Cooper. The only changes made in
the ticket ae nominated at the caucus
previously held was that D. 3. Bwilier,

Mr. Dillard having previously declined
to be a candidate.
SlTXDAY SCHOOL CoKVBimo. The
atate Sunday school convention will be
held in Portland on May 7th, 8th and
9th. Thia will be the 10th annual
meeting of the atate association and is
expected to exceed all former meet
inga in point of attendance. Alt the
tonics known to Sunday school work
will be discussed by the loading pro
feasors of the slate. The conventions
will bo held in the new First Congre
gational church, corner Park and Mad
ison streets. All necessary arrange
meota for the entertainment of dele
gates are being perfected, and large
attendance is desired.

Ever since they crossed the state line

pany carried them to Salem and held
their baggage aa aeourity for passage,
while the hotel company and Prof.
Tibketts held second 0. O. D. claim
on their paraphernalia. It Is quite a
good uompany and they deserve being

It appears from the Hillsboro Indepen
dent that the Sooth Tualatin creamery
ia doing a good business and is prov
ing a great thing for the farmers of
that section. Thia creamery for the
month of February, made and mar
keted 6155 pounds of butter and sup
plied only two thirds of the orders
plaoed with the Portland agent. To
make one pound of butter 21.29 pounds
of milk were required. From one
pound of butler fat 124 ponnds were
made. The net value of the butter
fat for the month was 25.64 cents per
pound. Tho milk netted the dairy
man $1 per hundred weight.

with the family of Sheriff Doan. Jus
tice Doan came to Oregon a good many
years sgo. He was born in Cheater
county. Pa., not far from Philadelphia.

an apprenticeship at the carpenter
trade, working the first year for $5 per
week, the reennd year for for f 7, and
the last vear for 99. Then at the age
of 17 he entered the Union army, and
served three years, at the end of which
time he was discharged for disability,
his sickness, however, being of short
duration, he waa married before his
Zlat birthday waa reached. Mr. Uoan
has a aon 32 years old, and four grand
children. To serve an apprenticeship
al the carpenter's trade, three years in
the civil war and afterwards get mar
ried before he ia 21 yeara old ia a pretty
good record. Mr. and Mra. Doan are
each enjoying splendid health, and do
not look to be more inan to.

near wrecking the bridge. When the
bridle waa built the piors were set on
top of the solid rock bed of the oreek,
without any support to hold them in
place except the weight of the bridge,
and wholly unprotected from the great
jams of sawlots which shoot the rapids
at that plaoe. A crib is being made of
Urge logs which is to be filled with
rock and sunk in the creek to protect
the east end piers fioui further damage.

Dr. II. II. Cliff and Dr. A. P. McLaren.
of this county, and Dr. A, L Fulton,
of Astoria, and we are glad to leurn
they passed a salislaotory examine
tion. The now law is a commendable
one and ahould be enforced.
Sbhious Accident. Last Friday
while three children Anna George,
Agnes Mnckle and Ernest Johns-
were playing in the hay loitoiMr.
James Muckle'a barn, the two older
ones, Anna and Agnee, ran sway to
hide from Ernest. They ran over to
one aide and not noticing or perhaps
thinking, stepped into the manger
opening which was partially covered
witb hay, and leu througn ii, a ins
tance of several feet to the floor below.
Anna George struck the manger front
with the small of bar back which ren
dered her onoonacious for several
minutes, and for time her lite was
despaired of. Agnes Muokle, though
suffering from very badly sprained
ankle, gave the alarm and not until
Dr. Chalmers arrived eome time after
did Anna George regain consciousness.
The two unfortunate children are now
alowly improving.
Washington Taxbb. Under the law
lately passed by the Washington legis
lature saeMments will only be made
on alternate years the value to be
estimated on the first day of April of
odd numbered years. The penally lor
delinquency In payment of taxes is re
duced to 2 per cent, and the interest
placed at 12 per cent per annum, witu
the proviso that if one-half the tax be
paid on the Slat day of May, then the
remaining half may be paid on Novem
ber 30th. following, but if said remain
ing half is not paid on or before that
date, then auch balance shall be sub
ject to penally and interest from the
Slst day of May preceding unm pain.
The delinquent taxeaof 1892 and 1893
may be paid on or before July 1st, 1895,
wivh a rebate oi penalty ana miereiv,
which amounts to 45 per cent of taxes
of 1892, and 25 per cent on those oi
the succeeding year.
Stricebn with Pabaiybu. Post
master Ben Holmes, of Kalama, was
stricken with paralysis on the street,
near bia residence, last Friday even-
ine- about 7 :30 o'clock. He had beon
complaining of beiug unwell, but after
orosing the office that evening, walked
to within ball a block oi his residence.
Ha ainnned to sneak to 1 neighbor's
little girl, and while in the act of do
ing so, fell heavily to the walk, strik
ing his bead on the fence, Injuring the
skull so badly thai his physician fears
concussion of Ihe brain. He is appar
ently paralysed on the left side and
partially on tne rigni. e is unuw
to speak but can move bis right hand.
Mr. Holmes served aa sheriff of Cow
lits county for three terms, and ia well
known and generally esteemea. iast

In the fall of 1893 a aon of Mr. T. A.
McFarland, a prominent merchant of
Live Oak, Sutter, Co., Cat., was taken
with a very heavy cold. The pains
in his chest were so severe that he had
spasms and was threatened with pneu
monia, ilia latnor gave mm several

Lindloy Meeker was on Wednesday
appointed administrator of the estate

Dr. E. T. Cams, dentist, of Portland,
will visit Rainier April 10th, without

The Gillton Republican club will
hold a meeting thia (Friday) evening

attend the meeting of the state club,

ent that the sheriff will have to make
another trip to Salem soon.
J. T. Hayne, who was elected school

Mr. Young, who lives on Soappoose

but a sharp knife and the clear con
