THE ST. HELENS MIST. tRIDAY. DECEMBER 24. 1920 PEDESTRIANS SHOULD BE CAREFUL St. Helens, Ore., Dec. 20, 120. Editor ot St. Helens Mist: Some few weeks aso I read with interest your article regarding reck less driving ot autos, and wish to commend you for your effort to arouse a more general spirit and practice of "safety first." It Is my misfortune to be com pelled to drive over the road from St. Helens to Houlton very often some days six or eight times some nights after dark. The quite general practice of using the vehicle pavement tor foot-travei lers causes every conscientious driv er of a machine to tremble in his seat very often as he barely misses some person who is walking just ahead of him and whose presence Is not discovered till almost too late to swerve around. People do not seem to realize thav the string of lights serve to blind the driver, especially If his wind shield is a little wet as It often Is this time of the year. - Another thing Is true, at night two machines approaching each oth er cause a double glare of blinding light and beside not allowing room to provide for more than the two ma chines, makes it Impossible to see any one walking till too late to pre vent accident, often. Foot travellers should walk on the left side of the pavement if they In sist on running risks, and thus face the approaching machine, then as It nears them if necessary they can step out of the way before the car Is upon them. They should not forget "safety first." and their life and limb is in danger. If they are struck, the driver may be absolutely blameless. In any case, it is too late to think about who is to blame after one is dead. The road nearlng the school house Is often lined with playing children. Many of them are careless, some reckless, others defiant. Parents should seek to protect their children from the constant danger by instruct ing them to play elsewhere, and to walk on the sidewalks. Frequent conditions arise which make terrible accidents possible, and only by almost constant miracles do we prevent a record of hurt children. Al this might be avoided if the safety tnst" idea was more fully developed and each one made it a uufy to make accident as difficult as pcbsible. Toot travellers on sidewalk.
