through Hi. Helena about ten diyi
ago. met with no little difficulty on
their Journey toward Nchnlem.
When they reached Bunker hill one
wagon broke down and the party
camped there until tbe vehicle could
be brought back to 8L Helen for re
peirs, which waa done last Keturdey.
The mad between this place and Pitts
burg I said to be very rjugh, and to
those familiar with It no surprise was
expressed when it waa learned the
party were having diffleully.

frost occured. The precipitation was
greatly excessive in the coast and
southern counties, and normal in the
Willamette valley.
Chops: Hop picking is the work
whioh I. demanding attention in all
hep growing section. Picker are
scares, which fact ha induced the
grower to demaude of labor for in
creased -compensation per box. All
available person are being pressed
into service and some have neglected
their grain to give their attention to
hop picking. As to tbe amount of
produot, quality of crop and injury by
lice and mold, the opinioua differ
much In sections. A report from
Marion county states that hop picking
i about tbroogb, a better yield is re
ported then anticipated and that the
product is only slightly injured by lice
snd mold. Clean picking has been
Ihe rule In Marion county. A corres
pondent from Carlton, Yamhill
county, states that progress has been
made in the hop yards, the crop is
fairly good and beinir secured in ex
cellent condition. A Clackamas cor-
respendent-states that tbe crop is fair
only, quality poor and many yards
have been left untouched owing to
the mold. Showers retarded picking
only in a few section. With except
ion of a few oats standing in Clacka
mas county and some wheat unthresh-
ed in the same county, harveiting and
threshing ii completed. Farmer nave
nearly finished hauling off their wheat
so that no damage can result from the
inclemencies of the weather. . The
yield of potatoee will be light and
onions will be plentiful. Pasture
bave much Improved by the showers
of late; as a consequence a corres
ponding improvement is noticed iu
the condition of live stock. In Linn
county seeding or summer-fallow baa
commenced ; in other sections rain is
desired before the soil will be ready
for tbe plow. The prices offered are
lower than has ever been known, but
grain is weighing unususlly heavy
Silver prunea in Douglas county have
been injured by the rains; otner vege
tables are doing welt and are abundant.
Fruit shipments continue large
through tne rapid ripening of late
fruit.

Shot for a Pheasant.
Monday evening about sundown, as
Djck Marshal was riding horseback,
to hi home about five mile below
Engene on the river road, he was hit
by a couple of stray bird shot from a
gun in the hands of George Saunders,
a young man about twenty year of
age, who wa (hooting at a pheasant.
Dr. McKeuney was culled and ex
tracted one shot from Marshal's back.
The other shot struck an eye and
lodged under the nose, probably de
stroying the eyuiight of one eye. Dr.
McKeuuev did not deem it advisable
lo take out the second shot. Marshal's
horse wag peppered with shot, at least
forty being picked out of hin hide.
