 9m laid dimSM!
and Wlv and finally, that the road
-' .. . . ' ... .. .. .
destroyed the
trees, hencs the claim
was rejected.
jrm p - a WsiiHSj Mnsars Oroh-
srd 4s Jones, proprietors of the St. Hel
ens water works, are making estimates
on a proposition to enlarge the water
riant of this city by putting in a grav
ity system ana cringing- water irom
Terry oreek, about two and one-half
miles from town. Tbe proposition is
onlv considered by these gentlemen in
anticipation of also making satisfac
tory terms with the people of Houlton
fur supplying that town with the same
system. Bt. Helens can afford to pay
liberally for this water, which we be
lieve would be conducive of better
health and furnish water far more pal
atable. If these necessary arrange
ments can be made it is the intention
fo build another tank larger than the
one now used, with an Increased preaS'
lire for fire purposes. -
A Little Pxcmatur. The Clata-
kanie Chief man censures School Su
perintendent Watts beoause that gen
tleman does not act in the capacity of
apecial correspondent for his paper,
with special reference to the late
school apportionment, and says all the
papers in the county would be glad
to publiHh those things free oi charge
if the county officers would supply
them with copy. The Mibt has been
publishing these things free oi charge
for twelve years, and f urniebfd its own
copy taken from the reoords. The
Chief also praises Mr. Weed for send
ing that paper a copy of the court
proceedings, and threatens political
Hiiihilation to the offioer who does
jiot "stand in" with his royal Ohiefship.
We presume tbe county clerk has
perfect right to act as correspondent
fur tbe Chief or any other paper if he
dusires to do so. Brother, you are a
little premature in your censure of
Mr. Watts. That gentleman had noth
ing to do with the school apportion
ment appearing in these columns. If
supervisor did not set out me nre tnatsvme, is running witn a crew oi aooui.
