COMMUNICATED.
EoiToa Mist: The county commis
sioners examined the bridge across the
Merrill lake about two weeks ago, and
told some parties here that they were not
able to do any tiling at present but
recommend to more the road from the east
side to the west side ol the lake. It is my
opinion that this will be quite Impossible,
besides it will be very expensive, even as
much as to fill the bridge as recommended
last whiter, (which will be cheaper iu thirty
yean than to reconstruct.)
The present road irom Ilcer Island to the
lake runs on a high gravelly ridge which
is never muddy and always in good rendi
tion, and to think that the people are
foolish enough to change it to a place
which will always be muddy along the foot
of a springy clay hill, is entirely uut of the
question. My attention has neen called to
still a cheaper way to cross the laktn by
getting psruibmi in iroiti ihe ruiiioad com
pany to grade a road along the com pan v a
Lit. The gravel van be (jumped oti the
raiiroad track and shoveled out Into the
lake so as to toriu a wagon road at a vi-ry
small exoanse. Tbe county had an ou
port unity last fall and still possesses, which
(hey may never possess aain. Mr. C. N.
Kodgers is still here with bis stea.u shovel
plant, and it mny be possible that be could
still no the worx Del ore moving, neonereo
lost fall to till a bank acros-i the lake with
coar-e rock and gravel at 23 cents a cubic
vs.nl. end urns wiiiiiiir then to bid for tbe
job. It was undoubtedly a golden op-
p nututy lor me county, in cnangmg uie
road as proposed by the commissioners,
will give Mr. P. H'tghes a large expense.
It will run through the very best purtol
his land, (a fine meadow) and will take the
water ont of hi pasture, and give him
nearly three-fourths of a mile of double
fence to build. -
J be cost of building a hoard fence Is about
8400 a mile. It will take 1050 boards 1x6x1(1,
that will cost not less than 13.IO per
thousand delivered. It will take 682 posts
at about 16 cents each delivered ou the
ground. It will take four kegs of nails at
93 per keg, and about 40 cents per rod to
build it. The cost of buying the right-
of-way, surveying and laying out,-grauiiiK
building the road equal to such as we now
of-way, surveying and laying out, grading
bare, 1 am much of the opinion it will cost
more man to nil uie iaxe in u s wiaest part.
