In the name of commou sense if we Itave anv credit-" let it be made use of for the ptiSIio ' eood, and stop thi; ruruima beggardly policy of discourag ing puWic improvements. The good U trait that once served the purpose of the prospector, with bis pack on bis hack is no Juoger worthy to be tolerated, even though our forefathers did "li-tve good health and live' to a greil age tinder such circumstances." We must look to a higher civilization than ib.it which existed during the reign uf the savages in this country. --;. ; u A' SQpXpZFLATFOBX. The republican platform is longer . than J customary, but there is noth- log superfluous in it: It - deals with questions which how occupy the pub . lie mind urare about to do so. In . essentials the platform 1 is in accord with the opinions of progressive people - in. Oregon as well as' throughout the . eountr..' The hearty endorsement ol the wise policy of,' protection to lionte industry is in harmony with the: -best istereel-rf this young state, which as- pires to industrial greatness. The de claration regarding' silver might be more emphatic, bat as free coinage is practically dead,? the convention did well cot to burden iteelf with needless assurance. The convention deals ' clearly and tersely with' the ' Chinese and! immigration problems, placing " Oregon in line with the other states ct the Pacific slope on these vital questions,"' In advocating the election " of United States senators by popular v-vote. Jhe platform steps aside from ' the beVt'.en track to approve a method that is now receiving consideration from tlulughtfuf, practical ' reformers. We believe the eonvent?"n bas dpne well to put Oregon r- iblicans on xeeatd as favorable to ie proposed change which is calculated to restore the ten ate to its true place as a co ordinate branch of the legislature. " In dealing with' state ' affairs the pl.it form does will to give.prominence to the Columbia river improvements. and to recommend the completion of the Cascade locks and canals by "contract. The taxation plank is some what vague, but is as explicit as could "te expected in a platform that is not expected to deal with every detail in 'complicated questions.' , "It yon Jtave ten dollars to spend," said Barnum, "spend one for the ar ticle sod nins in advertising it." - This sentence is being used by many news papers te encourage and increase their advertising patronage. It is an ex aggerated utterance, containing only a grain of truth. ' As much money can be wasted in useless ' advertising as in anything else. T pay, it must be ' done rightly iutelfigently and , thor oughly. Ho one need think '.adver. lining will pay without attention, just imply by making an announcement. It take! brains te advertise and bring results snd sooner1 the -people stop blowing iu money en every advertis ing K-hrme which ' ia presented to them, just because it isi the general opinLu that "it . pays to advertise," sooner will U be .better for - the mer chants and (hose who conduct' legiti mate and "-serviceable advertising medium.' Newspapers of value : to cnterprisiug and wideawake citizens arc those which print the news." They . are the papers which are read by the people, ' Advertisements have, to be fresh ana attractive in matter and style in order that tbey may secure and bold the attention of readers. At present there, ie much botch adver tising done which is a total loss to the advertiser and very, often - does bins aese harta than good because pe )trt'ting Is reatt readily and as closely a to mue reading matter iu papers and period i cals of known circulation. There is a good deal of current writ ing devoted to tins euhject, Niwb iwpers in nil parts of the country haw articlea upon it, and lending lungs sines dismiss it. Ia tho Century M lsaao O. rotter has an elaborate sr iirlo on the subject, with illustration uf bud roads ami good roads. II bows thnt llie cost of bad roads to the country, resulting from use of tbcm in doing its necessary work, it enormous. Waste it everywhere. Tw or three of his i lustrations we give. Mr. Potter thinks that with the $140,000,000 expended annually me united states on schools, ov pei cent, is lost by the absence of pupils, and he thinks this is primarily due to bad roads. He notes the fart that when election day is preceded by heavy rain storms, there is so feiious a falling off of the vote that really the result is not a full expression of the people. Again, he figures that the cost daily of maintaining horses and mules in this country above the age of 2 years upon farms amounts to $4,000,000 per day, and considering how many of these are kept iu the stables in the condition of enforced nenesg Dy trie deep mud, lie believes that in this respect alone the sunt of $SO,000.000 per year is lost, and his conclusion is that good roads are a reces:ity not only for the economical work of man, but are an adjunct to civilisation itself. The problem of making good roads must be a special study for each par ticular or separate locality, according to the nature of tho ground, climate nd seasons and niateiiuls obtainable; and without the necessary knowledge, based on experience and judgment, good results are not to be exoected. Work must not be dmij iu any hap hazard, unmethodical or unscientific way. So done, il is work wasted. Special knowledge is an essential qualification in a supervisor. Here is a fact to which too little attention is often paid. The supervisor of a dis trict should be a man who knows how to build 'roads. Otherwise be will be almost useless. It might be a good plan to have a general supervisor of roads for each of our counties. This fflcer might be expected to have knowledge and skill in road-making. The duty could perhaps be added to the office of tile county mrveyor, and the people then could elect the county surveyor with a view also to his fit ness for supervision of the roads of his county. With this issue The Mist prints both sides of the paper at home, hav ing dispensed with the patent out side. We have also increased our of fice force and expect to improve the paper materially in the future, nnd will endeavor to give the news in de tail as far as is obtainable, and also as fares onr limited means will permit without catering to any particular class or association, always claiming the right to express our -individual sentiments on political questions snd either matters of general interest. ' We wish to inform our friend, the Marion County Democrat, that Judge Moore , is not the attorney of the Northern Pacific railroad, nor has he been for a long time. .
