ABOL'T A PRIVATK, It Is all wrong to call a-soldter a "priTate," says a correspondent of the West's Kecall. "There is nothing private about me," he asserts. "I have been examined by 60 doctors, ml tlmv haven't missed .t blemish. I have confessed to being married, and having no children. I have told my previous occupations and my sal ary. I have nothing in my past that has not been revealed. I am the only living thing that has less priv acy than a goldfish. I sleep in a room with countless other men and eat with about 900. I take my bath with the entire detachment. I wear a suit ot the same material and cut as 5.000.000 other men. I have to tell a physician whenever I kiss a pretty girl. I never have a single minute to myself. And yet they call roe 'private.' It is right that the question was brought up and will be only right If officials of the company make an Investiga tion of the matter. The same class of equipment which was in use in St. Helens some 10 years ago when St. Helens was only a village and had few telephones, is still used in the local exchange office. The telephone oficials know that St. Helens has grown from a village to a small citv of Importance. They know their busi ness is 1000 per cent greater than it was seven or eight years ago and they know that it is impossible to give anything like satisfactory service with the old fashioned switchboard and equipment they now use. St. Helens is growing and as It grows, the business of the telephone : the larger newspaper of the fuir- company will increase. It seems sized town is a man who buys every- strange that business men at the thing. He lives In a house and on head of a large corporation who de-j land that he owns. He Is interested pend upon the public's patronage In everything that the business men will not make plans to handle the are doing. Through good advertising! present volume ot business even If1 you can sell him everything from the! they do not give a thought as to the. paint on the roof of his house to the: TALKS WITH ADVERTISERS The Business Man Is the Chief Suf fer If He Doe Not Advertise At a recent meeting of the Ameri can Advertiser association. It mentioned that, not the country pub Usher but the business man Is the chief sufferer from the fact that our, merchants and manufacturers have; riot utilized the country newspapers, advertising columns as they should and can be utilized. He who reads' the little crossroads newspaper or future possibilities. St. Helens has been mighty good to the phone company. They should, at least reciprocate by giving to their willing workers tho tools with which to work. RESULTS WILL FOLLOW In the last number of the Mist was an account of the tine blooded cattle recently bought by progressive Col umbia county stock . raisers and brought to the county. County Agent Howard states that from January 1, 1919, to date, about $60,000 has been expended by Columbia county men for thoroughbred cattle. The buying ot such cattle means that In a few years, fine blooc'ed and pro ductive herds of cattle will hive sup planted the unprofitable herds of "boarder" cattle or beef cattle which many farmers now own and instead of an unproductive herd, there will be productive herds and the dairying industry of Columbia county will be enlarged and made more profitable.. The Mist congratulates those far sighted and enterprising farmers who were not afraid to invest a few hun dred or a few thousand dollars In the foundation of a paying herd of cattle and believes that In a few years they will be reaping the benefit of their foresight and enterprise. cement in the floor of his cellar everything In the barn, and every Everything between the roof and the ) cellar, everything in the barn, an.li ivcry tool in the field he buys, and! you may sell him. He is not like the! dweller In the big city flat, who gets his water through a pipe, his light through a wire, his heat from the basement, and whose shopping con sists in getting a ready-made suit of clothes and a ready-mrde dinner In a tin or paper box. The man who reads the country paper buys every thing. He buys pumps, Ir.mps, stoves, automobiles, clothing, dresses, books, paints, farm implements, furniture, carpets, oils. You business men re present a dozen manufacturing en terprises If not more, then Isn't it true that a man here who has any thing to sell can sell It to the reader of a country newspaper. And every man here could more profitably ad vertise in a country newspaper in proportion to Its circulation, than in lany other publication on the earth. You cannot help to emphasize the value of the country newspaper as an advertising medium for it has that value. When a plumber makes a mistake, he charges twice for it. When a carpenter makes a mis take, it is just what he expected. When a lawyer makes a mistake, It is just what he wanted, because he has a chance to try the case all over again. . Wher the d?ct3r makes a mistake, he buries it. When a judge makes a mistake, It becomes the law of the land. When a preacher makes a mis take, nobody knows the difference. But when an editor makes a mis take Good-night!
