ST. HELENS MIST! FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1918 issued ETery Friday by THE MIST rrULISHINQ CttMPAJiT O. D. HEILBORN. . . .VU President and Manager. S. C. MORTON ..Editor SUBSCRIPTION- RATES One Year .f 1.80 Six Months .75 Entered as second-claw matter, January 10th, 1912, at the Postofflce at St. Helens, Oregon, under the act of March 3rd, 1879. OOCNTY OFFICIAL PAPER THE AMERICAN'S CREED I believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the peo ple; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a Republic; a sover eign Nation of many sovereign States - a perfect Union, one and in separable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality. Jus tice and humanity for which Ameri can patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I, therefore, believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its la .78, fo respect its flag and to defend it against all enemies. William Tyler Page. SHOULD BE DEPORTED Aliens who cancelled their first papers or renounced their citizenship in the United States in order to avoid military service under the draft law, should be deported. This country is no place for them; they belong .to the country from whence they came. They should be sect back to the land they prefer. This is a duty the gov ernment should not overlook. It is not fair to our boys who have been over there fighting for the freedom of the world. It would not be fair to them when they come back home, to have the aliens occupying positions they left vacant when answering the call of the country. The United States offers freedom for all, but those that have shirked a duty and refused to accept a part of the responsibilities, are not entitled to nor should they have a part of the rewards. And those aliens who neglected to take out their 'papers during the war, should be the subject of the closest examina tion when they apply .for citizenship in the after-war times. It appears to us that a list of these aliens could be obtained from the advisory boards and some of the members of the board in Columbia county can give valuable information as to the pa triotism (?) of some aliens, who hey assisted in filling out their question naires. Their true status should be property of the public. It will be a safeguard. BUILD A MEMORIAL The Mist is fully In accord with Mr. Ballagh's suggestion as to build ing a memorial arch in honor of those men from Columbia county who have given their lives in the world's great war. Already there are a dozen or more sleeping their last sleep, some of them on foreign soil and with the casualty list constantly increasing, there is little doubt thai we shall learn of otuers who havt made the supreme sacrifice. As to the location, model of arch or monument, that Bhould be left to a memorial committee and the Mist thinks such committee should be ap pointed from the several sections of the county. St. Helens, being the county seat, is the logical place for the memorial and the committee ap pointed should pick out the most ad vantageous spot in the city for the location of the monument. Let's build a memorial for our hero soldier boys. For Xmas What Makes a Nicer Pres ent Than a Photograph Your relative or friend will be glad to be remem bered by having your photo. Open from 8 a. m. to 9 p. m. SCOTT & LOVEJOY Proprietors Next Door to Columbia County Bv.uk , ; THE COMMERCIAL CLUB St. Helens might be a live town. It hai that reputation, but it could be livelier. Many good things have come to St. Helens, come unsolicited. Many other good things would have come if a live commercial organiza tion In a concentrated effort had worked for and encouraged indus tries to locate here. It is not too late to start, in fact, it is just the right time to start. Shipbuilding and lum bering will not be with us always. Other things must take their places. It will be years before these indus tries fail, but in the meantime, other industries can be located and set in motion which will be here to take the vacant place when the time comes. The organization of a commercial body is a step in the right direction. The club,- however, will not succeed without the individual and untiring efforts of each individual. If this et fort is given, things will be accom plished which will upbuild the coun ty and town and all will reap a bene fit. Here's hoping the club to be organized will occupy a place of use fulness in the city's affairs for years to come. That it's members will work together to accomplish the big things for the whole town and that selfishness will never enter into the management of the club's affairs.
