There is nothing that will reduce the strutting presumption of our populistic friends except defeat. Pride has been go ing before a fall ever since the times of the patriarchs, away back in the infancy of civilization and human nature has not changed much. Our third party friends now pat themselves upon their protruding paunches and hug themselves with tbe thought that tney have the political situa tion by the tail. In their more enthusias tic moments they feel secret pangs of pity for the '-old parties," to which they used to belong, just to think how they will be wiped off the blackboard or the globe. These same ruminations were ruminated by some of these identical people a few years ago when they felt a secret sorrow for the "old parties" because they (espec ially the republican) were to be extermi nated entirely by the probu. Where are tbeprohis? They are here yet, but their party is of very small consequence hardly enough of its remnants left to to maintain ,. feeble organization. It will be the same way with the populist party pretty soon .only more so. There will be nothing left of it -nothing but a bad recollection and an occasional denial of some repentant mem ber that be ever belonged to it. In this connection the Statesman wants to give a little advice- to first voters. It speaks from an experience of forty-three yeais, during which time it has witnessed the rise nd fall of a large number of third parties , threatening in tbe hey day of their mush room splendor to sweep everything else i political before them. Young man. if you are going to vote the populist ticket, don't! You cant afford it You are young. Your future is before you. Pretty soon yoa won't have any party and you'll be groping round in the dark of lonliness, a political orphan. For the fellow who has been join ing all the parties as last as they have sprouted, it Is well enough to vote the pop ulist ticket It is in his line. But, young man, yon don't want to be a political or phan. You would better cast your lot with rtha great party of progress the party of patriotism the party tbat believes in the nation's prosperity at home and its honor abroad; tbe party of action; the party that igoes ahead and does things. Think about this, your first vote, young man. Salem Statesman. A. 8TUO.VO TICKET. J u. lire William P. Lord, of Marion county, who heads the ticket for governor, is a man whose four teen years of brillant service on the supreme bench of the state is especially qualified to fill and dignify the office for which he has been nominated. Tbe people of Oregon have become heartily tired of freaks whose only ambition is to gain cheap notoriety compromise us in the eyes of the country. and invest the office with everything but credit and dignity. Under Judge Lord's leadership the republicans will march to an easy victory next J sue, after which the ad ministration of our state affairs will be in tbe hands of men who will not be carried away by every mushroom political heresy which sore-head fanaticism may suggest The head of our ticket will make a governor whom the people ot the state can point to with pride; who possesses the eminent qualifications essential to the intelligent ad ministration of efficis! functions, and who can always be depended upon to be in har mony with the people and in close keeping with the spirit of the times. Tui nomination of Hon. Jundson Weed hit tne ouice ot county clerk was only a tardy recognition of a most es eemed and respected citiatn. The statistics of the census bureau with respect to the burden of mortgage indebt ednessthe heaviest of all charges upon the property and industry of the country are well worth analyzing for the meaning of the information which they convey. In the aggregate, this form of inHebtedness reaches the enormous sura of $1,935,455,898, of which $1,186,272,27" is on farm lands, and $8,249,183,614 Is on city and town prop erty. That Is to say, of tbe total amount, . only a little over one-fourth rente upon the Tural population. This will surprise those who know nothlug about tb matter except what has been told tbem by populist ora tors and newspapers. The calainyites rep resent that most of the mortgage stand for money that has been borrowed by the farmers, whereas the truth is that the dwellers in the towns and cities owe three dollars where the farmers owe one dollar. It is easy to see by a plain comparison of the figures that the men who own farms have less to complain of -incombrances than those who own other kinds of real estate ; and it i also well known that the latter have infinitely tb larger degree of taxation to pay on their property . Facts of this kind are never found in tbe litera ture of the populists; and yet they gre.of surpassing importance to tbe honest uis (Cus.ion of th subject.' Another point of decided significance is Ma. Philuf A. Fkakss, of Scappoose, who received the republican nomination for county commissioner, is a gentleman of great energetic resources and wide business experience, and possesses in a marked de gree the qualities of the practical business man, which -constitute the make-up of a man who Is able to honestly and intelli gently admlniiter tbe affairs of tbe county. Mr. rrakes' nomination was one of the wisest acts of the convention, and those who wish to see the county's interests in the hands of a safe and careful man. will not hesitate to endorse its action by giving mis candidate their hearty support. The republican conrention on th 4th inst. administered pill to the two-bits-a-week party that will cause many a cramp in the populist stomach before it operates on the 5th of next June. It is altogether probable tbat Hon. Chas. W.Fulton's defeat by Judge Lord for tbe nomination for governor will be the means of landing him in the United States senate, for which the state senate could not make J ntjbtreas-1 hi republican nominee lorcoun lownmg, oi uiiiton.ia a msn in whom the utmost trust can be imposed, and one whom the people of Columbia county can depend upon to conscientiously administer in tbe official duty to which he has been nominated Th two-bit party made the usual blonder of replacing T. H. Grewell's name on their ticket with tbat of M. Davidson. Mr, G re well had too much common sense, both to suit the populist party and to permit nimseit to De slaughtered on their ticket. A bsioadx of Coxey's "common squeal' army will be organized in this county im mediately after the election. Its members will be recruited principally from tbe can didates on the two-bit ticket, and its line of march will be np Salt river. Th first division of Coxey's tramnarmv. which arrive', at Washington in a box car, was met at the Baltimore A Ohio denot bv the city authorities aud promptly landed In the Jug. This is the kind of a reception the whole outfit will get. The Mist has nothing hut the moat su preme contempt for tbe xculch emitted by me poppy moutnorgan at Vernonia, and win not condescend to quarrel with the brav ing jacsass wno poses as its "editor." Th two-bit party promises to imnort the long-naireci rreag, Waldrop, to assist it in making tbe campaign in this county. It is, nowever. conspicuously silent about that other freak, "Prof." M. V.
