COLUMBIA CO. ROADS
IN BAD CONDITION
H. J. Lecbner, county agriculturist
ho has just returned from an at
tempt to TlsK Mist and Hlrkenfeld in
Columbia county, reports that the
bad roads start immediately on the
other side of the Clatsop county Hue.
l'e was unable to drive his car oven
the Columbia county roads so he
transacted his business by telephone.
The stretch o( impassable road Is
nearly two miles long. The Astoria
Astorian. j
J. F. Dopplmaier, who has Just ,
returned from a trip to the Nehalem, j
states that the report of the Astorian
is correct. It Is almost impossible, he
says, to get over the road just north ;
of Hlrkenfeld. A lumber mill, which
is doing much hauling over the road,'
Is attempting to bridge the deepest
mud holes and with good weather
almost due, Mr. Dopplemaier thinks
the road will soon be passable. i
It is the main thoroughfare be-1
tween Astoria and Portland, and it'
does not appear that It is good busi
ness to have it impassable.
FINE STOCK GOES TO
MULTNOMAH COUNTY
G. L. Tarbell of Yankton, recently
sold to H. R. Findley of Bcaverton,
Oregon, a registered Shorthorn bull.
Mr. Tarbell makes a specialty of
breeding and raising thoroughbred
cattle, and the fnct that a buyer came
from Multnomah county to purchase
such stock, is evidence that raising
good cattle is a paying proposition.
Mr. Tarbell was one of the first ot
Columbia county's stock raisers to
adopt the idea of raising only good
cattle and he has been very success
ful in his venture.
