Wash'., spent Sunday as guests of A.
L. Larson and family.
Prof, and Mrs. J. M. Miller have

requirements of farmers are prepar
ing to garden on an extensive scale.
Mrs. P. J. Anderson, who has
been 111 in a Portland hospital. Is
convaleslng and will return home in
a few days. Her daughter. Miss
Agnes spent Sunday with her.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Retell spent
Sunday at Mr. and Mrs. John Farr's.
Mrs. Retell was formerly Miss Made
lene Thomas, a teacher in Yankton
schools.
A. H. Tarbell is preparing a nice
herd of Shorthorns for exhibition at
the stock show Jo be held next month
in Portland.

serious condition, has died. She is

County boys to go overseas.

Marlon Moore, who was recently
discharged from the army, is spend
ing some time with his friend, Wes
ley Heverling.
Samuel Conklln, after several
weeks lay-off, has returned to Tim
ber, where he has a position in one
of the logging camps operating near
there.
Mrs. Ethel Hall went to Westport
Friday to remain for some time.
S. V. Melmester spent several
days In Portland this week.
Mrs. Maud Webster and Mrs. Wm
McDanlel are suffering from severe
colds to the extent that they are con
fined to their beds.
Mrs. E. , A, Gessell has recovered
from her recent illness and was in
Vernonla Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Pr Ingle are visitors
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.Dallman.
Ed Hansen came down from Camp
Lewis a few days ago to see his
mother, who was seriously burned
when her home was deotroyed by
fire several weeks ago.
Harvey J. Duncan, who has beei.
in the U. S. navy for more than a
year, is spending this week with his
mother. Mr. Duncan has many
I friends here who are always glad to
see mm.
The school building was the scene
of much activity and merriment Fri
day evening. There was a party in
nearly every room and the occasion
was enjoyed by each group.

The hard ralus of the last week
have flooded much of the bottom
land and stopped much stump pull
ing and clearing.
The school has moved Into their
new building and all reports prove:
that It is highly satisfactory.

Frank Kllby received word that his
brother. James, was severely III
with Influenza. When word was last
sent he was no better.
W. L. Brown received a letter from
their boy who has been In France and
he is now on the Rhine. They expect
him to be lrome soon.
There has not been a single case
of Influenza known In Apiary. Wi
have been extra lucky and our school
has been in fine attendance all win
ter, which Is something we are all
thankful for.
YANKTON
M-s. Earl Portei' has been here
for several days on a visit to her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Tarbell.
The meeting dales of the Yankton
grange is on the first and third Sat
urdays of the month.
Our church is closed and those
people In the neighborhood who like
to attend church, will be glad when
church services are resumed.
The street from Houlton to St
Helens Is so slippery on a rainy day
that it is difficult for horses to keop
on their feet. The automobiles pass
by very swiftly and the horse driver
Is obliged to turn out quickly, which
oftentimes causes the horses to slip
and fall to the pavement.
Mr. Mnrkanen was unfortunate In
losing two fine hogs Just as tney
were almost ready to kill.
The farmers are making prepara
tions to do their spring planting.
It Is understood that several farm
ers In this vicinity have recently pur
chased fine blooded cattle, and they
are expected to soon arrive here.
