1 discouht the effect of the unfavorable
report which they know the fai'ls

brought to bear on toe democrats
A 8t. Helena correspondent of the the committee, in order tq get them to
Cathlamet Osteite, referring to an ar- et Mr. Cleveland down as easy as poa-
tiole which lately appeared in these jble in that report, not for his ow
columns under the head of "A Change sake but for the good of their party,
Necessary ," in which we recommended if they keep on as they have started

in raising wheat, potatoes, hay, aud
the ordinary crops, than the culture of
Irwjt and hops.
The correspondent makes one es-
eeially startling statement to the
effect that the farmer who has Jive
acres of potatoes can sell them for fifty
feats a sack and realiss $1,000 out of
Jiis crop. We would like for tho cor
respondent to refer bis readers to
some farmer who has realized any such
rwsult from his potato crop, or even
five par cent of the amouut. We can
(cite the writer to numerous cases
where farmers in ibis immediate
neighborhood have raised fine fields of
potatoes this year and have not found
sufficient demand or prices for them
to justify digging, and one splendid
field of potatoes inside the limits of
this place now lies in the ground
where they grew, the owner not being
jMetified in digging them. This is not
a solitary case. Our correspondents
jn the interior of the county mention
the fact that the finest kind of potatoes
can be bad in their neighborhoods fer
; the digging. This, of coarse, is bad
state of afiairs and should not exist,
nor would it if there was a greater Var
iety of salable crops produced, but we
&o not wish to discourage the produo
tion ot staple farm products, such as
are enumerated above, lor they are at
solute necessities and when not over
produced are. always salable at good
prices. On the other band fruit and
hops are always salable at prices which
justify the producer in making large
outlay of labor. It is entirely withm
the limits of reason to say that fruit
and hops were the only profitable farm
products grown in the state this year,
the hop crop being the only one to
yield any considerable amount of spot
cash. The result of this season's ex
. perieace should demonstrate the folly
f giving too little scope to the variety
of farm products. It has been the un
profitable custom of our farmers to
raise those crops which can be pro
duced at the least expense of labor
and outlay of capital and energy; the
net result Ibis year being that the
great body of arm products cannot be
marketed for prices which will pay for
harvesting them, while those crops
which find a ready maikat at good net
ash profits cannot be had at any
price, because they have not been pro
duced in sufficient quantities to supply
Jbe demand.
of
Let go on Pennoyer. If the people
of Oiegon really want Pennoyer
stop misrepresenting facts regarding
the condition of the state, and other
wise disgracing it by making an ass of
himself, they are going at it in a very
unphilosophio manner. A fool is
person who mistakes his folly fo
smartness because his imtucihty at
tracts a little comment or commisera
tion, and because he is destitute
sensitiveness hp imagines himself
great man because he is noticed at all.
The best way to close this man Fen
noyer s brainless bead is to totally ig
nore his vapnrings and treat his messes
of sculch with thi contempt it merits.
Just so long as the press and people
continue to notice and dispute him
just so long will he continue to con
stitute himself a laughing-stock for
the whole country and disgrace the
state. Let go on bun ; contempt , will
kill him, but criticism will only have
the effect to cause the continued flo
of acrid, nauseating vapor from the
lump of sour paste with which his
head is filled, instead of brains.
Ottght to Know Its Value. About
a year ago l took a violent attack: oi
la grippe. I coughed day and night
for about six weeks; my wife then sug
rested that I try a bottle of Chamber
laiu's Cough Kemedy, At hrsl 1 could
see no difference, but still kept taking
it, and soon found that it was what I
needed. If I got no relief from one
dose I took another, and it was only a
few days until I was free from the
cough. I think people in general
ought to know the value of this rem
edy, and I take pleasure in acknowl
edging the benefit I have received

It is not surprising that the demo
cratic bosses of the house bad decided
that the final vote on the Cleveland
tariff bill should be taken on the 17th
.of this month. There is so little that
can be said in its favor that tbey want
,the agony over as soon as possibIe,brit
democratic absenteeism has already
.caused them to extend the time until
the 29th inst. Neither republicans nor
jd.isratisfied democrats expect that the
4ill will be either defeated or mater
ially changed in the house, although
fl is said that Mr. Cleveland will try to
piuster up enough democratic votes to
.defeat the income tax amendment. It
is in the senate that the bill can and
jvill be defeated, if the words of dir
aaijafied democratic senators can be
depended upon, and republican sens
tors do not allow themselves to be per
suaded into helping dissatisfied demo
crats to secure special amendments.
jf the democratic senators can be
Jorced to vole for or against the bill
just as it is sent from the house, there
are good reasons for believing that
Hill and Murphy of New York, Smith
,of New Jersey. German of Maryland,
.Faulkner of West Virginia, and Mor
gan aud Hugh of Alabama, will vole
against it. If they do, the bill will be
defeated with two votes to spare, even
ff the populist senators vote for it. as
lliey probably will oo account of the
income tax.

Senator Fbye introduced a resolu
