6 ST. HELENS MIST, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6. 1918 l HOUSEHOLD HINTS THE FIGHTING LINE 4 When Jimmy went to fieht the Hun Across tno Drlny sea Conrso salt dampened with vine-!1' seemed like setting of the sun J 1 1 .1. . . . . I rr T : M I Car will clean enameled ware that has become burned or discolored In mixing batter the lumps of flour cau be avoided by putting the salt In the flour before wetting. To keep coffee from boiling over plr.ce a lump of butter (size of large boan) Into the coffee pot Just before boiling starts. When your hands are badly soiled from scrubbing or housecleaulng take a handful of cornmoil and rub them with it and wash as usual. Enameled kettles that have burned dry should be fillod at once with boiling water, as cold water would cause the enamel to crack or chip. Glass stoppered bottles are some times very difficult to opeu. This may be overcome by putting a very thin coating of vaseline on the stop per. Add soda to the water in which greasy dishes are washed aid save eoap. The alkali in the soda, in combination with the grease will form its own soap. When cold starching collars and cuffs or men's shirts which you wish to give a high luster, add a piece of plum half the sire of a pea to the starch for each shirt I Good polish for furniture is made by mixing together vinegar and oil in equal quantities. Apply very sparingly with a sofe cloth and polish it oft with a clean, soft duster. A very delicate icing is made for cakes by mixing one cup of confec tioner's sugar with three table spoonfuls of cream; to this add the juice and rind of half an orange. When serge clothes get a "shiny' or glossy appearance, take a little vinegar to a pint of warm water and p;ess with a smooth cloth dipped In the mixture. This gives serge a new luster. When marking linen, put the cor ner into cold water starch, wring out and Iron until dry. It will make a perfectly dry surface, and the mark ing can be done without making any blots. To Jimmy's ma and me. And I opine we would repine, But we've no time, you soe. For now that Jimmy's gone to fight. To finish off the Hun. If he's to do his fighting right. And get 'cm on the run, We've got to hustle day and night A-backlng up of son. i We don't get up at reveille Or go to bed at "taps," Rut when the morning whistle blows There's no more time for naps We've got to hustle shot and shell And guns for all those chaps. Jim's ma is raising garden truck, One sister's making "sass," Another's in munitions, And our only other lass Will be a Red Cross nurse right soon. She's leading in her class. day I'm working fifteen hours a And yet I'm feeling fine. And when I do get tired I say, Well, that's a certain sign That I'm a soldier in my way And on the fighting line.
