ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR MISTAKE.
ISsiysthe Portland Evening Tele
gram i "There is a great deal of rot
iu this cry about prospective Urifl'
refotm being llio cause of business do
pressioo. Practically it uiakcs but lit
tle difference whether the MeKinley
t the Wilson Urifl' it in operation, so
long as all the money is being locked
up in bank vaults. Let congress do
ttomelhing vo force the money into cir
culation. That is the immediate de
mand of the country." Just so; and
the way to stop further hoarding of
juouey, and get tiiat alreadj piled up
in the banks into circulation, is for
he democrats to give the country
some kind of a financial policy and a
tariff that will protect the producer
mini manufacturer alike from east and
west without discrimination as to loca
tion, or what he produces or manufac
turer. The democrats may call it rot
or anything else they like, but it islUeJ
....... e i4.. .....: .:t J
certainty of democrato tariff tint A
ing that frightened all the nioney infc
9
f
hilling, closed all the factories and
mines, turned the multiplied thous
ands ont to starve, and caused this tin
parelled business depression ; and it is
the muddled, unsystematic maimer in
which the dominant party continues
to tinker with the tariff that keeps the
money out of circulation and paralyzes
the couutry. By all means let con
gress Jo something, and let that some
thing be to kill the Wilson tariff bill
as soon as it is presented for its con
sideration. With a definite financial
policy and a protection policy this
country could be prosperous, even
under a democratic administration,
and it would be much more generous
aud graceful for them to acknowledge
their mistake and give us these things,
than to continue the mad policy of
sticking lo its platform at the expense
of the prosperity of the country and
the comfort and happiness of the
people.
If we had a few more men in this
state like Pennoyer, eastern people
would think that it is worse here than
it is in the poverty-stricken sections of
Bussia. In bis recent letter to Cleve
land he says that two-thirds of the peo
ple here are without employment, and
one-third are absolutely destitute. We
don't think that a half million dollars
expended in setting forth the resources
-of our ever-prosperous state would
hare attracted so much attention as
this one ntterance of "Our Sylvester,"
as the associated press sent it to every
comer ol the land. This letter is an
insult to the people of the state, and
will do no little injury in the way of
keeping immigration from here. If
Feunoyer must growl, let him go to
Kansas where there are some calmity-
howlers to accompany mm in aia
foolish lingo. . .."'
The Charleston Gazette, the leading
democratic paper of West Virginia,
aays of the tariff bill : "Unless we are
greatly deceived, if this bill is adopted
as reported it means West Virginia's
(-tectorial vote for tbi republican nom
inee f ir president in 1893. Indeed,
perhaps it would not be too much to
auy that it is an assurance of national
republican supremacy for many years
to come. And surely the democratic
party need never agaia to hope to suc
cessfully appeal to the people of West
Virginia for indorsement. No, never
again. Thus all the struggles and
sacrifices the people of this state have
made to free themselves from republi
can rule, the victories won on hard
fought fields, are lo count for naught.
4iod save the party."
Thb rounty judge of Josephine
county, VwlDey Colvig, at the meeting
of the state board of equalization, in a
'few remarks relative to the assessment
of that county last year, touches the
populist assessor in this manner : "Our
county assessor made a general reduc
tion in the valuation of farm lands
throughout the county. It is my opin
ion that he assessed it at about 50 per
vent of its real value. I also believe it
was done for political effect in order to
Jielp the side bo belongs to at the next
-election. He also knew that the county
' court would be compelled to levy a
higher tax iu order to raise money to
run the county another year. This
'would tend to make the court very un
popular with the people just what
lie desires to be done."
Whkhbveb a member of eongress
arises to remark "I am a democrat,"
the question should be propounded at
once, "What kind?" and be should be
tagged accordingly. Whether for or
against queen making, for protection
or for "taiiff for revenue only," for an
income tax or against it, for protection
to sugar to please Louisiana, and a
kick at pig iron to punish Pennsyl
vania and Michigan, ;tnd ell the other
questions of a more personal nature to
)iis royal highness, who, more than
any president who has preceded him,
assumes responsibilities foreign to his
turtles.
Thkv tell this story on A BlulTton
adventist who prophesied that the end
of the world would come ut a . certain
date : "lie put on his ascension robes,
climbed to the top of a straw-stack,
and waited for the crack of doom. Got
ting tired lie fell asleep. Some boys
saw the man and touched lighted
match to the straw aud awoke him.
Casing at the flames on every side he
cried out 'In h I, just as I expected.'"
When a million persons have beon
inducted by a tariff into the trades
that fall under the head of brass, glass,
sine, tiu, nickle, copper, lead, wood,
leather, paper, cotton, and wool, it is
gross injustice for the government to
come along and ask them all to quit
their shops and go to teaobiug school
or farming.
As a result of the democratic admin
istration the public debt is piting up.
This is due, not to iucreased expendi
tures, for they are less than a year ago,
but a falling off in the custom-house
receipts, due to the holding back of
im ports for lo wer d u ties.
Thb English press says that the
Wilson tariff bill is "a wise and patri
otic measure," which gre.tly honors
democratic statesman. They even go
to far as to name Wilson as a good
choice for president.
No wonder they
like him.
One would suppose from the fre
quency of the slaps in the face which
the administration gives the demo
cratic senators that it had no need of
their support
Thb Oregonian has received a postal
card from G rover Cleveland, saying:
"Please tell Governor Pennoyer to at
tend to his own business, I will attend
to niiue."
Thb woolgrowers and wooldealers
of San Francisco have taken steps to
fight the Wilson tariff bill in congress .

The New Year was ushered in very
quietly at our burg.
Bad colds akin to la grippe are epi
demic at present.
Mr. and Mrs. Will White are spend

aud friends.
The roads are in a bad condition.
Why not plow and scrape them up in
the spring?
A. Barber's bouse was entered the

Several of our young people bravtd

New Year ball at St. Helens.
D. C. Schtll and wife have been
visiting relatives here for the past
week, and returned home to Albany
Saturday.
The entertainment and supper at
the church on the 29tb, was a com

splendid time until a late hour.
In justice to Mr. A. Stump it should
be stated that he was in no way con

trouble on the Steamer Kehani, as
staled in last week's Mist.
The all-round improvements in The
Mist of late, are noticed by all.
Everyone should lend a hand to help

A. A. Merrill.
There appeared an item in your jonrnal
a week or two ago which called the open
expression of about all who came within
our knowledge of "That beats the devil."
Tkere are ways for people to get notoriety.
The railroad company had the section
foreman place cross-boards about sixty feet
each way from all railroad giade crossings,
so in running the snowplow over the track
they can tell where thecrouings are, thus
leaving the planks down all winter.
Road Hunervinor E. Merrill made a thor
ough inspection of the old county bridge
across Merrill lake last week, and found il
iu such a rotten condition that it is unsafe
for a doe to cross. He will report his find
ing to tbe county com t this week, and it is
expected they will do something for the
safety of life and property.
