Found a Floats. The remains of
an Iudian woman in a rough box, aays
the Cathlamet Oasette, was found by
some parties floating down the Co
lumbia last Friday. Quite a number
ot beads and Indian relica were also
in the box. It ia supposed that the
box had been buried on some point
along the Columbia which was subject
to the flood and bad been washed out
From the appearance of the body it
bad been in the ground for many

Thirty Year im Oppici. B. W.
Wilson, the present clerk of Benton
county, retires from offloe on the 1st of
July after thirty yesrs as clork of that

We know of but two others whose of

Wilson. They are Joel Ware, ot Lane

years. A democrat by the name of

Will Briso A Hwh Prior Hay
nd potatoes, undoubtedly, will be in
greater demand this fall than haa been
the case with such produots for many
years. Hundreds of tons ot tame hay
have been destroyed by the flood, and
hundreds of acres of land planted to
potatoes have auooumbed to the inev
itable. The potato orop in California
ia a total failure on account of drought,
and the farmer who has a large acre
age of potatoes whioh he can market
early ia Indeed fortunate, for that one
product is going to yield handsome
returns, for a tew months, at leaat.
Much Activity. The little town of
Goble is probably the livliest little
place along the Columbia. A force of
thirty-five operators and linemen are
tationed there by the Paciflo Poatal
Telegraph Co., for the purpose of
transferring messages from one side
of the river to the other, by means of
boat, as the cable was oarried away by
, the flood. The lines have to be taken
the very closest care of as the falling
water causes many changes in the
wire supporters, which are on floats.
Such a condition ot affairs is likely to
exist tor two or three months.

Labor 8a lmom. Fishermen at the

carried away most of their gear, and
the result is that the gillnet fishermen
are the lucky fellows. A number of
fish have recently been caught whioh
