Foeh, commander-in-chief of the allied armies, has just recently com pleted a triumphal tour of tho Unit ed States. He was given the most en thusiastic demonstrations by cheer ing crowds at every step. Dr. Lorenz, a noted Austrian sur geon, recently came to this countrv to conduct clinics for crippled child ren. He is admittedly the most skill ful man in his line in the world. He came here, not to earn money, but to give his services free, as an expres sion o f his gratitude for the food and clothing given the children of Europe during and since the world war by the people of America. What happened? His coming was so bitterly resent ed by American surgeons that he has felt deeply hurt and has threatened to give up his work and return to his home in disgust. It is only fair to say that not all American surgeons took this resent ful position, but so many of them did that tho affair became a national scandal. We claim to be tired o f war, but we still give our highest praise to the military hero, and give only crit icism or at best, neglect to those whose work lies in the arts of peace or in relieving the distress of suf fering humanity We have a long road to travel b e -1 fore we may honestly claim that ours is a really civilized country. "W h at is education?” was the question propounded to a group of thinking men the other day. “ It is duty,” said one. “ it is a prlvilego,” said amther. “ You are both right, tu t you do not go far enough,” said the man who had propounded the question. "Education is a responsibility. The man who gets an education incurs a great responsibility in the k nd of use he makes of it.” There is a great truth in this, -nd, unfortunately, many educated men and »om en have never r.ali/.ed it. Education is great bloss.ng, but It is like other blessings and must be shared with others. The man who gets an education and then uses it for bad purposes, or even lor his own selfish purposes is doing him s»lf and the world a great wrong and will be lu ld accountable for this along with his other sins. J. Kerr to a group of Oregon farmers at college farmers’ week. Roosevelt was quoted to the effect that America's whole system rests upon the farm and that the welfare of the whole community de pends upon the welfare < f the farm- ¡ er. This was said to be as true to day as it was when made. Science is used in rapidly increasing degrees 1 it was noted, in helping the farmer meet the agricultural needs of the world. In the great agricultural state of Illinois 25 years ago 26 stu dent» were studying agriculture. Ore gon had but 109 ■•■gricultural stu- derts twelve years ago, but 900 last yeaf. ...- ♦------------- How about the lutions? Is largely what you make it.
