SHOULD BUILD TBS ROAD.
While wo hare no desire to dictate in
the premises, yet feeling an Interest
in common, at least, with every good
citizen of the county in road matters
we claim the right to expreaa fto opin

In referring to the proceedings of
the road meeting held at Vernonia

diversity of opinion regarding the
kind of road, the route and plan of
procedure to obtain the desired result
While all of the propositions, if carried
out, would be good, the question that
should be moat seriously considered is
the one which, other things being
equal, could be carried forward to a
successful termination, with view
always to good results ' with the least
money. Then again harmony of sen

Washikoton, Aug. 21. A strong
report favoring the rigid exclusion and
deportation of alien anarchists has
been made by the committee on ju
diciary. The report savst "It is ad'
mined on all hands the question is
one of very great importance and that
legislation on the subject is called for
by every considenttiou of pubiio safely
The committee advises that owing to
the severe legislation recently adopted
by France and Italy, a great many
dangerous anarchist are making their
way to the United Btates, and as uu
der existing laws they cannot be de
nied admission to our territory, the
United State will soon be the remlex
voua ot these human monsters unless
the prop.sed legislation is speedily
adopted.
"Your committee is ot the opinion
the United States is fully justified by
the existing conditions in using all its
power to prevent the immigration and
settlement in this country ot men who
repudiate all law, all government and
practically proclaim themselves ene
mies of mankind.
"Your committee has no disposition
to hamper the rigorous and prompt
exeoution of all laws providing for the
exclusion and deportation of these
classes by unnecessary proceedings
and delays, and is now willing to con
cede that the superintendent of Immi
gration and the secretary of the treas
ury may be fully trusted to confine
the operation of the law to those justly

Committed Suicide.
Cottaok Gbovb, Or., Aug, SO. Lane
Bhortridge, aged twenty-three years.
was found this morning just inside the
door of Hebron church, eight miles
from here, with a ballet hole through
his head. It is supposed he had been
Iving there since 10 o'clouk last night.
His condition is very uncertain. The
ball entered trie right temple and
lodged in the upper part of the left
jaw. It is reported that Short ridge
was deeply in love with a certain Miss
Powell, and had asked her to marry
him. Being refused, he determined
to kill himself. Yesterday he came
to a drug store and wanted to obtain
laudanum for his mother, as she was
suffering severely with the toothache.
It seems Sliorlridge first tried to take
his life with the laudanum, and being
unsuccessful, shot himself.
Mississippi valley.
T Hist does not want to be un
derstood as being especially in favor of
St. Helens as against other places for
the starting point for the proponed
Kehalam road. On the contrary, Co
lumbia county's interests come first,
and if the people decide to build a
railroad, wagon road, or make any
other substantial improvements, we
ay, Amen.
Hast plans and suggestions have
been advanced regarding a road across
the mountains to the Nehalem valley.
Pubiio sentiment on this side of the
mountain seems to favor a steam motor
line, and the most practicable route
lb on surveyed out about three
years ago by a party in St. Helens,
which follows up Milton creek to or
near Peris, then across the divide at
toe Dead oi the uiauxanie and over
into and down the valley of Oak Banch
creek to Nehalem river, thence up
said river to Yernonia, or any other
point which might be selected in that
the scheme and waiting for others to
act will not accomplish anything, and
the longer the people wait for outsid
ers to act the greater the diversity of
opinion will be, and harmony and co
operation au absolute impossibility.
Whatever plan decided upon should
be taken in hand by our own people
and pushed forward under their
supervision exclusively. "The Lord
helps those who help themselves," is a
motto very appropriate just at this
time; and if the Portland General
Electrio Company or any other com
pany see fit to aid in the good work, all
well and good. But independent ac
tion should be the guide board in this
matter. None other, in our opinion,
will or can succeed.
At the meeting to be held at Yer
nonia tomorrow, as we nave been in
formed, some definite steps are to be
taken, and all interested ehould be
present. It is a matter in which every
man, woman and child iu Columbia
county snouid teei an interest, it is
not a question of politics but one
common cause in which the welfare of

Naw Yobk, Aug. 2L The British
steamer Cam, which arrived today from
Cooaaw, S. C, Is bound for Yokohama,
Japan, and will carry a large quantity
of arms and ammunition to tbatooun
try. The Cam's agents admit that
she is going to carry arms to Japan,
but refuse to say who are either the
consignors or the consignees. They
say that already they htve secured
eight tons of cartridges and fuses and
fifty cases of arras for shipment. The
Cam ia a British vessel, and there may
be some peculiar complications in case
the Chinese fleet should iutercept her
as carrying articles contraband of War.
The Japanese nobles have sub
scribed 180,000,000 as a fund to be
used iu the prosecution ot the war.
This fund draws no interest. Thus it
will be readily seen that the Japanese
have unlimited confidence in their
country's ability to successfully cot
with China, although the latter coiin-
try has about eight meu to the formor'i
one. The Japs are far superior to the
Chinese iu point ot modern warfare
and consequently stand a better chance
of sucocss against their loss civilised

A Runaway Accident.
Dallas, Or., Aug. 20. Mrs. William
Burns, niece of Mrs. J. J. Daly, of Dal
las, was killed by being thrown from
her buggy, while goiiiK to churchrlast
Sunday, in a runaway accident. The
horse, in turning a grade, began to
kick and run, and her husband, who
waa driving, asked her to jump from
the buKgy. She, in alighting, struck
her bead against au oak stump, and
her skull was broken. Doctors were
summoned to ber aid, but she died iu
two hours after their arrival. The
husband escaped with a slight acci
dent. The family is prominently con
uected in Polk county.
Bacteria In the SolL
Some investigations carried out by
Dr. Alexander A. Houston of Edin
burgh respecting the number of bac
teria in the soil at different depths
from the surface goto prove that
the micro-organisms become less and
lees abundant aa the depth from the
surface increases. For example, the
average number of germs in a gram
of soil examined, which was taken
from the surface, was 1,687,799. At
a depth of 3 feet this average fell to
173,807, and at a depth of 0 feet it
was only 410. These figures are in
teresting and would tend to show
that at a certain definite distance
from the surface the soil would be
sterile. British Medical Press.
Tbey nave it within their grasp to
build and equip a railroad from the
fertile Nehalem valley te the Columbia
river. But will tbey do it, is the all
important question f The plan sue
gee ted at the Vernonia meeting two
weeks ago is, in our opinion, a good
one. By issuing labor certificates,
which ought to be taken in exchange
for merchandise by our merchants
and by tbem exchanged for stock in
the company, the roadbed could be
built, and when that is done the road
bed would be guiltedged security for
sufficient funds to equip the road.
There is no business man who cannot
readily see that such a road, tapping
the splendid belt of timber that it
does and terminating in such a fertile
valley, and last but not least a region
with an unlimited amount of eoal,
would from its completion be a paying
investment. Indeed, after the first
six miles from the Columbia river is
complete it would tap a sufficient belt
of Umber to yield an income, with
which to further the construction. We
might add in this connection that to
insiirs the success of the undertaking
ao great amount of attention should
be given -euUide manipulators. Ws
