Tho duty of once more writing a sa
lutatory and making a fornial bow to
the newspaper readers of Columbia
county now devolve upon us, and we
do so with a full appreciation of the
important duties which we are about
to assume. In consequence of the
position which Columbia, county oc
cnpiea aa one of the most important
a the state, it will be our single pur
pose to wora tor me county's best in-
terests at all times, to advertise its re
sources and encourage every public or
private enterprise which will in any
way benefit her citizens or add to their
wealth and prosperity. Several years'
residence in this county has given us
thorough knowledge of its great re
sources, and wide acquaintance
among its citizens which we hope to
still further enlarge. The columns of
. The Hut are open for discussion of
questions of general interest to the
public, yet we must emphatically state
that wa reserve the right to reject any
or all correspondence of a radical per
. aonaj nature, wherein the character
or repute of any person is in peril
We ask those who have contributed
from time to time matters of interest
from their localities to continue the
same, and, if possible, enlarge the vol
ume, as it is our sole desire to make
Thk. Hist a paper for the people of
this county, taking the responsibility
upon ourselves to thank yon for the
favors you have bestowad upon this
paper. In the past. We shall not neg

Way possible, and remembering the
dnty we owe its readers we will make
. a faithful endeavor at all times to fill
ihese columns with matters of interest
and importance to our readers. Hop
ing to retain the valued support which
Thk Mist now enjoys and merit the
patronage of others, we disappear at
the door of our sanctum and cheer

COLUMBIA CQVSTY VS. PORTLAND.
It is safe to predict that an unpre
cedented stir is to be made in this
county the present year. We see and
hear of valuable and permanent im
provements being made in all parts of
the county, which lead to this belief.
New enterprises a-e being inaugurated
which add largely to the county's
wealth, developments are taking place,
and proving profitable and valuable,
which heretofore were mere supposi
tions; the natural resources of the
county are being developed ; the in
creased amount of invested foreign
capital in our midst is a feature to be
considered as a matter of great conse
quence, in the future it not immedi
ately, and the general aspect is such
as to instill in one the felling of cer
tainty that Columbia county ia to push
more rapidly on to that scene of ac
tivity which has for many years per
vaded the entire northwest. Evidences
are brought to bear that Columbia
connty possesses many resources that
other less fortunate sections are de
void of and which must be developed
in order to supply the fast increasing
demand caused by the inauguration
of manufacturing pursuits near, if not
in our immediate midst. It is coming
more plainly to light every day that
in order the metropolis of our state to
push ahead with that same brik move
ment which it has been characteristic
of these many years, it must step out
oi us aoor yara to sees: tne necessary
substance on which to build itself upon
a more substantial foundation. And
where is she to look for this substance
except in the imn-.ediately adjacent
coutityf Columbia comes first under
thia head, and we see no reason for it
sot being the sole simply section as
very resource requisite to the attain
jxieuttif the postilion, commercially,
