MORTON Editor 8CBSCRTPTIOX RATES One Year 91. BO Six Months 75 Entered as second-class matter, January 10th, 1811, at the Postotnce at St. Helens, Oregon, under the act ot March 3rd, 1879. COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER TIME EXTENDED The editor of the Mist has been so busy with Liberty Loan and olher matters, that statements to delin quent subscribers have not been sent out, as we intended to do. We are, therefore, going to extend the time of renewals at the old rate of (1.60 per year for a short time longer and until all of our subscribers can be notified as to their account. CAN' DO OCR HART There was war for Independence, There was war to free the slaves. And now we're In another war, With those "Huns" across the waves. We are sending our noble laddies. And we're 'knitting day and night;! We are saving food to send them So we'll swln In this great fight. As the battles rage o'er yonder. And our boys are falling fast; How they fight with vim and vigor For their country, till the last. Tho' we cannot all be with them On the battlefields of France, We can dig into our pockets And buy Thrift and Saving' stamps. By Lester Katherine Weed. Vernonia, Oregon. THE STARS AND STRIPES AT BERLIN State Premt Firm in Support of Win tlteWar Program THE UO AD TO HKItl.IX START TO WORK It has been almost three weeks since the schoolhouse fire and noth ing has yet been done towards re building the school or making plans for another school building. In the meantime, all temporary buildings have been secured and fitted up at a considerable expense. The Mist realizes the hard position in which the school directors were placed and It has no desire to criticize. At the same time, however. It might be sug gested that plans be formulated for the rebuilding of the old school or the erection of a new school.. Jump ing around from pillar to post and spending several thousand dollars on premises for only temporary use should be avoided if possible. The school directors, if unable to make up their minds as to what course to pursue, should call a mast; meeting of the taxpayers and ascertain their wishes.' Further delay is (inexcusable. We are on the road to Berlin, And we will not turn back Till we hang old Bill the Kaiser And his dirty Hunnlsli pack. We will spank both Frltx and Heinle good. And teach them to behave, And that In the twentieth century No man can be a slave. And when we have banged old Bill the Kaiser, And spanked the dirty crew; We will turn right back for home again. And come right back to you. By John Philip. to Inrreuse it in spite of the fact thut everywhere coxt charges are going skyward. If he Is not interested In his native country or the country in which he lives, he hasn't sufficient interest in the work of this govern ment to entitle him to work on gov ernment ships at $7.00 per day. Not only this, we do not believe he is a safe man to hive around a shipyard which is working on government con tracts, for he is a traitor to his own country and is lukewarm to the country in which he lives. There fore, he cannot be interested in the war program of this country. Before many months, it is possible that a more rigid rule will be made by the government as to who shall be per mitted to work in or on government works. Tuesday's news dispatches told how the American soldiers were fighting on. "After three days' struggle through the Germau's formidable de fense of masonry, steel, wire and pit falls, the first American army today was fighting on. There's the story of the American soldier, he is still fighting on to the LAST LINE OF DEFENSE. Comment Is unnecessary, but we who stay at home might well asl; our selves this question: "Are We Fight ing On" to back up the soldiers we have sent to defeud us? ' . The six o'clock and Sunday closing suggested by the State Conucil of Do lease is premature, to say the letyjt, and that organization, which has for j its purpose something more than the 'enforcement of the blue law, will gain little by the agitation started. The public sentiment will not be theirs In this move and the best thing Woodward or Kollock can do, Is to postpone Indefinitely the action sug gested. The Idea of conserving man power is a good one, but "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and it might also be taken into con sideration that the ruling suggested would deprive hundreds of honest citizens of their means of a livelihood. ly given their pages to the propaga tion ot a great cause.
