ST. HELENS MIST, FRIDAY. AUGUST 22, 1919
DAYLIGHT LAW KILLED
Washington, Aug. 20. Repoal of
the daylight savings act wa accom
plished today, the aenata voting to
sustain the house In passing the re
ntal measure over President Wilson's
vste. The vote was 67 to 19.
The repeal of the law become ef
fective after the clocks are turned
back to normal in October. U is one
oi the very few measure whih havu
twice been vetoed by a president and
have become laws in spite ot the
veto.
Agitation for repeal of the day
light savings law first . aae from
farmers, but recently had been but
tressed by labor unions, mother,
clubs, rural school authorities and
many other interets. Urban opinion
also has become divided and officials
of many cities and smaller towns
have come out against the law. Con
gress has been flooded with peti
tions for repeal ot the law in colli
sion with a counter flqod urging re
tention ot the statute.
Lobs of time in farm labor is the
principal objection raised to the law
This complaint comes principally
from farmers employng hired hands
acd, opponents of the law declare, all
farmers, at some time during the
summer season, are employers of
labor and suffer from the law.
The complaint Of loss of labor Is
based principally on the shortening
of the working day on the farm by
too advancing of the clock one hour
from March to October1. The farm
ers' complaints declare they cannot
adjust farm work to the advanced
time because, with the clock advanc
ed an hour, farm work cannot be be
gun as early In the morning as under
the normal time schedule and must
close an hour earlier. This is be
cause the dew on the ground In the
early morning prevents plowing and
other farm labor under tho advanc
ed time schedule.
Farm hands hired men, etc. it is
contended, will not work after 6 p.
m clock time, or at most 7 o'clock
Advancing of the clock an hour
therefore, it is declared, causes a loss
of an hour's working time at the end
of the day.
