COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPKB Member National Editorial Asaa clatin and Oregon State Editorial Association. THE COMING OK OVB LADY, 1921 The New Year is at hand. The cartoonists and picture boys genei ally represent 1921 as a baby, but we like to forecast it as a WOMAN we don't say a "beautiful" woman, be cause all women are beautiful. We would like to see '21 typify WOMANHOOD for good and sutfi cient reasons. One is that the coming year would have no interest whatever In war. or the things of war. This old world has had its complete fill of deadly conflict during the decade Just closed and if the WOMEN could have their way there'd never be another on this footstool of the Lord. If 1921 were a WOMAN, the world would see more religion and more of the good things that come out of it. The cynics and Bolshevists and ex plotters ot manKina generally may:anlj can be easily investigated. sneer all they like at religion, but God in the form we civilized people know Him, or in some other form, has been a comfort and a high Inspir ation to untold billions of people In the past and He will be again to un told billions in the future. The earth needs a great revival of religion in 1921. If our New Year is anything like WOMAN, we will see more coopera tion in the real things of life and much more gentleness and human sympathy and love in 1921 than for a generation The vice of hate has encircled the world and inflicted its wounds on countless hearts. Only human sympathy, kindness and love will heal the deadly hurts that thb human race has suffered. We repeat: let's typify the New Year as a WOMAN. Benton County Courier. THE BUSINESS OF LIVING In his autobiography Benjamin Franklin tells how he kept books on himself. He had a- ledger, at the top of each page of which he wrote one ; , . .'i"J.:." to temperance, a third to industry, a fourth to silence, and so on. At the end of each day he exam ined himself and if he had failed In any of these virtues he gave himself a black mark on the ledger. In this way he kept himself informed as to the weak spots of his makeup, and devoted himself constantly to im proving them. Thus he kept the rec ord (n the ledger balanced. To Ben Franklin living was the most important of all businesses. H was more concerned in showing gains and stopping losses in living bust ness than in his printing business. Franklin's bookkeeping Bj-stem was practical application of the in junction. "Know thyself." Self knowledge is the fundamental of liv ing business. Most of us are too busy with other businesses to look after this most important of all busi ness. . It generally runs by itself. That's why there are so many fail ures in that business. . The new schoolhouse, although built only a short time ago, Is too small to take care of the growing list of students It appears to the Mist that the only solution of the matter is a union high Bchool so- that the grades can be ac commodated In the present building At this time when retrenchment is in order, it might seem unwise u suggest a further expenditure of the people's money, but under the exist ing circumstances, we believe that the expenditure ls Justifiable It would be better to expend a little more and then get value received for the whole investment than U endeavor to hold back and not get value received for the amount thu far expended. ' St. Helens must keen up its schools. They are the city's best asset. OUR DEAD IV ENGLAND About five hundred and fifty fam ilies in the United States have re quested that their soldier dead may remain permanently in England Secretary of War Baker has given orders for the remainder of the American dead In England to be con centrated in a cemetery In the vlcln , lty of London. Fred B. Kilmer, tho father of the late Sergeant yce Kilmer, Headquarter Company. 166th Infantry, one of the first American poets to lose his life In the war, recently visited the grave of his son In France. In writing to the war department he says: "Upon arrival at the cemetery, the sadness was greatly softened when we witnessed the condition of the American cem etery. All seemed to be in perfect order, kept with the utmost scrupu lous care and In charge of persons who were in love and in sympathy with the work." Astoria Budget. The Mist believes the city has a good administrative body and one that will take interest In the conduct of the city's affairs. Mayor llallagh is an experienced official and one who will work for the best interest of the city as he sees it. Harnett has had much experience in county and city matters, as has Hrower. Mt, Donald by his service on the council at Clatskanie and at St. Helens knows much of city affairs and will do his duty. O'Connor has served as coun cilman, faithfully and conscientiously and will continue to do so we believe. The Tillamook Headlisht in com menting on the failure of Morris Brothers bond house, reminds its subscribers that many safe and sane investments are to be found in Tilla mook county, and urges that the "trade at home" principle be thought of by investors. The same is true here in St. Helens and Columbia county. The Mist could advise that before taking these distant flyers that those with money to Invest look over some of the many attractive oronositions which lie close to them Another kind of a four flusher is the fellow who strolls through a hotel lobby to get to the dairy lunch. Put off until tomorrow the mean thing you intended doing today. RUNNING FORDS IN COLD WEATHER "Ford operators can save them selves considerable trouble this cold weather if they give nroner attention to the Ford clutch," said Mr. Bay- nard, special agent for the Standard Oil company, In discussing cold wea ther lubrication. "Many Ford operators complain that when the engine is cold it is hard to crank and the car has a tendency to creep forward while cranking. "To eliminate as much as possible this cause for complaint they should first make sure that the clutch throw out lever is adjusted so that, with thi hand brake lever set, the clutch is fully disengaged. As this relieves the steel discs in the clutch of all I'ne driving from the driven discs as to allow them to turn freely on each other. This is necessary because the driving discs are conected to the en gine crankshaft and the driven discs cannot revolve without turning the rear wheels. But if the lubricating oil used is of too heavy body the ; discs will still have a tendency to stick together and make craukiug I difficult. "In the Ford power plant the i alutch Is combined with the engine j and lubricated from the supply oi 1 oil in the crankcase. If the oil in ' use has a Zero Cold Test it will not congeal or become too heavy at any : temperature above zero, and the clutch discs will then separate freel when relieved of the pressure of the clutch spring. This will permit the engine to be cranked with minimum effort, and will check the tendency of the car tocreep forward. "Zerolene Light is the correci lubricant for Ford cars in cold vea ther. It has a Zero Cold Test. It is correctly refined from selected Call. ! fornia crude oil and it flows freely Iu a1' temperatures down to zero It help9 considerably to eliminate the l"c inereor.
