The people, by en overwhelming
majority, here said lliey havs fa.it h lit
the republican pnrty, and believe the
policy at aet forth in the state plat
form will be conducive of the greatest
good to the greatest number not by
the mere word but by actually be
ing carried into practice. The repub
lican candidates went before the peo
ple pledged to the enactment of cer
tain legislation, end the people having
confidence in them, vested them witli
authority to carry out their obliga
tions iu the iuterest of good govern
iiieuh Not only were they made cus
todians of the state's destiny, but also
assured by the large majorities re
ceived that the people had implicit
confidence in their ability to enact
good laws as well as to afterward exe
cute them.
The future of the republican parly
in Oregon rests upon tbe official sets
of the men elected to office on the 4tb
inst. Should they neglect to serve
the people according to the edict al
ready gone forth, the day of reckon
ing will surely overtake them.
There are a number of important
measures to come before the next leg
islative assembly, among them the re
enactment of the mortgage tax law,
repealed daring tbe session of 1893;
then the Australian ballot law needs
simplifying in tome degree; the road
ws deserve more than passing atten
tion ; anodes for the collection of taxes
should be more keenly looked after;
and one measure of great importance
to Columbia county and all tbe other
river counties, is a law creating the
important office of public scaler of
logs. Should the latter bill pass both
houses this time there will be a gov
ernor to sign it who is not in tbe log
stealing business himself. Something
should also be done to further protect
tbe salmon industry on the Columbia
river. .
The republican party in Oregon
hare a majority in the legislature, and
if some good legislation is not forth
coming it will have to answer two
years hence for it. ' With tbe reins of
government In the hands of one party
there is no excuse for not carrying
out its pledges to the people, and in
doing so tbey need have no fear of the
result in the future.
Ths majority of people who are
howling high taxes are the very fellows
who are responsible for taxes being
high. For instance, if these high tax
howlers would pay their taxes tbe
county's indebtedness could be paid
off at the rate of about 110,000 year,
nd stop the interest on that amount;
hence instead ot increasing the debt
would rapidly decrease. Agaiu, it it
not the substantial taxpayers, to any
great extent, that complain. As
rule it is either tbe people who have
no taxable property over and above
household exemption or else those who
refuse to pay on what they have, that
make the noise. . We do not mean
by this that all those who have not
paid their tax are kickers, but we do
mean that nearly all the kickers pay
little or no tax. The vote along the
river front shows conclusively what
class of people are doing the howling.
The republicans carried every precinct
along the river front, where nearly all
the substantial taxpayers reside, by
good mnjorities.
Whes the messenger arrived at Ver
nonia List week with news of tbe
'glorious result of the election tbe put
riotic citizens of that place gave vent
to their joy by means of an anvil
chorus which tbey kept up until the
supply of powder was exhausted, after
which the band was brought out and
played Davison's new rasrch entitled,
"What we will not do at Salem." The
festivities were witnessed by 119 in
tensely disgusted populists, who
thought with watering mouths of tbr
haystack of fiat money and blighted
hope of 2 per cent loans which would
never be theirs.
Therk is an old saying that "its an
ill wind that blows nobody good."
While the present high water has done
damage to the amount of thousands
perhaps millions of dollars to the
business men and corporations, at the
aanoe time it has been the means of
furnishing bread and butter to hun
dreds of heretofore idle men, who per
haps, eoulJ not have earned a dollar
in any other way. And by the time
the effects of the flood sre obliterated
thousand! may have been fed through
the effects ot the fl ood's damaging re
sults in some locslitiee.
The Australian ballot law, in the
abstract, is all right. It is true the
law might be somewhat simplified in
its form, which will no doubt be un
dertaken next winter. Under tbe pres
ent law, while it is a littlecomplicated
for one class of voters to understand,
yet there is no chance for sharpers to
successfully issue bogus tickets on
election dsy. We believe the law, with
tome modification, is a good one.
