been but one crop failure there in the
laat eight years, and this year the
crop Is enormous.

Jack Volens, of Bcapponee, had an
nn pleasant experience with a couple
of foot-pads near the Scappoose bridge
Monday evening. Volens had been
to Bt. Helens during the day where he
sold some county warrants and started
home. In the neighborhood ol the
bridge be waa overtaken by two tramps
who "rolled him and took all hu
money and other Valuables except a
bottle of whiskey which they evidently
did not think worth taking aa it con
tained leva than one "linger" at the
bottom. When seen a few minutes
later in Weal's lane, he waa on hia
way to tbe atation to repleniah his
slock of liquids and recite bis hard
luck to symatbelio frienda.

We are informed that repreeetativea of
certain eastern capitalists have offered
to deposit 125,000 with the subsidy
company as a guarantee that within
thirty days they will begin construct
ion of the road With a cash capital of
$800,000 which amount ia to be depos
ited in the Astoria baoka on or before
the expiration of the thirty days, and
if thev fail so to do. tliey lorii it toe
