Your committee have made a very careful exami
nation of the ROYAL BAKING POWDER,
and are satisfied that it fulfils all the requirements
which the public can make of a baking powder.
For purity and care in preparation it equals any
in the market, and
Our test shows that it has greater
leavening power than any other
of which we have any knowledge.

of fearlessness contributed largely to
the lore and esteem in which he was

and indeed the report was current that

Nothing conld be more contrary to the

ConipUniwiuaoi Herr Ivxupp.
According to an interesting rumor, our
esteemed friend, Herr Krupp, intends
giving that mammoth shooting iron now
at Jackson park to Chicago with his
compliments. If this is so. then Herr
Krapp has our best thanks and all the
courtesies that are to be had in such au
ineffably bad season of weather. The
gun weishs S70.000 pounds and over,
and as it cost ff-0,000 to make it Herr
Krnpp's testimonial would involve some
iittle expense.
But really we are not at all sure we
know what to do with the weapon. The
city has no marine defense to sustain.
and a couple of trusty derringers tn om-
cial hands are the only weapons needed
in clearing out offensive bumboats. It
costs4l.200 to shoot the thing, and that
is quite a tidy sum to pay for the pnv-
ilege of bowling over targets placed out
in the midwaters of Lake Michigan.
And when it went off we greatly fear
that some of Mr. O'Neill "inspected
hotels in the neighborhood would draw
themselves up and drop into dust heaps.
Besides, the thing would have to have a
fort to be boused in And having one
fort we should need to have two to be
really thoroughly equipped. Having
these, we'd want more guns, and more
marines, uml more gunpowder. And
then with all these, what use would they
be unless we got np a war just to have
everything in keeping?
Still, it's a great gnn and an influen
tial discourager of inimical advances.
If we must take it. Herr Krupp has our
thanks. Chicago Record.
It Cure Cancer.
Some years ago the state department
at Washington received through the
minister . of Ecuador to the United
States specimeus of a plant known as
condnrango, found in the province of
Loya, in Ecnador, to which marvelous
qualities in curing cancer were ascribed.
The physicians in South America expert'
mented on this snbetanco and reported
most wonderful cures. Its virtues are
said to have been discovered by accident
An Indian had been suffering fearfully
for a long time from internal cancer,
and his wife undertook to relieve him
by shortening his life by poison. For
this purpose she selected the enndnran
go, making a decoction of the bark. To
her astonishment the first dose appeared
to benefit the patient, and by the con
tinuance of this remedy he was com'

Coat or Electric Cooking.
It has been shown by recent experi
ments that there is practically no differ'
ance in cost between cooking by elec
tricity and by coal, while the advan-
tages of the former method in point oi
comfort, cleanliness and safety are con
siderable. Of every 100 tons of coal
burned in an ordinary cooking stove 96
tons are, it is said, practically wasted,
whereas with electricity the expense is
not so much on the fuel as on labor and
interest on machinery. Invention.
A Bottle Stopper.
If yon want a stopper for a bottle of
old or any substance that would natu-
rally call for a glass stopper because of
the danger that the cork would be eaten
up by the contents of the bottle, take
the cork and stcp it in vaseline. It
will then be impervious to acids of any
kind, and no action of chemicals will
decay it. It will, in fact, be as good for
all purposes as a glass stopper. New

A pleasant feature of the advertising
put forth by the Royal Baking Powder
Company, frequently commented upon
by tonsnmers, is the absolute confidents
that may be bad in the truthfulness of
all its claims and statements. There is
evidently the same care and accuracy in
the framing of the Royal advertisements
tlit t there is in the compounding of the
Royal Powder.
It appears, nn fortunately, that not all
baking powder proplx are so scrupulous
ly careful. The recent letter from the
Judge of Awards on Baking Powders at
the Chicago World's Fair, exposing the
falsity of the claim of another house
that its baking powder had received the
highest award for strength, purity, ex
cellence, etc., is a scathing rebuke to
those manufacturers of inferior baking
powders who have no regard for the
truth, but habitually seek, in their pub
lic announcements, to deceive consum
ers. The Judge of Awards states that
no such award was given to the concern
in question, and has notified it that it
must cease publishing his name in con
nwtlpn with it fait statements.

A Preposterous Objection.
In certain district in Derbyshire a
Methodist lady is a candidate for the
board of guardians. We are greatly sur
prised to learn that some objection has
been offered to her candidature on the
ground that, while personally eminently
suitable for the position, there is no need
to have a lady on the board of guardians.
That argument fairly takes our breath
away, surely those who use it have for
gotten that the great majority of paupers
are women and children. Does anybody
seriously argue at this time of day that a
pack of men arc the mont suitable per
sons to make arrangements for women
and children?
As a matter of fact, we could, if neces
sary, mention most ridiculous incidents
that have occurred when unhappy boards
of guardians have bad to deal with femi
nine and infantile questions. No, no!
Let us admit the superiority of man in
his own sphere, but when it comes to
feeding, clothing and otherwise minis
tering to women and children man is de
cidedly out of it. If there is any public
body in the land of which women ought
to be members, it is the board of guard
ians, London Methodist Times.

Culture East and Waal,
"New England people are opt to con

at the LindelL "For my part, however,
I believe that western people are about
as good readers as can be found in
week's journey. Certainly the western
farmer thinks more of his newsaper
than the man who trie to earn a living
by tilling the less fertile sou in the east.
The worst place I ever struck for news
papers was a little town in New Jersey
within two hours ride of Now York,
tried in every store to buy or borrow
paper while there, but could secure noth
ing, and no one seemed surprised at the
utter absence of current literature.
What little was known of current polit
ical and national events was almost en
tirely gained by hearsay, and it is need
less to add the people were about two
weeks behind the times in consequence.
You could hardly find a frontier farm so
far behind the tunes in tins respect as this

a city. The east is very apt to poke fun
at tho west, but honors are quite easy in
many respects." tt. Louis QIobe-Demo-

Alcohol and Hplrlta of Wina.
The term spiritof wine, orardentspirit.
was not in use in the thirteenth century,
for the word spirit was at that time re-
.serveil for volatile agents like mercury,
sulphur, the sulphureta of arsenic and
sal ammoniac, which were capable of
acting on metals and modifying their
color and properties. The term eau de
vie was given in the thirteenth and four
teenth centuries to the elixir of long life
It was Arnaud de Villeneuve who em
ployed it for the first time to designate
the product of the distillation of wine.
But be used it not as a specific name,
but in order to mark the assimilation
which he made of it with the product
drawn from wine. The elixir of long
life of the ancient alchemists had noth
ing in common with our alcohol. Con
fusion of the two has led the historian)
of science into more than one error. P.

Why? Because they find that while
