A Busy Town.-Rainier haa been
one of the busiest town on the river.
of late. In addition to the already
large trade there in cord wood, shingles,
snd gsoeral merchandise, there haa
been paid oat there of late about $1600
week for salmon which haa bean
shipped to tho down river canneries.
This my not teem very large but it
i aotual oath and all remains at home,
a those engaged in fishing spend
tbslr money, as a rule, with the local
merchants. Tbs amount of money
handled in Rainier, buying fish, alone,
greatly stimulates trade and inoreaeea
tbe commerce of lha town in many
ways. Wa bava been informed that
a large amount of salmon now being
put up is to fill contracts for China
and Japan.
Loos LooKiRO Up. Ixcs are com
manding a muoh better price Just now
than for many montha past. Quality,
of course, cut soma figure, but the
general tendency la upward. Mr.
Wieat, of Stella, Waab., sold a large
raft In Portland Monday for It par
thousand, and contracted tho nest lot
at I4.50. Tbia is the price for first-class
saw timber. , Tbe reason for tba in
creased price and increased demand
i that there hae been very few logs
put in tbe past yeai and tbe supply is
almost exhausted. Consequently,
mill that have large order to fill are
contracting at an advanced price.
Under xlstinr condition the supply
of log would in a comparatively short
time become exhauated, nance tne
advance in the prior will, have a tend
ancy to stimulate loggers, snd It
would not bs surprising to near oi
many camps starting up vary soon.

Proposed tJaloa Paolfle Connection
by the Nebalem Valley Aoate.
A rticlss of Incorporation of the Oolnmhls
A Eastern Railroad Company were filed
with th county clerk of Multnomah
auuatjr Tuesday aftarnoon by Ouionai R.
w. Hltchsll, Hsarjr C. Orady sad 0. W.
Johnson. Tba capital stock U placed at
1900,000, divided Into 1)000 sharsa ef 8100
each.
Th company proposes to construct a
railroad from a point tn Clateep county, at
or near tba laoutb of tba Columbia river.
through tha valley of tba NehsUm, then
throuifh OJumbia. Woihlngton, Multno
mah, Clackamas, Marlon, Linn, Harnay,
and Creok counties, to a point near the
Hnak river at Ontario, er nsar Owyhee.
II practicable, the oompany will purchase
tbe Astoria A South Coast railroad, run
nlng from Young's bay to 8eanlile, and con
nect It with tha proposed Una. Branch
lines will b built wherever and whenever
necessity demands. Tba oompspy will
also engage In tha manufacture of lumber,
quarrying of rock, mining of coal, and In
tha opsrstton af ferries.
Tha proposed Una will pass through a
rich country, especially from Astoria to
Portland, as undrvelop I coal mines are
everywhere In th Kehalem valley. This
sell ems embodies tbe plans of tha 8c Uo-
neld Una from Portland to Astoria, on
which soma grading was dona In 1802. It
Is sntlrely different In It featurea from the
Una which tba Union Paclflo Intended to
build. Tha latter, a company com
posed of R. W. Baxter and tha Union
Pact Bo offldal Intended to build,
was practically a consolidation of all in
terests, it being proposed to give Astoria
rail connection with Portland by a connec
tion with the Northern Paclflo at Gobi,
and to tap tha Nebalem by branch lines.
go rue railroad men claimed that this
schema would not be a profitable one as
tba company could not meet river compe
tition. They advocated a Una through tha
NehsUm valley such as tbe new company
intends to build, wltb extensions In other
directions.
From tbe article of incorporation, It
would appear that tha new company Is in
corporated for tba object of building a line
to a connection wltb the union racinc.
which would give that company eommut-
eation with Portland and the sea Indepen
dent of tbe Oregon Railway and Navigation
Oompany. Aa proposed, tba Una will run
directly from Astoria to Ontario, a town In
Malhaer county, located oa tba line of ine
Union Pactflo. 40 miles from Huntington,
where the Union terminate. It remains
to ba seen whether tha road is to be built
for that purpose. Son.

A visitor at the penlti-rtlary tbe other
day, eays th Ralam Statesman, waa sur
prised to see aixty-fonr prisoners stand np
to be photographed atona time. That lot
mesne lust so many comparatively new ar
rivals, because the pictures are taken as
soon after their arrival there as there are
enongb to pay T. O. Hutchinson of Dallas,
who haa tile contract for tbe Jo. to come
over and take them. They are taken to ba
placed la tha "roeue's gallery." Thla
bring to mind a little tauie talk wntcn
took place at a dinner among the officer
at tha prison and a few gu' sts recently,
and which came to tha reporter from an
entire stranger to tba scene who overheard
it repeated an a train privately. Governor
Pennoyer was ana of tbe guests and an
other waa a man suffloiently connected with
newspapers to be sue pec ted of having given
his excellency an occasional prod for his
pardoning penchant. Tbe talk turned right
for tbe newspaper man to aay solemnly:
"Well, I see the penitentiary ia filling np
vary rapidly, Mr. DownlngT" "Yes," In
terjected tbe governor, with pis pecuuar
look and smile, "In spite of tha governor's
excessive pardoning habit.'" Tbe moral
ising went on as tf nothing bad bean said
Another fact about tbe penitentiary not
cenerally suspected Is that it ia recognised
hv tramna aa lha most reliable depot of
supplies in ths way of cast-off clothing, and
a great many call there to gat warm gar
ment for the winter.
