TBt ASTORIA RAILROAD.
For twenty years A.toiia has
Wrestled with the railroad problem.
For twenty yeara Astoria hat talked
rilrod became talk didn't cost any
thing. For twenty yara Astoria ha
invited proposition from Eastern cap
ltelist, entertained and accepted six
teen different ones. Individual resi
dents ot Astoria, have expended thous
ands of dollars to wine and dine rail
road builders, who hadn't had a square
meal for tlx months, but because their
grandfathers were acquainted with
men who had built railroads and they
represented a syndicate. For twenty
years Portland has been fighting every
railroad proposition ever inaugurated
and by their influence have smothered
them all. This talk of building rail
roads has been left as legacies to the
progenies of our race and become an
heii-loom in many families in Astoria.
Anxious mothers who have rubbed the
boys' stomachs for cramps, discovered
when too late, that it was only wind on
the stomach caused by the father be
ing an advocate for years of a railroad
to Astoria. It has beccme a hereditary
taint unfitting the rising generation
for anv other pursuit in life. Too
much paregoric and soothing syrup
has been consumed.
There is one way to build a railroad
to Astoria. There is only one way to
build it Dwyer will not build it. The
Ooble peoplj can build it, and have a
proposition all ready to submit to the
trustees as soon as the Dwyer contract
expires. They held an important busi
ness meeting in this city, Friday, at
which meeting the matter waa full;
considered. The Ooble people mean
Itusiness and are prepared to talk bus!

The property owners in Astoria
have selected three good, honest, rep
resentative men as trustees, and en
trusted tbem with 10JO acres of Unl.
with instructions to enter into contract
with any reliablecoropany for the pnr
jwse of building a railroad. Those
men are John A. Devlin, F. J. Taylor
and Geo. FlaveL If the property
owners who have subscribed to lh
land subsidy will authorize the trustees
10 turn the snbtidy over to the Goble
syndicate and enter into contract with
them, work on the road will be com
menced within thirty days. Astoria

ence tm the Chilian troubles, we are
again led to understand, that an
amicable settlement will be made.
However, the interest of the people
throughout the entire conntry is none
the less abated, but on the contrary,
has increased to that extent that tbey
are more than ever anxious to be made
acquainted with the whole facts, which
have been unnecessarily kept from
them so long. The president, we
think, has had sufficient time to come
to some decision in the matter, so as
to inform congress clearly as to the
situation, and at the same time ex
press his views and offer any sugges
tions as to a course that . this govern
ment should pursue. Congress is
evidently waiting for th's, and if not
forthcoming, should demand that the
entire correspondence, and every mas
ter and thing connected with the con
troversy be laid before that body at
ince. This, we can Safely assert, li
the universal sentiment of the Ameri
can people.
Ex Speaker Rekd is quoted as say
ing that neither Blaine nor Harrison
would be Dominated for the presidency
in 1892, and says : ' I do not believe
the chsnces for either Harmon or
Blaine are as good aa some dark horse
not yet mentioned. While Mr. Blaine
is not an outspoken candidate, the
action of the party leaders indust
riously importuning his candidacy
and ardently advocating his ranse
receives bis approval. The Blaine
forces will persist in contention, and
the Harrison faction will not succumb
to any compromise measure in favor
of the former. The context will grow
more heated and bitter as the time for
the convention approaches. I feel cer
tain tbe result will be similar to that
of tbs convention of 1880, at which
James A. Garfield was nominated. The
hitter feeling between the factions
would be modified and the whole party
harmonised by . the nomination of a
dark horse.'' Mr. Beed ought to be
good authority on this point, but we
believe that the American people are
co closely allied to the policy advocated
and executed by Secretary Blxine that
the Harrison faction will cut but a
very small figure in the contest, - If
the convention was tomorrow and Mr.
Blaiue would openly permit his name
to be used he would be nominated on
the first ballot ; in fact the opposition
would sink into insignificance at the
very mention of bis name.

Jinks Lotah, chairman of the re
publican state central committee, has
issued a call for a meeing of tbe com
mittee ia Portland on February 3, for
the purpose of fixing the time and
place for holding the state convention,
to apportion tbs deligates among the
several counties, and to recommend
the time for holding county conven
