of equalisation aloptd a resolution ad,
dressed to the legislature, recommending
certain changes In the assessment law. It
recommends that as the IS mill lax , now re
quired to be levied by the oouuty courts for
school puriMwea, Is an Inducement to assess
projierty at less than IU actual cash value,
the said tax ought to bo ahullshed, and In
lieu thereof un act should be passed requir
ing entd tax to be levied pro rata according
to the children of school age in the county.
The board wants the law amended su as to
give the state board of equalisation (10 days
in which to complete its work, Instead of .10,
as now It recommends that the law allow
ing deductions of Indebtedness and exemp
tion ot sanio from taxation should be so
amended as not to allow any exemptions
for Indebtedness, it asks thereieal of the
present law ontheassessnientof mortgages.

of her teacher and iba love of her fellow
pupils, and when she became a teacher it

she could. Not confining her work to the
iextlawks and tlie ordinary methods of the
schoolroom, she did all she could to In
struct ker pupils regarding their manners,
morals and physical welfare. For 11 years
she taught in Kebra-ko. Washington and

In IH7 she was married to Prof Oeorge
Morris and chose hi profession, tbat of
phrenology, and went with him to New
York, where she totk a course at the Amer
lean Institute of Phrenology, under the

largely in Chicago, tit. Paul and Mluneau-
olis, In the latter place delivering over lot)

tracted by the various reform movements
in progress and she advocated them with
all the zeal of her nature, particularly th
reforms pertaining to nor sex, and now in
a larger sphere, that ot tha lecture field

thought worthy, her favorite topic being
social purity, prenatal culture, woman suf
f rage, dross reform, hygiene and the cause
of prohibition. She also wrote ou tha sev-

Last year they purchased a home a short
dtatance west of Portland, where they have

Mr. F. Van Meter, of Portland, has spent
