I 6 1 ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 29. 1918 1 1 CAPTURE OF SEDAN RECALLS BIG EVENT The fact that the American troops ct.ptured the town of Sed.-.n just few hours before the trrntstice was signed and was the last place cap tured by the Yankees In the great world wr.r has nerved to call atten tion to the renown which this place attained in the Franco-Prussian war of 1S70. It was the scene of the surrender of Napoleon III to the kins of 1'russlr.. The little town of Sedan which, like many other quiet places, has had irreatness thrust upon it. lies some 13 miles east south-east of Mezieres by rail, in the department of Ar dennes on the right bank of the Meuse. In the days before the war, many visitors found their way there to view the sceie of the greet battle of 18T0, and to drive out to the Bazeilles to see the collection of war relics there and the house rendered famous by Neuvllle's paintings, Les Dernierej Cartouches." But Sedan was very far from living on its fame. It was n busy little place, engaged in weaving its woolen fab rics, working its flour mills, making its iron goods and its chocolate, and generally conveying that air of thrifty but unhurried energy which seems to characterize so many such towns in northern France. Moreover, Sedan has no special desire to remember 1870, and would rightly insist that those who would take the trouble to look into the matter, might find many stirring events in its long history, events re dounding very much to its credit For was not Sedan, in the 16th cen tury, when all France was in arms against them, a veritable asylum for Protestant refugees, who Indeed laid the basis of its industrial prosperity ana made sedan the seat of a Prot estant seminary? It was in the 16th century, too, that Robert IV. Setg neur of Fleurange and Sedan, and also marshal of France, erected Se dan, on his own authority, into an independent principality. Where Robert succeeded, however, his suc cessor failed. Henry of Navarre was then king of France, and had no liking for such divisions of power and authority. " So he marched against Sedan and captured it iu three dys and it became merged into the royal lomain. In the latter part of August. 1870, Marshal McMahon set out from Cha lons with an army to effect the relief of Metz, where Bazalne had been locked up by the German forces after the battle of Gravelotte. The third and fourth German armies, by forced marches, succeeded in barring Mc Mahon's way to Metz r.nd pressed the French northward with the object of forcing them over the Belgian fron tier. Marshal McMahon, however, nfter several days' fighting, chose the alternative of throwing himself into the fortress of Sedan, but took the precaution of occupying the heights which surrounded the for tress on the east, north and west. The Germans, however, outnum bered the French two to one and proceeded to encircle them. The r.ctual battle of Sedan began early on the morning. of September 1. While the Wurtemberc troops were assigned to hold the line of French possible retreat to Mezieres, the Bavarian, Prussian and Saxou troops, with the guard, delivered the attack along the entire French line. Marshal McMahon was wounded early in the fighting, and to the con flict of authority betweon Ueierals Ducrot and Wimpffen was due not a little of the confusion which fol lowed. The most desperate fighting took place at the village of Baseilles, to the e?.st of Sedan. In the Lite af ternoon, the French had been driven from their positions, and the Ger mans had planted ou the heights around Sedan a circle of 500 cannon. Against the Are of these guns the French could offer only & futile re dstance. They were driven back on Sedan, and at 4 o'clock in the after noon the bombardment of the town began. The futility cf continuing the un equal fight was soon apparent to Napoleon III, who was p-esent. The great crtastrophe had arrived. The army of Chalons saw itself forced to lay down its arms. The town was on fire in several places. When the Ba varian Jaegers approached the Torcy gate of Sedan they saw a white flag hoisted there by the express order of the emperor himself. After one more short fight in Bnlan. further advance was arrested, and firing ceased. The King of Prussia thereupon sent an emissary to demand the sur renderof the fortress and the army. He was, however, at once led to Na poleon, of whose presence in Sedan the German headquarters had not till then been aware. The emperor received him, and then sent an au tograph letter to King William as follows: "Not having been able to die in the midst of my troops, there is nothing left roe but to surrender my sword into your majesty's hands. I am your majesty's faithful brother, Napoleon." The negotiations for the capitula tion began late in the evening at the village of Douchery, three miles to the west of Sedan, between BUmarck and Wimpffen. No decision was reached and at 1 o'clock at night Wimpffen returned to Sedan and called a council of war. Napoleon quitting Sedan early in the morning, requested a personal interview wilt Bismarck. This took place in a wretched little house on the road to Douchery, before the terms of the capitulation had been agreed upon. The French army was made pris oner of war, nearly 2,900 officers and 83,000 men laying down their arms. All war material was handed over immediately and the fortress was entered on the evening of Sep tember 2. The French lost In the battle 17,000 men, whilst 3,000 ?u ceeded in escaping into JJelglum. Evans by name, with the American .expeditionary forces in France, has written lot tor to his parents In San Bernardino, telling of meeting General Foch at close range In France. Evans had gone into an old church to have a look at it. As he stood with bared head, satetfylng .his respectful cur iosity, a gray men with the eagles of a general on the collar of his shabby uniform also entered the church. Evans paid small attention at find, but was curious to see hliu kueel in the church, praying. The minutet. passed until nearly an hcur had gone by before the gray man arose from his knees. Then Evans followed the gray man down the street and was sur prised to see soldiers salute him ii great excitment and women and children stopping lu their tracks with awe-struck faces rs he passed'. It wan Field Marshal Foch. Now Evans of San Barnardino counts the experience one of the greatest of his life. During the hour Geneal Foch wan on his Lnees In that silent church In humble supplication 10,000 gun were roaring at his word. Millions of armed men were croushlug l'i the trenches or rushing across blood- drenched earth at his command. Generals and field marshals, nrtlller) and cavalry, Infantry and engineers, tanks and airplanes fought as he com manded them to do and In no other manner, as he prayed in that 1'ttle church. Nor was It an unusual thing for General Foch to do. It Is said that there Is never a day that he does not do the same thing if there be t church that he can reach. He never falls to spend an hour cn his knees every morning and every night it is the same He has done this during his entire life.
