Globe, St. Paul, Minn."
Tho late rt port of the Minnesota
State Food and Dairy Uommission
contains Ihe details of the state ehem-
iat's experiment and analyses to do-
tor mine the strength and keeping
qualities of the various baking pow
ders. Samples of the numerous brands
on sale in this stato were purchased
and first analyzed to ascertain their
teaveniug power. The Royal Baking
Powder is shown by the tests of both
auulysts, Prof. Eberman and jrroi.
Drew, to contain the greatest amount
of leaveniug gas of the cream of tartar
powders thus purchased and tested.
Hence this powder is officially rauked
at the bead of the list.
The report attaches great im-
nortance to a series ot experiments
in Macartain the cliaracier. iw
ciency and keeping qualities of the
powders. Baking powdor that vary
In : strength or that roadily lose
strength before use, are unreliable
and will not give even results ; be
sides, it is an indication of the use of
improper ingredient in their com
pounding. Thet teat were pplied
to a large number of samples of dif
ferent age of the three cream of tartar
powder best known in Minnesota.
They showed the trength or leaven
ing power of the Royal very much
greater than that of the others. The
uniformity of strength of all the
samples of Royal tested wa remark
able. . It Waveuing power was prac
tically unimpared even in the oldest
specimens. The difference in the
amount of leavening gas in different
samples of both tho other braud wa
.n araut aa to serioualv impair tluir
usefulness in baking. As much

ported of satisfactory strength and

would deal, especially with the prenent and

what parly proposes to in the future.

Tbe republican party, he said, showed by
Its S'-tloni U was a free-coinage party, and
by this silver bill hud made half the dis
tance from where il found silver two years
ago to free coiunge, or putting the bullion
we place in our dollar on a par with gold,
sni we are completing the task, ssid he, a
fust as we cau iu a hu-iness way, by bring
ing together all tbe nulions of the world, in
an tiitcrnaitonai monetary couicrence,
when we will try to convince them it will
be better for tbeiu and better for us to re-
monetize silver. If we Just "forced" free
coinage, we would get all the silver ot ihe
world now, wbicu would be exchanged lor
our gold, snd we would have only silver.
I hen when we go into Braxil to buy coflee.
or Cuba for sugar, or Jupun for tea, with
our silver coin, all we could get for it would
be wliut the bullion is worth in the market
of the world, consequently we could not
Buy as much coll'ce, sugar, or an) thing for
the ti we set for a day's work as we do
low, but U we can prevail onaUcouutriesto
make silver a standard of money, then we
can without these direful results toourcom-
mon people, because upon them the burden
would inevitably fall, puss a free coinage
bill. ..
The Mckinley bill was explained showing
the piotcction to our farmers, dairymen,
fishermen, fruitgrowers, and laborers, Tbe
recinrucitv clause Was extewdvely dealt
Willi, showing how our trade had been In
cruised by it under this administration.
The stringency of the money market wa
taken up and thoroughly explained in a
reasouithlu and logical wjy, to tbe perfect
?atlfaxtiou of nearly everyone present.
The peoples' party was then taken up,
and their platform dealt with in a way that
snowed tli speaker was familiar with it,
and made il look like it was made of elastic,
and would stretch around any way to suit
the occasion on the mouey question, and
in regard to "land and alt the natural re
sources of wealth," he showed the doctrine
hiiddowo by that party was nothing short
of robbery, communism and anarchy. Al
together this was the gmndest review ot
tbo bl-tory ot the republican party, and
the most rigid arraignment of tbe peoples,
party ever heard from the Hps at any oe.

School c'.oae thi week for the sum

teachers and pupil ere ready and glad
la lav aside school work for a time,
so a to enjoy a little recreation and
change of occupation. A full repor

week.
We hear a great many .expressions
of regret been use the school picnic was
given un. We, too, regret it very
much, but it take a great deal oi work
and some money to give a occessful
picnic. We were diapiointed in our
arrangement for raising money to de-
fruu rim pxuonsi of tho day. and
knowing that it would lie almost im
possible to make the picnic a success
without tho help of that which alone
can give, we concluded to postpone H
to eotne future tune.
Dulv before pleasure i a maxim
which we should strictly adhere to in
our school work, but when the ther
mometer suddenly rise from ngures
where all are com foi table, up into tne
80'a, it is in onler to r.lax from etern
duties and partake of such luxuries as
ic eold lemonade and confectionery,
such as was furnished the school One
sultry day last week. The entire
school, with many invited friends,
gathered round tne teauve noaru on
the shady side of the schoolhouse, and
all enjoyed, and will long remember
that pleasaut and social occasion.
If cigarette smoking i an evil, and
we believe there ia no question about,
it, it is a great evil and effort should
lie used to suppress it. The most
careless observer can aotice the rapid
increase of cigarette smoking, ami the
many bad rea.-.lta that arise from it.
in in veam the manufacture of these
little rolls of had tobacco ha increased
from over 230,000 to more than twelve
tiniei that amount, and it ia estimated
that two thirda of them are smoked
by boy. This evil should be sup
pressed by law, so say a great many
people, and so it should, 4uttlie state
ment is more easily made than car
ried 'into effects The reformation
should beein at "home, ami until ii
