Jacob Timonen, a Rnrsinn Finn, of
Ixiwer Beaver, was examined before
Judge Blanchard by Dr. W. C. Belt, of
Kainier, and pronounced insane. He
was taken to the asylum at Salem by
Deiiuiy Sheriff Milee Wednesday.
Little Carrie, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. W. J. Bice, met with a painful
accident Tuesday evening. While out
with her doll cariiuge she fell, causing
a double dislocation of the left arm at
the elbow. Drs. Cliff and Belt were
summoned and reduced the fracture.

Samuel C. Bitchcy, of Hillsboro,
one of Oregon's earliest pioneers, died
lust week, aged 85 years and 6 months.

the state continuously since, most of
the time in Washington county.
The Kamm building on the corner
of First and Pine streets, in Portland,
was destroyed by fire Sunday night.
During the fire a fireman by the name
of Huston fell from a ladder onto the
slone pavement and was taken to the
hospital in a probably fatal condition.
A man by the name of John Gray was
also burned to death, being Uken out
of the debris next day.

Last Saturday night while Mr. 8.
Saulser, who lives about three miles
west of town, was here in attendance
at Masonic lodge, some snealc thief
entered his house by breaking the
door lock, and carried offa Winchester
rifle and a watoh. The watoh wae in
it trunk which was broken open by
the thief. Mr. Saulser says he knows
who the guilty parlies are and will
lose no time in trying to effect their
capture.
The Iralda and Kellogg have agiin
locked horns. LaBt week, probably
through a misunderstanding of sig
nals, the ateamers looked guards, the
Kellogg being slightly in the lead
leaving Portland. At Portsmouth the
KMaaa ran so dose to shore (the river
being very narrow at that place) that
the Iralda was grounded. The cap
tain of the latter steamer made com
plaint to the local inspectors and a
hearing of the two sides of the case
will be had soon. This scheme so
often resorted to by the slower boat of
locking guards witli tne lasier one in
,rW that, she mav not pass is a dan-
serous one and should be suppressed
bv the inspectors. It places in jeop'

board as well as the safety of the
ateamers, and the patrons of this
route have com plained no little amount
Captain Walter Tibbetts, who will
be remembered by our readers as be
ing in command of the three-masted
schooner, Sadie F. Ciller a few years
ago, was in St. Helens yesterday. The
Caller, live jearg ago took several car
goes of lumber from this place to San
Pedro, Cel., from Mucklo Bros. mill.
Captain Tibbetts at that time formed
the acquaintance of a number of St.
Helens people who were glad to see
him back among them again. He is
now in command of a new four
masted schooner, the Sslvator, which
is now taking cargo in Portland, and
will sail for the south in a few days.
Mr. and Mrs James Muckle gave a
very pleasant dinner party to a num
ber of friends Monday evening. Those
present were : Mr. and Mrs. James
Muckle, Misses Dell Butler, Alice Cox
and Josie Groves, and Messrs. Wash
ington Muckle, Professor Looney, J.
R. Beeglo, and Rev. A. B. Wade, of
Hillsboro. After tea social conversa
tion was indulged in, interspersed with
vocal and instrumental music by Miss
Butler, umil late in the evening when
the party departed leaving their com
pliments wiiu me nost ana uosiess.
Prof. Clceton was in St. Helens last
Saturday night and left on the Dixon
on Sunday for Clatskanie, where he
will preside as principal ol the nuest
school in the county. Mr. Cleeton
and the people of Clatskanie should
each congratulate themselvesthe lat
ter on the selection of such an able
Instructor, and the former on being
selected to preside over the school that
is starting out under such favorable
circumstances. Further comment is
unnecessary in this connection.
The oircuit court docket in a "dan
dy" this time, perhaps the largest evi r
reiorded in this county, li wouia
seem from the number of divorce
cases that "marriage was a failure" in
Columbia county.
The tax roll for 1892 is completed
and was forwarded by the clerk to the
Secretary of State Monday, where the
state board ol equalization will omci
ate on the document.
Mrs. Lucy Miller, of Lone Rock,
Gilliam county. Or., is visiting her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Beegle, of
Gilllon. She will remain about a
month.
Final proof was made before the
county clerk Wednesday by D. M,
Dorsev. Dan Stehinan and E. E. Grin-
die, with C. F.Doan as witness in each
oase.
Rev. Joe Waldron returned from
Vernonia Wednesday, where he spoke
on Tuesday before the county alliance.
He left on Ibe Lurlineior roruana.
