' BOOH OP GROVEB.
Kcoord of the Tribe of Grover, by
Beieklah, the Scribe.
CHAPTER f.
Now it came to p in the lust day
that the follower of Grover, llieereat.
stiriiamed the jroMile, Uie same which
lt:al Ruth and Esther anil the panic
and the Hawiian trouble, were vexed
with vexation esceeiliuft, inasmuch as
lie lisleth not lo the locality where
tlirv ahideth t.
For, behold, in the beginning they
girded up their loin and went before
the people, crying with a loud voice,
Verily, we ay unu men that we are
Groverile from exceeding far back,
roe unto ye who furjrrt it.
And) verily, we hold iu exceeding
great detestation that which the
children of nieu call the tariff, fur it is
not a thing fashioned for our enemies,
the name which lua licked the ever
lasting fluffing out ol us from genera
tion to generation
Yea, verily litis) sanra little protect
ive tariff it buildeth furnace in the
valley and mokeUcks on the mount
ain tops; it turnelh the wheels of tiro
gresa and cauaelh the desert to blossom
like untt a green bay tree.
Wherefore do we of the tribe of
Grover, the great, despise the same
a a curse and an abomination in the
sight of nieo. Yes, the Same which
offendelh oar nostril, the Bjiue which
we smelleih from 'r off. And, he
- hold, in the great and terrible day of
the ballot, wtien the army of voter be
gathered together, shall we arise in
our might and smile our enemies into
mince meat. Yea. we shall lay tKem
nut cojd on a platform of free trade,
and cover them over with plank of tar
iff reform. And our enemies shall be
scattered like unto the leaves of the
forest, for Grover shall rend them iuto
fragments like unto a potter's vessel,
the which hath been smitten by the
fliiwer of a youth, ami then shall the
end .come. For in that day shall our
bsuner be placed on the outer wall of
the nation, and we shall bow down be-
foreGrover, our great deliyerer, who
shall henceforth be known as our great
deliverer on Mount Buztard. And he
shall reign for four year, and sIihU
shower good lime and lat office and
and snecial inest-agea and free raw
materials upon us in rich abundance
forever. And the black smoke ot m
dualry shall no longer obscure the
noonday sun, and tne tanner nn
wear pants woven in foreign part and
socks from the h-k-s of the sea. And
It was even so. And after a space of
time, Grover, who was a mighty fisher
girded up bis loins and chattels and
cabinet and went up and piched bis
tent over against the copitol, which is
in the land of Columbia, and the band
played, behold the cat hath come back.
(CHAPTER U. ""
Now, when Grover , was crowned
line of the nation, it came to pass that
lie was puffed up iu the pride of hi
heart and other viscera, inasmuch a
his raiment became several size too
small to contain bis joblot. And he
shook himself by the hand, which is
after the manner of his tribe, and
spake unto himself, saiug, Ha, ha!
Behold I am monarch of all I can get.
Four more year for Grover ; four more
year in clover. O America, America,
how often would I have gathered yon
tinder my wing, but ye would not. But
now I have the on the hip and, ye are
confronted with a condition, not a the
ory, for behold, I will rule or ruin ye.
Yea, verily, to commence with, I will
brandish my great silver eword, and
U who believe on me and do my will
shall be saved, and all who don't shall
be broke. And I will call my sooth
sayers together and they shall linker
at the tariff, and when they have fin.
iehed their tiukerilig, Mt Kinley, the
father of the factory will not recognize
the same. And it shall come to pass
that all ye who barken unto the sound
of my voice, shall tiave-sewing mach
ine from Glascow at cost and ten off,
and corrugated iron caskets from the
endsol the earth. And when Grover
bad spake these words lie crew twice,
and the people went out and wept
bitterly.
CHAPTER III.
And after the space of time it came
to paw that when the shepherds look
rf the firstlings of their flock and
beared them and took their fleeces
tip to the city to exchange them for
piece of silver, the wine men of the
it said unto tUeroi "Noi this sea
son some nthi-r season." Yea, Grow
great. e ta uJl wont auu a yarn
wide, hat the slump -to x4 is seven!
oubita wider. And the shepherd bar
reled exceedingly, and some of them,
yea they which had barkne4
joto the jroicef Grow, aenote their
' roast and went and 4ow ttittl
bent head crvinit to one another,
"Behold if thou wilt kill me I will di
eveu so unto thee." And when the
digger of (ha earth went up with
their silver and lead and precious
stones and said to the money exchaug
era, "Give us food that we may eat, and
clothing that we may dress up," the
money-changer laughed little cold,
hard laughs, and sang Bongs of great
sacrilege, saying t "Grover, Grover.
four years more of Grover J we would
buy your lead, but times are dead, tili
four more years are over," and other
psalm. And when they heard the
psalmist, many weird kickers and
-ithers lore their hair, and all I he in
habitants of the nation said damn.
Ami it cam to pas that the storms
came and the panic defended and the
children of darkness lifted up their
hands and wrung I hem in great la
mentation, saying: "Wherefore art
thou. Grover, our deliverer, and where
fore art the good times at?" and a
miiihty Voice came hack from the
wilderness, saying, "The president is
lishing aud must not be disturbed."
CHAPTER IV.
And it came to pass that the chil
dren of the desert, yea even the rem
nant of the tribe of Grover which
dwelleth in the valley ol the Jordan,
the same which flowelh from Lehi
mnnd about Bluff Dale unto lha Dead
sea, they bttckleth on their armor and
cutteth a wide swath. And they lifted
up their voices crying, "Behold, a
mighty tribe are we, a mighty man is
Grover, yea a mighty profit, and he
has promised us mighty good limes if
we but remain faithful, and uncom
plaining, and obedient, aud busted lo
the end. And, behold, we are his
children and it behooveth as to obey
our great father, for is it not writ that
obedience is better than sacrifice and
to darken than the fat of rams?
Wherefore we will cleave unto Grover
and his great notion through thick
and thin, through weal and woe,
through poverty aud distress, and fi
nancial ruin even unto death, forever
and ever, amen." And it came to pass
thai they gathered together the war
riors of "Sprinirer on the twentieth day
of the first month and enquired of the
piopbets saying: "Shall we go up
against William?" snd the prophet
cracked a elate aud held it before the
warriors, saving: . "Thou shall go up
and thus shall tbou scatter the cuckoo
of the Sangamon." And the Shunt-
wavites.and the Maneckeites, and the
blatherskites all shouted amen. And
when tbey were gathered together j
tbey looked terrible as an army with I
banners, and the cried : "Behold we
will smite our William ; yea, even the
Sangamouites, hip and thigh, and ous
Billv shall be heard no more in the
councils of the nation." And the war
riors arose in their wrath and said
"Billy, go to." And the next day it
anew.
CROP-WEATHEB BULLETIN.
S. H. Blandford, of the Oregon state
weather Service, sends u the follow
ing report for tha week ending Tues
day, April 10, 1894 :
WESTERN OREGON.
Weather. The rainfall was below
the normal; the temperature cooler
than the average by two degrees daily,
and the sunshine above the average
during the past week. The weather
conditions are favorable si ore previous
rain have saturated the ground, mak
ing it. difficult to work. The excessive
sunaldue was most acceptable. The
showers which occurred during the
latter portion of the week were unde
sirable; they interfered with the pro
gress of farm work, though not ser
iously. . . .
Crops. -Taking into consideration
the lime of the season, the weather of
he past week' was most acceptable and
favorable to the advancement of vege
tation. The season is slightly later
than the average in the Willamette
valley and in the coast district. The
decrease of precipitation ami higher
temeraturet have prodoced a grad
ual improvement. The surface of the
earth is covered with grass which is
making a vigorous growth Pasture
are furnishiug nutriciou food for
stock. There being graas sufficient
for stock, feeding has ceased in many
sections. Winter Wheat continues to
improve; the dull Sd color on low
lauds, caused by excessive moisture, is
rapidly disappearing. The vigorous
growth and health appearance of
wheat on higher , land suggests an
abundant harvest. Seeding is pro
gressing, though the ground is difficult
to work. Peach and cherry trees are
in full bloom iu the Willamette valley,
and all other fruit tree are showing
the bloom. Strawberries are in lull
bloom. In the southern counties the
bloom is far in advance of other sec
tions of the state. Plum, peach, pear,
cherry, apple, and silver prune trees
are in full bloom and are dropping.
Fruit prospects never were belter.
Clackamas county hop fields have an
tir of prosperity. Growers fail to re
call hop vines superior or further ad
vanced. It may be too early to esti
mate the crop of the coming season.
The opinion ia generally expressed
that the hay crop i assured, and an
abundance of fruit and grain may be
expected. Frost that injured some
peacb bloom occurred on thti 2nd.
Other light frosts, which were not in
jurious, occurred on the 3rd, 4th, and
7th. All kinds of stock are in good
condition. The opinion i current
that the wool clip will be up to the
average. Improvement and activity
in farming operation have caused a
corresponding activity in the town.
Fishermen report fair catches.
