" A fatal accident occurred near Olen

The steamer Astorian took a Jolly

There seems to be no end of trouble
connected with the operation of the
Vernonia-Houlton atajre line. The

The reports of the San Francisco
board of health, and of the Tscoma,
Boaltle and Spokane boards of healtb,
are unusual tributes to bo paid even to
an article of so high a character as the

Judge Ward of Portland, and W. J.
Rice of St. Helens, addressed the citi
zens of this place in the courthouse on
the political Issues, from a republican
standpoint, Monday night. The house
wss well tilled and the speeches were
received with great enthusiasm. The
iseuos were. presented in a very clear,
concise manner by both speakers, an J
in conclusion the judge rendered a
solo a parody on "Marching Through
Georgia" which was the bit of the
evening.
The November number of "Free
dom : a Journal of Freedom devoted
to many things," is at baud. It is pub
lished at l'ortland and lloulton, Ore

ors. It professes to bo a radical re
view, and contains a number ot arti
