Their Reasons. When a man
takes a oiear out of his mouth to tell
the editor to stop his paper, that he
can't anora it, me euuor may
nothing, but he thinks a good deal.
And when he stops his paper because
he "hasn't time to read it," and goes
down town and whittles a drygoods
box for hours, the editor may say
nothing, but he thinks a good deal.
And when he stops his paper because
a two-line item does not suit him, and
then pesters his neighbor by borrow
ing the paper, the editor may say
nothing, but he thinks a good deal.
And when some business man says be
does not advertise beoause it does not
pay and then uses the entire sidewalk
in displaying bis goods, plasters them
over with such attractive cards as "I
am cheap," "buy me," etc., the editor
may say nothing, but he thiuks
great deal.

SuiciriB at Pittsburg. Tho llltlff'
village of Pittsburg, in this county ,wus
the scone of a suicide last Saturday
morning at 9 o'clock.which waa a most
severe shock to the citizens of the
place. Mrs. D. W. Case, wife of one
of the proprietors of the Pittsburg mill,
while suffering from temporary aberra
tion, plunged from the county bridge,
a distance of twenty-five feet, into the
Nehalem river, which, at this season, is
deep, swift, and turbulent. The lady
had been ill for a snort time previous,
and during her illness bIis suffered a
reourrencs of a former aberration and
while in the unbalanced state of mind
suddenly fulfilled an insane determina
tion to destroy herself. Hhe was not
missed by her family until nearly an
hour after she made the fatal plunge,
by which time her body had drifted a
distance of a mile and a half, and set
tled to the bottom of the stream in
sixteen foot of water, where it was
found at 2 o'clock p. m. the following
day after a systematic search of the
stream. The remains were brought to
St. Helens and taken to Portland on
Wednesday for internment. Mrs. Case
was about thirty-five years of age, and
leaves a husband and two children,

friends iu their sad Bud distressing

Buroi,arh ijt Portland. Portland
is suffering from tho work of thelves
and burglars, which are reported to be
very numerous at present. Houses are
broken into almost nightly. Many of
the robberies era not reported to the
police for several days afterwards, and
then it is too late to find any clue to
who the miscreant might be. On
Tuesday evening, during the absence
of the family, a residence was entered
and about $.')00 in cash, besides many
other valuable articles, ware stolen.

Thb Midwinter Fair. While the
great midwinter fair at San Francisco
was to be in full blast January 1, the
latest word is that, though it is officially
oponod on time, the exposition is far
frem complete as to the products of
California, and It does not seem proba
ble that the various Pacific states and
other departments will be fully organ
ized before February. As to the Ore
gon exhibit, the gentlemen interested,
who are subscribing their money as
well as cheorfully donating their time
and services, are constantly receiving
assurances from all parts of the state
that great interest is felt, and a gen

in every practicable way.
Which is Which? Reader, when

coin in ns and see who wants your trade.
We 11 guarantee that if yon trade with
those that recognize the local papers
as an incentive to thoir business, they
will save yoU money.' "The man who
advertises certainly has inducements
to offer you, or he would not ask you
to rail and sec him before buying. The
linn or person who has any articles or
a slock of goods for sale, who does not
advertise the fact, is supposed to be
dead to the world and don't intend
that tho public should know that he
wants their trade. In other words
such people cast their light "under a

Prizb Potatoes. Iu a recent issue
of Vick's Floral Guide, we notice a list
of prizes awarded for fine potatoes, at
Vick A Sons international exhibit at
Rochester, N. Y. There were 600 ex
hibits of one dozen each which came
ftm every part of the United States,
but principally from the west and
northwest. The committee awarded
five prizes in all, and the third prize
of $20 was awarded Harry West, of
Scappoose, who exhibited a dozen
American Wonder potatoes which he
raised from seed furnished him by
Vick A Soiib. From one pound of
seed Mr. West raised 230 pounds of
potatoes, and he is conhdent that he,

How About Title. That there exists
in the usually qniet and peaceful little
city of St. lleluns. a degreu of dissatis
faction and jealousy among some of
the girls, remains no longer a doubt.
The degree of jealousy is assuming
proportions of considerable magnitude,
since just a day or two since a young
lady of this place was heard to remark
that she considered it very unfair that
the men of thia place were paying so
much of their attention to the lamp
posts about the city. It is a fact that
at about this season of the year the
lamp-poets are being bugged consid
erable and it ia not at all astonishing
that the girls would remonstrate. Do
not worry, girls, the holidays are gone
and perhaps the men about town will
endeavor to be more gentlemanly in
the future, or you might overcome the;
evil by holding the lamps yourselves,'
Business Depression. Tol. Thomp
son, the district agent for the State
insurance company of Salem, was in
town Tuesday on his way to Salem
from an extended trip to the Sound
country, and in speaking of the de
pressed nature of business, Mr. Thomp
son remarked to a Mist representative
that there was more business in the
little town of St. Helens than there
was in Fairhaven, Washington. He
says that there is absolutely no bus
iness being done in the Sound cities
and that in one instance he made par
ticular noto of the foot that at one of
the laading hotels of Fairhaven, where
the monthly expenses of the house
easily reach $1500 or flSOO per month,
there would be from two to half dozen
guests per day. In: New Whatcom,
Mr. Thompson saya that business in
terests are more lively, yet in a very
depressed condition. In Seattle bns-
