The republicans in the legislature
shook! not go into caucus for United
States senator. Such a proceeding
cannot help but defeat the will of the
majority. The friends of Mr. Dolph
are urging a caucus, the reason for
which is apparent to everybody.
The nest legislature will be called
upon to do something to protect the
sturgeon of the Columbia river. Many
people will be surprised to learn that
there is no close- season for aturgeoo,
nor any law whatever, on our statute
books governing the catch of that var
iety of fish. At the present ratio of
destruction it is only a question nf
time when the supply of sturgeon will
be exhausted. Two years ago the sup
ply was about double what it was last
year, and this year it baa still dwin
dled down. The price in the mean
time, however, has increased from 14
cents to si cents; still the fishermen
but 24,-1 cannot make as much money as they
is the did two years ago. Those best so
quainted with the industry say that
there should be a close season lasting
during the entire summer, and that
no sturgeon less than thirty pounds
weight should be caught. If properly
protected this will become one of the
principal sources of revenue of the
river counties. Let the legislature do
its duty towards this industry. K

Bwce the county court and city

Ode people may look forward to a
marked revival of business with the
opening of spring. In addition to the
increase of business in a general way.
the commencement of work on the
Astoria railroad, which seems now a
sure thing, will, in our opinion, bring
about a return of prosperity to Colum
bia county. The building of the road
'ill furnish employment to a farce
number of people and thereby create
S demand for farm products, which
will benefit the producer as well
the consumer. Not only this; but
short switches or spurs will be bnil'

for the purpose of fretting out sawloga,

The Astoria railroad seems to be an
assured fact from the tone of the con
tract signed last Saturday, which will
be found in another column of this
paper. The Mist bas alwaya claimed
that tba first road built into Astoria
would follow down the banks of the
Columbia, and that prediction seems
likely to come true before tbe end of
1895. The Goble road will not neces
sarily retard tbe efforts beiug made
for S road down the Nehalem valley,
because neither wiH answer the pur
pose of the other . Each would have
separate trans-continental connection,
, but could hardly be called competi
tors. The Goble road would be the
means of stimulating and building np
tbs river front, make a demand for la
bor,. and open r.p a market for our
products at Astoria, Jby making it a
city, which bas not heretofore existed.
People aloog the proposed route should
do everything possible to secure tbe
