the railroad wee charged up with them.

day of laat week aa tha ateamer Baker
waa attempting to paa through the
llurnelde-slreet bridge In Portland, tha

time to peat and caught tha smoke
aiack and kingpost, carrying both
way and otherwise damaging the
boat. Tba steamer Hasaalo waa soon
brought Into service and proceeded on
tha trip with tha cargo ol tba disabled
steamer.

cants to as many dollars, but no very
rich ledge bee yet been located. There
re, it ia claimed, no less than 300 men
t tha present time prospecting in the
Lewie river country far op towards the
bead waters. There ia little doubt but
that enuntrv abounds with the preci
one metal, but to looale it in paying
quantities ia tha pussier.

given last Sunday from Portland to

The steamer Clly of Fraukfort
brought the crowd which at once re
paired to the park, and after luncheon

It was Indeed surprising to besr a
man of O. 0. Hohnan's eduoational
attainments using such an amount of
slang phrases, though which greatly
amused tha audience. At about 6
o'clock the party left for Portland, all
seemingly satisfied with their trip.
Mary Sandbars. The steamer
Mssoot has been laying over night nt
Caples this week on neennnt of the
immense amount of aand filling in at
the mouth ot Lewis river. The
steamer will not be able to get into
the mouth of Lewis river until the
river raiaea sufficiently to cut out a
channel into the Columbia. The wa
ter is also too low lo navigate Bache
lor slough, and instead of making the
out-off into Lake river, she comes to
the moutb and ascendi returning the
same way. The Kellogg ia also hav
ing difficulty getting into the Cowlits.
One day last week ene was compelled
to wait for the tide to raise before the
could get out. All the various small
streams and inlets along the river are
in about the same condition, the hign
wsier having left their "mouths piled
full of aand."

George J. Aainaworth and family, of
Redoudo Beach. California, apent last
Tuesdsy night in Bt. Helens on their
way to the Nehslem valley where
they expect to rusticate for some time,
bis physician having prescribed this
trip for Captain Ainawortb'a health.
Tha party brought with them full
camp equipage, several vebiclea and a
number of servants, and are fully pre
oared to enior camp life. Captain
Ainswoth waa at one time commander
of the Welcome, plying between Port
land and Ealama. He le a eon ol
Csntaio J. C. Ainaworth, deceased,
who waa proprietor of the Ainaworth
National Bank and one ol the princi
nal stockholders in the Oregon Rail
way & Navigation Company. Captain
Ainaworth is now operating a large
summer resort hotel at Redondo
Beach, Calilornia.
